is held every year on the day before Ash Wednesday, the festivities last for months, banning in November throughout January and early February. And if you love music, check out the annual Galactic concert at the world-famous Tipitina’s on Lundi Gras (the day before Mardi Gras).
La Tomatina (Valencia, Spain)
Launched way back in 1945, La Tomatina is one of the oldest festivals on our list. It's also easily the happiest but the messiest, coming off like the world's biggest food fight.
Legend has it that the whole thing started when some local boys joined a parade alongside musicians. The boys made the performers so angry that they tried hit the boys, and a vendor's (小摊贩)vegetable stand fell victim to the incident.
If you go, please follow some simple rules: Don't throw hard objects, squash the tomato before throwing it, stay a safe distance away from tomato trucks, and stop in time.
Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland)
Founded back in 1967, Montreux is one of the oldest music festivals in the world. It's also the second largest jazz festival, after the Montreal International Jazz Festival. Rapid deforestation (毁林) of the Amazon rainforest could influence the temperature and precipitation (降水,降水量) over the Tibetan plateau 15, 000 kilometers away.
Saini Yang at Beijing Normal University in China and her colleagues analyzed global climatological data from 1979 to 2019 to identify relations in temperature and precipitation between the Amazon rainforest and other areas. Such links are called “teleconnection1s”. They focused on the Amazon rainforest in particular because of its significance as a major carbon sink and as a climatic “tipping point” (爆发点) that could see forest turn to savannah (稀树草原) beyond a certain threshold (阈,界) of warming and human-driven deforestation.
The researchers found that since 1979, warm temperatures in the Amazon rainforest were related to warm temperatures over the Tibetan plateau and the West Antarctic ice sheet; more precipitation in the Amazon rainforest was associated with less precipitation in those regions. By analyzing changing temperatures in the regions between the Amazon rainforest and those distant areas, they were also able to trace the path through which energy or materials such as black carbon released in forest fires might spread through the atmosphere. Their analysis showed the route remained consistent under different future warming scenarios.
The collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet is a known tipping point. Melting snow on the Tibetan plateau is not, but the region is warming more rapidly than much of the rest of the globe, and changes to snow and ice there could have consequences for ecosystems and the billions of people that rely on its snowmelt for water, says Yang.
Victor Brovkin at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Germany says the teleconnections are an interesting find, but is skeptical that variability in the Amazon rainforest causes the changes elsewhere. He says the Amazon rainforest is too small an area to overcome the influence of the tropical oceans and the researchers don’t present a physical mechanism to explain any influence.
If the Amazon rainforest does have an influence on these regions, however, it could mean there is à higher risk that the Amazon rainforest tipping point might set others off, says Jonathan Donges-at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany. “It adds an additional potential domino (多米诺骨牌) that can fall. ”;
4. Why was the Amazon rainforest the focus for Saini Yang’s research
A.Because it played a role as a main carbon sink.
B.Because it was the most important carbon sink.
C.Because it was very likely to turn to savannah.
D.Because it was at a high risk of becoming a climatic “tipping point”.;
5. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.The benefits of the research.
B.The findings of the research.
C.The means of analyzing the data.
D.The results of the Amazon rainforest being deforested.;
6. Which of the following points may Saini Yang agree with
A.The temperature of the Tibetan plateau changes the fastest.
B.The variability in the Amazon rainforest may not lead to changes elsewhere.
C.The more the Amazon rainforest rains, the less rainfall the Tibetan plateau may have.
D.The consequences of the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet are little-known.;
7. What can we learn about the Amazon rainforest from the last two paragraphs
A.Teleconnections have kept the researchers interested for a long time.
B.The Amazon rainforest tipping point is likely to set off those of other areas.
C.The findings of the research on the Amazon rainforest are controversial.
D.The Amazon rainforest is large enough to remove the influence of the tropical oceans.

A team led by Dr. Edward Chang at the University of California carried out an experiment, in which they used brain waves of a paralyzed(瘫痪的) man who cannot speak to produce words from his thoughts onto a computer.
“Most of us take for granted how easily we communicate through speech,” Chang said. “It’s exciting to think we’re at the very beginning of a new chapter, a new field to reduce the difficulties of patients who lost that ability.” He admitted that such a communication method for paralysis victims would require years of additional research. But the new study marks an important step forward.
Using brain signals to work around disabilities is currently a hot field of study. In recent years, experiments with mind-controlled prosthetics(假肢) have permitted paralyzed individuals to shake hands with someone or take a drink using a robotic arm. The process involves people imagining movements and those brain signals are sent through a computer to the prosthetic.
Chang’s team built their experiment on earlier work. They developed a method called “speech neuroprosthetic”. The process uses brain waves that normally control the voice system.
The person who volunteered to test the device was a man. He suffered a brain-stem stroke 15 years ago, which caused widespread paralysis and left him unable to speak.
The researchers implanted electrodes on the surface of the man’s brain, over the area that controls speech. A computer observed the patterns when he attempted to say common words such as “water” or “good”. Over time, the computer became able to differentiate(区分) between 50 words that could form more than 1, 000 sentences.
Repeatedly given questions such as “How are you today ” or “Are you thirsty ”, the device enabled the man to answer “I am very good.” or “No, I am not thirsty.” The words were not voiced, but were turned into text on the computer.
It takes about three to four seconds for a word to appear after the man tries to say it. The researchers say their next steps will include seeking ways to improve the device’s speed, correctness and vocabulary size. They also plan to one day develop a computer-produced voice that could replace text on a computer.
8. What does Chang want to tell us in paragraph 2
A.The team’s experiment is of great value.
B.We should improve our ability of speaking.
C.Their communication method is fully developed now.
D.The method has solved most problems of the patients.
9. What’s the similarity between mind-controlled prosthetics and the method of Chang’s team
A.They both use brain signals. B.They both are very popular now.
C.They both change words into action. D.They both produce words on a screen.
10. How will Chang’s team improve their device in the future
A.By making it smaller.
B.By making it affordable.
C.By making it produce pictures on a computer.
D.By making it differentiate more words.
11. What is the best title for the text
A.Paralyzed Man Uses Mind-controlled Prosthetics to Finish Tasks
B.Paralyzed Man Communicates Normally with a Speech-aided Device
C.Device Uses Brain Waves of Paralyzed Man to Help Him Communicate
D.Repeated Questions Given to Paralyzed Man Make Device More Intelligent

The last race of the day was over. My breathing gradually stilled along with the ripples (波纹) in the pool, but I stayed in the water, watching sadly as the winners gathered for the medals ceremony.
“Don’t look so sad,” I heard a voice say behind me. I turned around to see a tall, blond, blue-eyed man standing on the edge of the pool. “You came in fourth, but you are the best in your country.” he said smiling,“I’m Ken Schafer, and you ”
“Rima Datta.”
“And how old are you, Rima ”
“Fourteen, Sir.”I replied lifting myself out of the water. Ken was a swimming coach from California and asked me about my life as a swimmer until then.
My eldest brother, Anil, had taught me how to swim, but I had no real training until I was nine when a coach from the National Institute of Sports came for just three months a year to train the boys at Mayo College, where our father taught. She set aside a couple of hours a week for the daughters of the staff. It was she who had corrected my mistakes and encouraged me to take part in competitions.
Surprised to hear how little steady training I had had, Ken introduced me to the National Institute of Sports in Patiala to be trained in this summer. The train was hard, and I felt quite lonely away from my parents and all that was familiar. But it was Ken,with his tireless enthusiasm, his passion for swimming, and his faith in me that kept me focused.
I won my first gold medal at the national championship that year, a fact that filled me with immense joy and Ken with a sense of satisfaction that his work with me was paying off. Yet he realized that what I really needed was a team to train with and steady coaching year-round.
Then he persuaded my parents to allow me to go to California and train there for a year. He even helped find out a host family for me.
