After months of staring in disbelief at the news about the refugee crisis (难民危机) last year, a few friends and I decided to use our interests and skills to take action. We organized a cycle trip from London to Athens to raise money for a refugee community centre in Athens. It went really well. We had 43 cyclists to take part in the activity and we managed to raise£48, 000, which is enough to pay for the rent and electricity for an entire year. This spring, we're planning on doing it all again with the aim of raising the same amount of money, to continue to provide them with their rent money so as to keep such an amazing project running on.
Every part of this project, the cycling and charity, is a positive response to the refugee crisis. The cycling is an amazing and challenging experience, and makes fund-raising a positive, energetic activity rather than an ordinary trip. And all over Greece, the cooperatives (合作企业), who are running the community centre, provide not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and dental care, but also social needs including education and childcare. Besides, they also provide a safe space to build relationships and relax, creating perhaps the first enjoyable and happy space that refugees have been provided with, and that refugees have been able to co-create on their journey.
Yes, the situation is still disheartening and it is still mostly unsolved, but that's not where we should leave things. In a world of sad news from the media, I feel it is really important to remind ourselves that there are positive responses from us, and that the skills we use to respond can be varied and creative. I wouldn't have paired cycling and the refugee crisis together before having had this idea! Whatever your interests and skills are, put them to good use, make them work for this crisis and create positive change!
4. What can we know about the author's cycle trip last year
A. It started from Athens. B. It lasted an entire year.
C. It was supported by a community. D. It lived up to expectations.
5. Which can best describe the cooperatives

A. Promising. B. Different. C. Astonishing. D. Depressing.
7. What does the author call on us to do
A. Develop our interests in our daily life.
B. Take part in the cycling activity.
C. Do something for the refugee crisis.
D. Make positive personal change.

Singapore's tradition of eating out in places called hawker centres is now recognized by the United Nations for its cultural importance.
A hawker is a person who sells food or goods and advertises by shouting at people walking by on the street. Hawkers are an important part of Singaporean culture. Open-air eating areas where hawkers sell their goods are very popular. Famous chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay have praised them.
On Wednesday, a specialized agency of the United Nations, UNESCO, added the city's "hawker culture" to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Singapore sought to have hawker culture added to the list about two years ago. Now that it has been recognized, Singaporemust provide a report every six years for UNESCO. The report must show efforts the city-state has made to save and support its hawker culture. "These centres serve as 'community dining rooms', where people from diverse backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner," UNESCO said.
In the 1970s, Singapore cleaned up its streets so the city moved street hawkers to new eating centres. These areas were part of an effort to improve the island. Now, the centres offer many different low-cost meals to local people and provide a pleasing social setting. The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians showed its stars enjoying meals at a famous night market. Some sellers even received Michelin stars from a famous restaurant rating system for their meals costing only a few dollars.
But, now the average age of the hawker in Singapore is 60 years old. Younger Singaporeans now want to work in offices. They are less interested in working in small restaurants. The COVID-19 Pandemic (流行病) health crisis also hurt sales, preventing foreign visitors and locals from eating out.
8. What do we know about hawkers from paragraph 2
A. They are native Singaporeans.
B. They sell goods in the open air.
C. They like posting advertisements on the street.
D. They have good relationships with famous chefs.
9. Why is the film Crazy Rich Asians mentioned
A. To advertise the film.
B. To introduce the stars.
C. To show the popularity of hawker centres.
D. To explain a famous restaurant rating system.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The difficulties faced by hawker culture.
B. The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
C. The future of hawker culture.
D. The average age of hawkers.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Hawkers support cultural diversity in Singapore.
B. Singapore makes efforts to promote its hawker culture.
C. UNESCO recognizes Singapore's low-cost food culture.
D. Singapore is preparing for the protection of traditional culture.

Trees in the cities are being robbed of sleep by street lights, according to a famous German scientist. Peter Wohlleben, author of The Hidden Life of Trees said that, like humans, "they also have to sleep at night". He compares trees in urban areas to orphans (孤儿) who have to grow without their network support, saying that light pollution makes city life even harder.
Mr. Wohlleben has studied trees and believes they raise their children, sweat, feel pain and communicate with each other. "Trees that live near street lights will die earlier because it's like a light burning in your bedroom," he said. "If you have any influence on street lights, you'd better turn them off at 1 o'clock or so." He developed the term "wood wide web" explaining how trees communicate and support one another. Mr. Wohlleben said roots had a hard time under pavements that were warmer at night when forests cooled down.
Researchers found artificial light changed the annual rhythm of blossoming and might have great effects on their health, survival and reproduction. Plants have grown well under 24-hour cycles of light and darkness, but the spread of artificial light disturbs these cycles. Light gives plants information about what time of day it is or whether they should be photosynthesizing (进行光合作用). If it's light all the time, they do not know when to carry out such activities.
In some cases the light is so bright that it affects their growth. Mr. Wohlleben also said that trees shed (落) their leaves in the autumn because snow falling on the leaves would cause the branches to break, causing them physical pain. The well-known author looks after the forest representing the community in Hümmel, Germany, where machinery is banned and the trees are left alone.
12. Why does Mr. Wohlleben compare trees in urban areas to orphans
A. They grow more slowly than trees in rural areas.
B. They suffer from environmental pollution.
C. They aren't supported by other trees.
D. They can't sleep day and night.
13. What should people do to protect the urban trees
A. Turn off street lights at midnight.
B. Leave lights on in their bedrooms.
C. Cut off the roots under pavements.
D. Learn the communication style of trees.
14. How does the light harm trees
A. It breaks the cycle of trees.
B. It slows down the photosynthesis.
C. It shortens the blossoming time of trees.
D. It prevents trees from communicating.
15. What does Mr. Wohlleben do in the forest of Hümmel
A. He keeps the leaves from falling.
B. He cures the trees of physical pain.
C. He makes the branches break easily.
D. He stops people using machines there.

On New Year's Eve, seventy-three-year-old George selected his food carefully. Skim milk was $2.99, white bread, 89 cents with a 10-cent discount. Leaving the cashier, he thought that he had saved 80 cents today.
At the exit, the wind made him think of his gloves. "Where are they " Not in the coat pockets. Not in the grocery bag either. He was sure he was wearing them when he entered the store. He clearly remembered putting them into the pocket of his coat. George made a second search of all his pockets, again including the grocery bag. Now he was sure they must have been dropped somewhere inside the store.
Old George had bought the black leather gloves at a 25% discount, for just $35.00, ten years ago. They were soft and warm and very durable (耐用的). He had taken care not to let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked as if they had been new. Losing this favorite possession was almost like losing a child to him.
George, calm on the outside but nervous inside, re-entered the store. He followed the same route he had walked before, starting from the bread counter, to the milk section, the corner where salt and sugar were placed, then the rest of the store. Several minutes of anxious searching turned out to be nothing. He asked the customers whether they saw a pair of black leather gloves, but they said no. Then he went over to the cashier without hesitation to ask if she had received any lost gloves, but only received the same answer. His heart grew heavier.
"Society has changed and people have changed," he said to himself. "Years ago, if somebody picked up something lost, they would give it back. Now a good action is lost."
Yet he did not give up hope. He started to stare at anybody wearing black gloves to see if they looked like his. The first two persons he saw did wear gloves, but one was women's and the other not black.

37.【答案】 Suddenly, he found a man looking like a lawyer, wearing black leather gloves. Abrupt as it might seem, George came up without hesitation and asked if they were his, but there came a disappointing answer. On second thought, he realized nobody would be so foolish as to wear them right inside the store. He had no other alternative but to ask the cashier to keep them in case the lost gloves were found. Then he dragged his legs towards the exit.
During the whole holiday, he was always thinking whether to buy a new pair. After all, in deep winter, he could not do without gloves. Finally poor George decided to buy another pair of leather gloves. With the last ray of hope, he stepped into the store again. No sooner had he opened the door than the cashier told him there was indeed one such pair as he lost. After examining them carefully, he was wild with joy, expressing sincere gratitude and saying to himself that a good action was never lost.
