Since being introduced to chess at the age of six, Tanitoluwa "Tani" Adewumi has had one goal. He wants to become the world's youngest-ever grandmaster—the highest title a chess player can achieve. The record is currently held by Russian chess player Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin, who won the title in 2002 at the age of 12 years and 7 months.
On May 1, 2021, the now 10-year-old Tani came one step closer to achieving his dream by becoming America's newest national chess master. The title, awarded by the US Chess Federation, requires players to get a rating of between 2200 to 2400. The boy, who practices for up to 11 hours every day after school, says the secret to his success is thinking of his plays ahead of time. Tani told NPR, "In a normal position, I can do up to 20 moves in advance."
The now fifth-grader fell in love with chess in 2017 after being taught the basics by a part-time teacher at his elementary school in Manhattan, New York. However, his mother couldn't make up her mind to allow him to join the school's chess club due to the travel and chess competition costs. The family of four were living in a homeless shelter and did not have extra funds to spare.
When his mother explained the family's situation to the chess club's instructor, Russell Makofsky, he immediately waived(免除) all costs for the young boy. Tani did not disappoint. Less than a year after joining the club, he had won seven awards. In 2019, the then eight-year-old, who was still living in a homeless shelter, made national headlines when he beat 73 competitors to win the New York State K-3 scholastic championship. His moving story went viral and a GoFundMe campaign(活动), set up by Makofsky, helped raise enough funds for Tani and his family to move into a new house.
4. What's the main factor in Tani's success in his own opinion
A. Practicing chess for a long time every day.
B. Learning from national chess masters.
C. Thinking twice before making a move.

7. Which words can best describe Tani

A group of wandering wild elephants, called "The Northbound Wild Elephant Eating and Walking Tour", have become an overnight Internet sensation(轰动) in China and globally. The pack first caught the attention of the locals in March 2020, after they suddenly left their home in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve.
While the original group was made up of 16 Asian elephants, two decided to return home after a week. The rest have continued their journey northward. Since leaving the reserve, the elephants have walked over 310 miles (500 kilometers). Along the way, they have searched farms for food and water, walked through urban streets, and even paid a visit to a car shop and a retirement home. Thanks to the government officials, no animals or people have been hurt. However, the elephants have destroyed more than $ 1 million worth of crops.
Researchers are not sure why the elephants decided to leave or where they are headed. While they are known to leave their habitats in search of food, this is the longest migration(迁徙) of wild elephants recorded in China. Because of the extreme distance traveled, some guess that the elephants may wander off. Elephant expert Chen Mingyong told Xinhua News Agency that the herd's leader possibly "lacks experience and has made the whole group get lost".
However, other scientists think the elephants were forced to move due to cutting down or burning the trees. Successful efforts have almost doubled the elephant population in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and the surrounding regions. However, their natural habitat has been reduced to make room for agricultural development.
The wandering herd's search for a suitable home has not gone overlooked by the millions of locals that eagerly follow their daily movements on social media. Adam Chang, assigned(分配) to deliver food to the elephants, said, "Before this meeting, I just felt curious about animals. Now, I think I would volunteer in animal rights groups to protect those giant creatures."

C. They wandered in local areas. D. They have increased in number.
9. What can we know about the elephants according to Chen Mingyong
A. They may have lost their way.
B. They aim to find new habitats.
C. They go on the yearly migration.
D. They are troubled by extreme weather.

The world's first-ever floating(浮动的) farm is expected to open soon. The farm is located in Rotterdam, a port city about 50 miles away from Amsterdam. Built near the mouth of the river Meuse, the farm consists of three levels.
About 40 cows will be moved to the second level of the farm in November. The level above them will house greenhouses that grow grass and crops needed to feed the cows. Meanwhile, the bottom level will hold any necessary machines and packaging for the milk and yogurt. By December, the farm is expected to be producing more than 200 gallons of milk per day.
In addition to producing fresh milk and yogurt, the farm produces and sells fresh food that runs through a closed cycle and ends up at the customer. This causes almost no waste, bringing the reduction of food's travel from production to consumers.
The farm is the idea of Minke van Wingerden, a partner in the development company behind the project, Beladon. In 2012, she and her husband got caught in Hurricane Sandy during a business trip to New York City. With the storm preventing food delivery trucks from getting on the road, local people were unable to find fresh produce in stores.
The event pushed Wingerden and her partners to find a way to produce food closer to people's locations in order to avoid losses of supplies in the future. They eventually came up with the idea of floating farms, which would make use of otherwise unused space in the water and meanwhile shorten the distance between stores and farms.
After launching the Rotterdam project, Beladon will work on opening more floating farms. The company is designing floating chicken farms and floating vertical(垂直的) farming greenhouses. The company is in talks with another Dutch city for a second farm.
Wingerden and her husband also believe that new communities should be built with food access in mind. The area by the Port of Rotterdam, for example, is on track to be filled with residential space and offices in the next several years, and Wingerden said food production should be at "the heart of that community".
12. What do we know about the floating farm from the text
A. It is a farm without any grass or plants.
B. It can produce more milk than expected.
C. It has three levels with different purposes.
D. It is planned to be used in certain climates.
13. What is the advantage of the floating farm
A. It offers custom-made foods.
B. It cuts the cost of shipping.
C. It plays a role in recycling wastes.
D. It acts as a shelter in a hurricane.
14. How did Minke van Wingerden get the idea of the floating farm
A. With the help of the scientists.
B. Through her personal experience.
C. By getting encouraged by the news.
D. By making research on the technology.
15. What can we infer about the floating farm from Wingerden's words
A. It makes it easier for people to get food.
B. It saves more residential and working space.
C. It helps people learn about food production.
D. It improves the attraction of new communities.

Katie had always felt like she never connected with anyone. There was no one she considered a friend. So, when her parents decided to move, she was okay with it. She didn't feel sad because she wasn't leaving anyone behind.
She was eight when they moved to a new town. It wasn't that different from where they had lived before. There were a lot of trees and kids turning around outside, riding bikes, and playing. One day her mother caught her staring out the window at some kids playing. Her mom told her to go out and play with those kids. So Katie went out. She could see that they were all having fun and she wanted to join in but she was afraid. She tried to gather up the courage to ask them if she could join them but she just couldn't do it.
She decided to go for a walk instead. She liked how peaceful the town was. The people seemed nice and polite. Her stroll(散步) finally led her to the town's lake. She felt the rush of cold air hitting her face. The beauty of the lake was something to behold(值得一看). She sat there admiring it and decided that this would be her place. She would come here every day and maybe one day, she would bring her friends here.
After school, she always stopped by the lake before going home. She swore she could stay there for hours, maybe even live there. If she ever got hungry, she always had food ready in her bag.
One day when she was writing a poem about the lake, she heard her stomach growl. She put down her notebook and her pen and got her sandwich out. She was about to take a bite when she heard a noise. This alarmed her. She hadn't heard or seen anything strange before. She looked around and suddenly she noticed that there was something black moving toward the bank.

分析句子可知,此处表述客观事实,应用一般现在时;Ngoring Lake与cover之间是动宾关系,应用被动语态am/is/are+done;主语为Ngoring Lake,be动词用is。故填is covered。
The sun was shining in a bright blue sky so I decided to visit Ngoring Lake.
故填a。
故填where。
9. 分析句子可知,此处为固定句型it takes/took/would take... some time to do sth,意为“花费多长时间做某事”,其中it为形式主语。故填it。
故填to survive。
37.【答案】 "A swimming black dog!" Katie cried out in surprise. First she felt a little frightened, because the dog was huge and wet. Then she tried to calm herself and guessed that "Maybe it is just hungry." So she offered her sandwich to the dog. After finishing its meal, the dog walked up to her and sat down beside her. She bravely reached out her hand to touch its head and introduced herself to it. The dog nodded as if to say "Nice to meet you, Katie." From then on, Katie and the dog became friends.
Every day, Katie brought five extra sandwiches for her friend. She told the dog everything that happened to her at school. Sometimes, she sang or danced and the dog just nodded along. For the first time, she didn't feel lonely. When her classmates knew there was a lovely dog swimming in the lake, they went with her to play with it after school every day. They spent time with her and the dog. All of them played games, sang, and danced. Having many friends gave her joy.
