刺猬的体背和体侧满布棘刺，头、尾和腹面被毛；嘴尖而长，尾短；前后足均具5趾，蹠行，少数种类前足4趾；齿36~44枚，均具尖锐齿尖，适于食虫；受惊时，全身棘刺竖立，卷成如刺球状，头和4足均不可见。刺猬是属于哺乳动物中的猬形目。最普遍的刺猬种类是学名为“欧洲刺猬”的普通刺猬，广泛分布在欧洲、亚洲北部，在中国的北方和长江流域也分布很广，这种刺猬冬天冬眠，在苏南民间又被叫做“偷瓜獾”。
