刺猬的体背和体侧满布棘刺,头、尾和腹面被毛;嘴尖而长,尾短;前后足均具5趾,蹠行,少数种类前足4趾;齿36~44枚,均具尖锐齿尖,适于食虫;受惊时,全身棘刺竖立,卷成如刺球状,头和4足均不可见。刺猬是属于哺乳动物中的猬形目。最普遍的刺猬种类是学名为“欧洲刺猬”的普通刺猬,广泛分布在欧洲、亚洲北部,在中国的北方和长江流域也分布很广,这种刺猬冬天冬眠,在苏南民间又被叫做“偷瓜獾”。
