(Section A 1a-1c)
Grade level: 8th grade
Objectives:
Students will be able to identify and describe different environmental problems.
Students will be able to use the correct vocabulary and expressions to talk about environmental problems and solutions.
Students will be able to plan and organize a community service project related to environmental issues.
Materials:
Pictures of different environmental problems (e.g. pollution, littering, deforestation, etc.)
Whiteboard and markers
Handouts with vocabulary related to environmental problems
Worksheets with dialogue for discussing environmental problems and solutions
Poster paper and art supplies for creating posters
Warm-up:
Ask students to brainstorm different environmental problems they have observed or heard about. Write their ideas on the board.
Presentation:
Introduce vocabulary related to environmental problems using pictures and descriptions of different issues (e.g. pollution, littering, deforestation, etc.). Go through each item several times until students are comfortable with the pronunciation and meaning.
Model how to talk about environmental problems and solutions using the correct vocabulary and expressions. For example, "The air pollution is really bad in our city." "We need to reduce our use of plastic to help the environment."
Discuss the importance of taking action to address environmental problems and the different ways to do so.
Practice:
Have students work in pairs to practice discussing different environmental problems and solutions using the dialogue provided on the worksheet.
Distribute handouts with vocabulary related to environmental problems and have students match them up with the correct pictures.
Have students create posters about environmental problems and solutions using the art supplies provided.
Production:
Ask students to share their posters and explain the environmental problem and solution depicted.
Have a few students role-play a conversation about an environmental problem and a solution in front of the class.
Assessment:
Observe students during the practice and production stages to assess their ability to use the correct vocabulary and expressions accurately. Evaluate the posters based on creativity and accuracy.
Extension:
Have students research a specific environmental problem and create a presentation or report about it, including pictures and interesting facts.
Play a game where students take turns describing an environmental problem and the other students have to guess what it is.
Have students write a short paragraph about their personal connection to a specific environmental problem and what they can do to address it.
Organize a community service project related to environmental issues, such as a park clean-up day or a recycling drive.
Watch a video or read an article about a famous environmental activist and write a summary of what they learned.
Homework:
For homework, students can be assigned the following tasks:
Write a reflection on their personal actions and choices related to environmental issues and how they can make a difference.
Create a poster or brochure about different environmental problems and solutions, using the vocabulary and expressions learned in class.
Watch a video or read an article about a successful environmental project or initiative and write a summary of what they learned.
