Unit 1 What's the matter
(Section A 1a-1c)
Grade level: 8th grade
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify and describe different health problems.
Students will be able to use the correct vocabulary and expressions to ask about and describe health problems.
Students will be able to give advice and make suggestions for different health problems.
Materials:
Pictures of different health problems
Whiteboard and markers
Handouts with vocabulary related to health problems
Worksheets with dialogue for discussing health problems
Warm-up:
Ask students to brainstorm different health problems they have experienced or heard about. Write their ideas on the board.
Presentation:
Introduce vocabulary related to health problems using pictures and descriptions of different conditions (e.g. headache, stomach ache, fever, etc.). Go through each item several times until students are comfortable with the pronunciation and meaning.
Model how to ask about and describe health problems using the correct vocabulary and expressions. For example, "What's the matter " "I have a headache." "My stomach hurts."
Discuss the importance of seeking help when experiencing health problems and the different ways to do so.
Practice:
Have students work in pairs to practice discussing different health problems using the dialogue provided on the worksheet.
Distribute handouts with vocabulary related to health problems and have students match them up with the correct pictures.
Have students role-play a conversation with one student describing a health problem and the other student giving advice.
Production:
Ask students to share their favorite advice for dealing with different health problems in front of the class.
Have a few students role-play a conversation about a health problem and advice in front of the class.
Assessment:
Observe students during the practice and production stages to assess their ability to use the correct vocabulary and expressions accurately.
Extension:
Have students research a common health problem in a different country and create a presentation or poster about it, including pictures and interesting facts.
Play a game where students take turns describing a health problem and the other students have to guess what it is.
Have students write a short paragraph about the importance of seeking help for health problems and the different ways to do so.
Watch a video or read an article about a new medical breakthrough and write a summary of what they learned.
Homework:
For homework, students can be assigned the following tasks:
Write a reflection on their own experiences seeking help for a health problem and what they learned from the experience.
Create a poster or brochure about common health problems and the different ways to seek help.
Watch a video or read an article about a famous medical practitioner and write a summary of what they learned.
Write a letter to a friend describing a recent health problem they had and the advice they received.
Research a common health problem in their own community and create a presentation or poster about it, including pictures and interesting facts.
