pay attention 意为“注意;集中注意力”,常与介词to连用,后接名词、代词或动词-ing形式作宾语。

【知识点2】set off的用法
知识点再现
Before we set off, there are a few rules and suggestions for you. 在我们出发之前,要先给你们讲几条规则和建议。(P26)
set off意为“动身;出发”,相当于set out或start off。后面跟介词for短语, 也可接不定式, 表示 “动身去某地” 。也可表示 “打算、准备 (做某事)” , 后面常接不定式。
【拓展】“动词+off”的常见短语:

whenever引导让步状语从句,表示“每当,无论何时”,相当于no matter when/ every time.
用法实例
The roof leaks whenever it rains. 这屋顶每逢下雨就漏。
Whenever you come, you’re welcome. = No matter when you come, you’re welcome. = Every time you come, you’re welcome.无论你什么时候来都受欢迎。

be careful of意为“小心;当心”,of是介词,后常接名词(短语)或代词。与be careful with/about同义。
用法实例

be careful 意为“当心”,可单独使用,目的是引起他人的注意,相当于look out或watch out。

【知识点7】情态动词must, might的用法
知识点再现
Now, you mustn’t walk too close to the edge of the hill path because you might fall and hurt yourselves.现在,你们不能走得离山路的边缘太近,因为你们可能会掉下去和伤到自己。(P26)
(1)must为情态动词,意为“必须”。其否定式为mustn’t,意为“不许;禁止”,语气很强烈。must的肯定式还可表猜测,意为“一定;肯定”。
(2)might为情态动词,意为“也许”。在此不是may的过去式,而是用于表猜测。通常用于表示一种没有把握的推测,此时与may无时态的区别,只有语气区别,might所表示的可能性比may小。

在连贯地说话或朗读时,在同一个意群中,如果相邻的两个词前者以辅音音素结尾,后者以元音音素开头,就要自然地将辅音和元音相拼,构成一个音节,这就是连读。
连读时的音节一般不重读,只需顺其自然地一带而过,如:not at all这个短语,连读时听起来就像是一个单词。
注意:连读只发生在句子的同一个意群中,在两个意群之间即使有两个相邻的辅音和元音出现,也不可连读。

英语连读的一些规则:
1. “辅音+元音”型(即相邻两词中的前一个词是以辅音结尾,后一个词以元音开头)
e.g. Put it on, please.
2. “辅音+半元音”型(即前一个词以辅音结尾,后一个词以半元音即/j/, /w/开头)
e.g. Thank you.

3. “元音+元音”型(即前一个词以元音结尾,后一个词以元音开头,这两个词往往要自然而不间断地连读)
注意:若前一个词的结尾和后一个词的开头相同,这两个词要连读。
