Deadly flooding has swept China’s central Henan Province this summer in 2021. More than hundreds of thousands of people have been influenced. Up to August 2, a total of 302 people have been killed and 50 have been missing. It is terrible. Like many other natural disasters, floods can happen with little to no warning. Flash floods move quickly and have strong currents(水流). They are known to bring down trees and destroy buildings. Besides, floods can cause power cuts(停电), traffic jams and other problems. But, the flood itself isn’t the only problem to deal with. After a flood, its influence can be just as deadly, as it may not be possible to send basic supplies such as water and food to the area.
So, in the face of a flash flood, how should we save ourselves
●Avoid bridges that rapidly-moving water is crossing, as floodwater can cause bridges to break.
●Listen to emergency broadcasts(应急广播) for further instructions. If told to move to another place, do so.
●Stay inside the car if it’s caught in a fast-moving water. Only get out if the water begins to flood the car itself, and then move to the roof of the car.
●If caught within a flooded building, move to the highest floor. Only move to the roof if necessary. Once there, signal for help, such as drawing SOS on the roof.
●Stay away from power lines(电线), as they are often destroyed or knocked down during strong storms.
Besides, here are also some tips to keep in mind after a flood. Do not drink floodwater, or use it to wash food. Return to your home only after local governments have said it is safe to do so. Use only bottled or boiled water for drinking, cooking and bathing. Avoid driving through flooded areas.

Were you born on February 29th February 29th comes up on the calendar only every four years. A year with a February 29th might be good news if you are paid by the day or the week. But it might be bad news if you were born on a February 29th. You have to wait three years in between birthdays!
American English has an expression for the unusual situation. February 29th is called a leap day. And the year with a February 29th in it is called a leap year. The year before last, 2020, was such a year.
As a verb, the word “leap” means to jump, or to move quickly. “Leap” can also be a noun, meaning a jump, or a sudden move.
In a leap year, the dates jump over one day of the week. Let me explain. In 2017, the last day of the year, December 31st, fell on a Sunday. In 2018, it fell on a Monday. In 2019, it fell on a Tuesday. But in 2020, December 31st fell on a Thursday. It jumped right over Wednesday.
The reason for a leap day or a leap year is because our calendar does not follow the Earth’s orbit (轨道) around the sun exactly. Each year, we have a little time left over. So every four years, we put all that time together into an extra (额外的) day.
Some people choose to marry on February 29th because it is an unusual date. But some ancient peoples would likely tell couples not to do it. Leap years were believed to be difficult, and leap days were unlucky. To be honest, these have no scientific basis (依据).

These days, short videos have gotten millions of views (关注) online. Many people create and share short videos on popular video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. You can even add music and special effects to your videos. The videos can last 15 seconds to a few minutes long. They show people doing activities like cooking, exercising, singing and so on.
Teenagers especially enjoy these videos. More than 50 percent of students in Grade 7 and Grade 8 said they enjoyed watching these short videos. About 47 percent have uploaded their own videos, according to a recent survey.

If you live in the United States, the law says you can’t have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can’t earn(赚) your own money Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people’s yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting(织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology(技术) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it. However, when you make your own money, you don’t have to depend on someone else.
