School had just started in August when Conner began throwing up for no reason. It wasn't long before the boy also began suffering terrible headaches. In February a 1.7-inch tumor was found in his brain and Conner was set to begin to receive radiation (放射疗法) treatments. Before treatments start, technicians make a white plastic mask (面罩) to keep patients immovable and protect unaffected parts of the brain while radiation is directed at the tumor.
It's an unpleasant experience and a frightening time. The doctor Cook decided that the masks could at least be made to look like something fun—maybe Batman or Mickey Mouse. "I started thinking these masks are white and not fun at all for kids," she told The Greenville News. "I felt like if we could make them a little more fun for them, they might be a little more excited about coming in for the treatment. Because the kids are afraid. While the treatment itself isn't physically painful, it can cause a lot of anxiety. And the treatment is required daily for up to six weeks."
And the masks really make a difference. "The kids really like them," Cook said. "It makes what is, let's face it, a terrible experience, a nice experience because they get to choose something themselves."
When new children come in for the treatment, Cook finds out what their favorite movies or cartoon characters are. Then she sets about creating the mask by drawing the image she wants onto paper, sticking it with glue, and once it's dry, she applies the colors using paints. Each child can take the mask home once the treatment ends.
"Coming to the doctor always means fear and pain. I wanted to make it fun," she said. "The kids really love it. It's something they enjoy and can relate to. And it fills an interest I have. I get great pleasure from it."

A group of wandering wild elephants, called "The Northbound Wild Elephant Eating and Walking Tour", have become an overnight Internet sensation (轰动) in China and globally. The pack first caught the attention of the locals in March 2020, after they suddenly left their home in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve.
While the original group was made up of 16 Asian elephants, two decided to return home after a week. The rest have continued their journey northward. Since leaving the reserve, the elephants have walked over 310 miles (500 kilometers). Along the way, they have searched farms for food and water, walked through urban streets, and even paid a visit to a car shop and a retirement home. Thanks to the government officials, no animals or people have been hurt. However, the elephants have destroyed more than $ 1 million worth of crops.
Researchers are not sure why the elephants decided to leave or where they are headed. While they are known to leave their habitats in search of food, this is the longest migration (迁徙) of wild elephants recorded in China. Because of the extreme distance traveled, some guess that the elephants may wander off. Elephant expert Chen Mingyong told Xinhua News Agency that the herd's leader possibly "lacks experience and has made the whole group get lost".
However, other scientists think the elephants were forced to move due to cutting down or burning the trees. Successful efforts have almost doubled the elephant population in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and the surrounding regions. However, their natural habitat has been reduced to make room for agricultural development.
The wandering herd's search for a suitable home has not gone overlooked by the millions of locals that eagerly follow their daily movements on social media. Adam Chang, assigned (分配) to deliver food to the elephants, said, "Before this meeting, I just felt curious about animals. Now, I think I would volunteer in animal rights groups to protect those giant creatures."
8. Why did this group of elephants draw the locals' attention
A. They left the reserve. B. They ruined crops.
C. They wandered in local areas. D. They have increased in number.
9. What can we know about the elephants according to Chen Mingyong
A. They may have lost their way.
B. They aim to find new habitats.
C. They go on the yearly migration.
D. They are troubled by extreme weather.
10. What does the underlined word "overlooked" in the last paragraph mean
A. Shocked. B. Confused. C. Unnoticed. D. Separated.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. China's Wild Elephants Are Seasonally Migrating
B. Officials Are Trying to Guide Wild Elephants Home
C. China's Wandering Wild Elephants Attract the World
D. Increasing Human Activities Ruin Wild Elephants' Home

When you throw something in the recycling bin, do you think about what it could become And when you do, does it make you more likely to use that recycling bin Recently, a study was conducted in an effort to decide whether or not explaining to people what their recyclables are transformed(使改观) into would help increase recycling rates.
The researchers started with a group of 111 college students, asked to draw on paper before watching one of three ads. One was a public service message that showed paper going into recycling bins. The other two also showed the paper either being transformed into new paper or a guitar. After completing a survey, the students were asked to deal with the paper when they left. Half of those who saw the first ad recycled their paper, while the recycling rate jumped to 80% for those who'd seen the other ads.
After doing a few more lab experiments, the researchers headed into the real world. At a party, volunteers spoke with attendees(出席者) about recycling, with half mentioning transformed products and half keeping it general. They discovered the subject of the talks came into play. After the game, the recycling and trash bags were weighed. Those who received a message recycled over half of their waste, while those who did not recycled less than a fifth.
All this is to say that details matter. People want to know what treasures their trash can become, and when that's laid out clearly, they're more likely to do it. Perhaps recycling companies should redesign signs to describe the items(一件商品) being created. Recycling is far from a perfect solution, but it doesn't hurt to manage to improve its rates.
12. What contributes to the higher recycling rate
A. Telling people to throw litter into bins.
B. Reminding people of recycling's benefits.
C. Making recycling standards much clearer.
D. Describing the method of paper recycling.
13. What does the underlined part "came into play" in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Took off. B. Broke down. C. Sprung to mind. D. Had an effect.
14. What does the author advise recycling companies to do
A. Find perfect ways of recycling. B. Examine the details of items.
C. Show the sources of products. D. Sign the names on the items.
15. Where is the text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)
I am lucky enough to live in a house that has a walled garden. In fact, this was one of the main features which encouraged us to buy this house. (1) Apple, plum, and cherry trees are growing well here. Since we moved in, we have been turning this area into a richer forest garden.
(2) Walled gardens can be created from the very beginning using recyclable materials. They can also be created in old industrial or agricultural sites, where the roofs of structures are no longer in good repair. In fact, our walled garden was made from an old cattle shelter.
I live in an area where temperatures can fall as low as around -5℃. (3) The stone walls help in temperature regulation(控制). Plants benefit from the protected microclimate in the garden all year round. I find I can successfully grow several plants that would not usually grow well outdoors.
Stone walls can provide a quieter space than other gardens surrounded by fences. We live in the countryside but are near a busy road. Enter this garden, however, and we might be in a different world protected from traffic noise and other outside distractions(使人分心的事). (4)
Finally, it is also worthwhile considering that when a garden is surrounded by walls, it provides a range of choices for vertical(垂直的) growing. It was the middle of the day with the bright sun, blue sky, green grass, and a soft breeze (微风). It was a great day to play outside and the best day of my life because I got a new ball and a new bike as my sixth birthday presents, and I was visiting my cousin, Kristy, at her house.
"Here I go!" shouted David while kicking my new ball. David lived next door and was older than me. I thought he was a wild child, but he was actually very kind. The ball went flying as if it were going to space. "That was high!" Kristy said in surprise and we went after the ball. We all had a great time.
Later we had supper and the food my aunt made was good. While Kristy was helping do the dishes, David and I ran outside to play. We started taking turns riding my bike. David suggested that we ride it to the forest. And I agreed. David and I got on the bike and David started riding fast.
As we rode through the forest, I felt the wind brushing my face. It felt so great and free. Suddenly the bike hit a fallen branch and we went flying off the bike. Lying on the ground, I felt dizzy (眩晕的). I checked myself for injuries and saw some but they didn't upset me.
"David!" I shouted out anxiously.
"Hey," said a voice. I turned my head and it was David, who was standing behind me, holding my broken bike. At the sight of my disabled bike, I was so sad that I couldn't hold back my tears. It took David some time to calm me down.

37.【答案】 When we realized it was time to walk home, we found ourselves lost. It was getting darker and darker. I felt so scared that tears rolled down my face again. David tried to comfort me. He told me that he once made some marks on the trees in the forest, which might help us find the way home. Therefore, we made efforts to look for the marks but failed. Having walked anxiously for about an hour in the forest, we didn't find our way out.
It was completely dark when we saw fireworks being set off in the distance. We ran excitedly in that direction as fast as possible. Soon we found my aunt's house, in front of which my cousin Kristy was holding some fireworks and lighting them. Seeing us back safe, Kristy cheerfully hugged us. She told us that when noticing we had been away for long, she was concerned about our safety. She set off fireworks to draw our attention and guide us. It was an unforgettable experience. Without David's comfort and Kristy's fireworks, I would have been lost in the forest forever.
