For many people, barbecues(户外烧烤) are a chance to enjoy a meal with family and friends. For Stan Hays, however, barbecuing becomes his skill to feed people in need when the disaster happens.
The unique effort began in May, when a serious tornado(龙卷风) hit Joplin, about two hours from Hays' home. His wife asked him to help. So, he put out the word to his partners and headed down with his barbecue. "We thought we'd be there three to four days, serving maybe 5,000 meals," Hays said. But the need was there, so Hays and over 300 volunteers worked for 11 days to meet the need.
It was a life-changing experience for Hays, who had never organized any type of large voluntary effort before. While preparing to head home, he and his friends Will Cleaver and Jeff Stith came to the realization. "A barbecue community is able to respond to disasters like this quickly," Hays said. "So, before we left, we put together a plan to create the Operation BBQ Relief."
During the last eight years, the group has responded to almost 60 disasters across the United States, including Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the wildfires in northern California. More than 6,800 volunteers have joined the effort, and the group often partners with other organizations to serve the meals.
"Barbecues are comfort food," Hays said. "If you just lost your house or a loved one, getting a hot meal would remind you of the barbecues you had in the backyard and make you forget about the bad experiences in your life. That's worth it to me."

When you throw something in the recycling bin, do you think about what it could become And when you do, does it make you more likely to use that recycling bin Recently, a study was carried out in an effort to decide whether or not explaining to people what their recyclables are transformed(使改观) into would help increase recycling rates.
The researchers started with a group of 111 college students, asked to draw on paper before watching one of three ads. One was a public service message that showed paper going into recycling bins. The other two also showed the paper either being transformed into new paper or a guitar. After completing a survey, the students were asked to deal with the paper when they left. Half of those who saw the first ad recycled their paper, while the recycling rate jumped to 80% for those who'd seen the other ads.
After doing a few more lab experiments, the researchers headed into the real world. At a party, volunteers spoke with attendees(出席者) about recycling, with half mentioning transformed products and half keeping it general. They discovered the subject of the talks came into play. After the game, the recycling and waste bags were weighed. Those who received a message recycled over half of their waste, while those who did not recycled less than a fifth.
All this is to say that details matter. People want to know what treasures their waste can become, and when that's laid out clearly, they're more likely to do it. Perhaps recycling companies should redesign signs to describe the items(一件商品) being created. Recycling is far from a perfect solution, but it doesn't hurt to manage to improve its rates.
8. What contributes to the higher recycling rate
A. Telling people to throw litter into bins.
B. Reminding people of recycling's benefits.
C. Making recycling standards much clearer.
D. Describing the method of paper recycling.

Children may not be putting coins in piggy banks for much longer. With the move towards a cashless (不用现金的) society, pocket money is going digital.
To reflect "the change", many mobile budgeting (预算) apps for children have appeared worldwide, such as gohenry, Osper, and Gimi. These apps offer a simple money management service for children, often for a monthly fee paid by the parents. Parents can add money to children's accounts, set limits and check spending. Children can choose to save their money or spend it using a prepaid card.
These apps aim to teach young children financial concepts (金融概念), such as budgeting, interest rates and income. For example, the Swedish app Gimi—with 1.2 million users globally—has virtual savings jars where children can deposit money. Parents can pay children interest as they save. There is also a chores feature, where parents can pay children for completing housework. The account is attached to a prepaid card that is now available in Sweden only, but is expected to be launched elsewhere in Europe.
Philip Haglund, CEO of Gimi, believes the app can teach children responsible spending habits. "You don't become better at money management just because you have a degree in economics. It's more about the attitude and the relationship you have with parents' money when you're 6 to 12 years old," he says.
But Catherine Winter, Managing Director of Financial Capability at The London Institute of Banking and Finance, warns people that while digital tools can help there needs to be a more organized approach to financial education. The area should "have regular, designed classroom time and should be taught as an independent subject," she said. "Children would then have the right understanding to get the most out of both the apps and their money."
12. What does "the change" in paragraph 2 refer to
A. Putting coins in piggy banks.
B. Pocket money going digital.
C. Mobile budgeting apps springing up.
D. Paying for money management services.
13. What do we know about Gimi
A. It provides a prepaid card for free.
B. It pays children interest as they save.
C. It can be used only in Sweden now.
D. It can teach children concepts of money.
14. What do Catherine Winter's words mean
A. Digital tools can help a lot with finance.
B. Money management requires financial ability.
C. A regular classroom-based financial education is needed.
D. Children can get the most out of their money with the apps.
15. What's the text mainly about
A. The rise of the digital piggy bank.
B. The future of a cashless society.
C. The importance of financial education.
D. The popularity of money management.

I am lucky enough to live in a house that has a walled garden. In fact, this was one of the main features which encouraged us to buy this house. (1) Apple, plum, and cherry trees are growing well here. Since we moved in, we have been turning this area into a richer forest garden.
(2) Walled gardens can be created from the very beginning using recyclable materials. They can also be created in old industrial or agricultural spots, where the roofs of houses are no longer in good repair. In fact, our walled garden was made from an old cattle shelter.
I live in an area where temperatures can fall as low as around -5℃. (3) The stone walls help in temperature regulation(控制). Plants benefit from the protected microclimate in the garden all year round. I find I can successfully grow several plants that would not usually grow well outdoors.
Stone walls can provide a quieter space than other gardens centred by fences. We live in the countryside but are near a busy road. Enter this garden, however, and we might be in a different world protected from traffic noise and other outside distractions(使人分心的事). (4)
Finally, it is also worth considering that when a garden is centred by walls, it provides a range of choices for vertical(垂直的) growing. We often take for granted (对……不予重视)the very things that most deserve our thanks.
Growing up, I wanted to be just like my mom. Kind and caring, she always seemed to make people comfortable in her presence. For years she was a volunteer in our community. I loved going to the local nursing home to help her until I hit my teenage years. Suddenly, I was too caught up in my teenage world to worry about helping others.
One particular summer day when I was twelve, my mom came into my room and told me to get up and meet her at the car. I had planned to spend the day at the lake with friends. Why did she have to ruin everything Finally, I made my way outside. I imagined the lake water cooling my skin. Annoyed, I climbed into the car and shut the door. I sat in silence, too upset to make a conversation. "Tasha, would you like to know where we are going " Mom asked calmly.
"I guess..." I murmured under my breath.
"Sweetheart, we are going to a children's shelter. I have been there before and I think it would benefit you," she explained.
I felt a knot slowly form in my stomach. How was I supposed to help there
When we reached the shelter, I was rather surprised. It was a large white Victorian home. As we approached the large front hall, wind bells sounded peaceful while trees and flowers welcomed us. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.
My mom rang the doorbell. The door flew open and we were led to the front room, where all of the children were playing. Toys were spread out across the floor. I noticed a baby whose body was scarred(给……留下疤痕)with wounds. Most of the children had noticeable physical scars such as cuts. What a terrible life they had had before they moved here! My heart sank.

As I was looking around, I felt a gentle pull on my shirt. _____________________________________________________________

Paragraph 2:

Before I could look away from her face, she greeted me cheerfully, "Are you Tasha I'm Ashley." Embarrassed, I managed a nod. She happily grasped my hand and shook it warmly. Her serious look but sweet voice touched me. Our time together brought her great joy and fun and she also made my day.
I returned to the shelter with my mom several times. During those visits, some of the children including Ashley shared their troubled pasts with me. Moreover, I learned to be grateful for all that I had. It was the most unforgettable and valuable lesson I learned that summer.
