Michael J. Fox became famous all over the world after starring as Marty McFly in Back to the Future in 1985. Six years later, aged 29, he developed Parkinson's disease. Since then, Fox-who is now 60 years old-has helped raise over $1.5 billion to help find a cure for the progressive nervous system disorder.
As a non-profit organization that provides money for Parkinson's research, The Michael J. Fox Foundation focuses on speeding up a cure for Parkinson's disease and improving treatments for those living with the condition—which influences about six million people worldwide. The Michael J. Fox Foundation tries to achieve its goals through a research program coupled with active worldwide efforts of scientists, Parkinson's patients, business leaders, persons taking part in clinical trials (临床试验), and volunteers. Having raised over $1.5 billion in research so far, the non-profit has basically changed the path of progress towards a cure.
The Canadian actor said that these treatments have already helped huge numbers of people, including himself. He said, "I enjoy life more. I'm more comfortable in my skin than I was 20 years ago. I can sit down and not be nervous. I couldn't do that 25 years ago."
Recently Fox told of his hope that biomarkers (生物标志) will be the next big stop towards treating and perhaps even stopping the disease. "If we can find ways to discover the condition before it's obvious, if we could take a thin piece of hair and find it, then we could treat it preventively and then maybe you won't get it," he explained.
One thing Fox is sure of: He won't stop fighting until there's a cure.

Harriet and Chris Martin,75 and 76 from Bournville, Birmingham have reduced their carbon footprint by making changes in their home and their habits. Harriet is a retired teacher; Chris used to work in manufacturing and at a local university.
"I feel guilty about what people of my generation have done. I don't want to leave behind a damaged world for my four grandchildren," says Harriet. The couple learned all about energy efficiency when they were involved with retrofitting (翻新) a local building. Then, in 2009, they downsized their family home to the one with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of just E.
"We chose a house where we could make as big an improvement as possible," explains Chris. "Fortunately, we were able to work on the house for six months before moving in." They fixed solar thermal panels (太阳能加热板) on the roof, which provide nearly all their hot water from April to September and pre-warm their water for the rest of the year. They also put ten solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in the garden which produce as much electricity as they use. "After all our improvements, I calculate that our home's carbon emissions have been reduced by about 85 percent," says Chris.
While they're understandably proud of what they've achieved, Harriet makes the point that carbon dioxide emissions from heating and electricity make up only a small part of the average UK carbon footprint. Food, all the things we buy, and our travel choices are equally important causes. Raising animals to eat requires large amounts of land, food and energy. The Martins are already vegetarians (素食者) and changing over to a vegan diet.
They also cut down on what they buy new. They mend their clothes, and try to get things from charity shops, online sites or borrow from a neighbour. They rarely use their car and walk or take the bus instead. They avoid flying and have travelled by train to places."Educating ourselves and changing our lifestyle have been an enjoyable challenge,"reflects Harriet. "The main point," adds Chris, "is that we don't want to be personally responsible for depleting the world of resources."
8. What inspired the couple to save energy
A. The government s requirement.
B. The extreme climate change.
C. The improvement of a building.
D. The wrong behavior of their generation.
9. What could be said about the solar thermal panels
A. They generate electricity.
B. They heat water all year round.
C. They are fixed against the wall.
D. They provide nearly half a year s hot water.
10. What do the couple want to express in paragraph 4
A. Man should lower the quality of life to save energy.
B. We should have a goal to reduce our carbon footprint.
C. Man can't reduce carbon dioxide emissions too much.
D. We should make full use of natural resources in our life.
11. What does the underlined word "depleting" in the last paragraph mean
A. Replacing. B. Developing. C. Sharing. D. Exhausting.

A group of farmers in Nigeria are using a new method to grow crops from moisture (水汽) in the air. The method, known as aeroponics, does not use soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air and take in nutrients from water mist. The method could make a big difference in places where huge amounts of land have been made unfarmable.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria's smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. Ogbole says they are working hard to end seasonal food shortage in Nigeria. "It is just farming anytime during the year, meaning we can plant crops anytime during the year, and that we can harvest anytime during the year."
But setting up the aeroponics farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000.And some people in Abeokuta were very much against this nontraditional method of farming. It took a lot of effort to change people's minds about it. In fact, in Nigeria, about 30 million hectares of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security. In the north, only 49 percent of the land is fertile, a situation that worries traditional farmers. Aeroponics, however, does not require traditional farm work or much land. Nutrients for the plants are controlled by a recycling system, greatly increasing productivity.
Dr. Phillip Ojo, Director-General of the National Agricultural Seeds Council, says the government welcomes the new farming method. Ojo notes that with aeroponics, farmers can quickly increase planting materials.
The agricultural industry represents about 40 percent of Nigeria's economy. The government wants to greatly expand this percentage. For now, most farmers lack the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They also need access to high-quality seeds to guarantee (保证) better harvests. Technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
12. What do we know about the aeroponics
A. It helps crops draw nutrients from the soil.
B. It is the process of growing plants in water.
C. It is not affected by the seasons.
D. It is aimed at bringing back farmland.
13. What does "a situation" in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The overuse of the farmland.
B. The poor condition of the soil.
C. The traditional method of farming.
D. The high cost of the aeroponics farm.
14. What is Dr. Phillip Ojo s attitude to the aeroponics
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Unbearable.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Nigeria s agricultural industry.
B. A new planting mode in Nigeria.
C. The popularity of the aeroponics farm.
D. The need of skilled farmers in Nigeria.

Gold and brown leaves crunched (嘎吱作响) under Mary's boots as she made her way down the sidewalk. She could not wait to be home. The chill (寒意) from the autumn winds was bad, but it was not nearly as hard to bear as the chill she felt in her heart.
She could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Each person in the group would speak for five minutes in front of the class. Today was Mary's turn. Her legs had trembled all the way to the front of the classroom. Her hands shook so badly that she could not read her notes. As Mary spoke, her voice had become softer, almost to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Mary's part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Mary to stay after class for a moment.
"Mary, I know you're shy, but you worked hard on this project. I'd hate to see you give up on yourself," Mr. Roberts suggested, "If I give you another chance tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage "
Mary nodded. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
Arriving home, she found Mom baking in the kitchen. When Mom baked, Mary always watched and chatted with her. Mom always said it was Mary's company that made her baked goods taste so sweet.
Mom studied Mary's face as she came into the kitchen. "What's wrong, Mary " She asked.
Tears shone in Mary's brown eyes. She told the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake.
"Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can't talk to your class " Mom asked, sliding the round cake pans into the oven. She set the timer and then said, "Let me show you something."
