Google gives$1 M grant to Press Association to develop robot journalistsNew consumers of the future could be reading stories pieced together by advanced data-analyzing robots rather than human journalists,if Google has its way.
On Thursday, the Press Association, the U.K.'s national news agency, announced that it received ?706,000 from the tech giant for its Reporters and Data an Robots (RADAR) (1) .
A collaboration between the Press Association and data-driven news start-up Urbs Media,RADAR aims to set up an artificial intelligence-fueled,news service that will generate tens of thousands of news stories a month using publicly (2) data.
Everyone from big-name news organizations to hyper-local outlets and bloggers could (3) from the program.Press Association editor-in-chief Peter Clifton claimed, "this is a hugely exciting development, and we believe our (4) with Urbs Media can be a genuine game-changer for media outlets across the U.K.and Ireland."
According to the Press Association,RADAR won't (5) mark the end of the flesh-and-blood journalists, but will rather enable the AI to produce a volume of stories that would be impossible to match manually.
The envisioned work-flow would begin with human journalists identifying open data sets and "creating detailed story templates across a(n) (6) of topics including crime, health and employment." The robotic reporter would then take over and scan the data, use language generation software to craft together story text and automatically locate relevant photos and video.Press Association clients would then be able to use a special distribution platform to identify news stories of (7) to their audience.
Content automation isn't a totally (8) concept in the news industry however.AP estimated that it can free up 20 per cent of journalists' time, allowing them to focus on more complex, qualitative tasks.
Shockingly, not all journalists are sold on the AI infiltration.A study found that journalists from leading news organizations had several reservations when shown an automatically (9) sports story. "I would never, ever, ever have written a story like that," one BBC journalist said, while a CNN reporter thought the story was repetitive and lacked variation.
Nevertheless,it looks like AI in journalism is here to stay.At a time when many media outlets are (10) commercial pressure,RADAR will provide the news ecosystem with a cost-effective way to provide insightful local stories.

For a while,my neighborhood was taken over by an army of joggers. They were there all the time:early mornings, noons and evenings. There were little old ladies in gray sweaters, young couples in Adidas shoes,middle-aged men with red faces. "Come on!" My friend Alex encouraged me to join him as he jogged by my house every evening. "You'll feel great."
Well,I had nothing against feeling great and if Alex could jog every day, anyone could. So I took up jogging seriously and gave it a good two months of my life, and not a day more.Based on my experience, jogging is the most overvalued form of exercise around, and judging from the number of the people who left our neighborhood jogging army,I'm not alone in my opinion.
First of all, jogging is very hard on the body.Your legs and feet take a real pounding running down a road for two or three miles.I developed foot, leg and back problems. Then I read about a nationally famous jogger who died of a heart attack while jogging, and I had something else to worry about.Jogging doesn't kill hundreds of people, but if you have any physical weaknesses, jogging will surely bring out,as they did with me.
Secondly,I got no enjoyment out of jogging.Putting one foot in front of the other for forty-five minutes isn't my idea of fun.Jogging is also a lonely pastime. Some joggers say, "I love being out there with just my thoughts." Well,my thoughts began to bore me,and most of them were on how much my legs hurt.
And how could I enjoy something that brought me pain? And that wasn't just the first week;it was practically every day for two months.I never got past the pain level, and pain isn't fun. What a cruel way to do it!So many other exercises, including walking, lead to almost the same results painlessly,so why jog?
I don't jog any more, and I don't think I ever will.I'm walking two miles three times a week at a fast pace, and that feels good.I bicycle to work when the weather is good.I'm getting exercise, and I'm enjoying it at the same time.I could never say the same for jogging, and I've found a lot of better ways to stay in shape.

7. Why did the writer give up jogging two months later? ______
A. He disliked doing exercise outside.
B. He was worried about being left alone.
C. He was afraid of having a heart attack.

8. From the author's experience,we can conclude that ______ .
A. not everyone enjoys jogging
B. he is the only person who hates jogging
C. nothing other than jogging can help people keep fit
D. jogging makes people feel greater than any other sport

Winter is a great time to experiment with new sports. The key is to find one that matches your interests and natural abilities. If you like to walk, keep walking-on snowshoes. If you want to try an endurance sport,go for cross-country skiing.Besides, snowboarding is just great fun.
Not satisfied with these?Try downhill skiing, then.Downhill skiing is not as hard as it used to be-shorter,lightweight,curved skis make any beginner feel like an Olympic winner. These newer skis-along with another type of equipment called ski boards, which are even shorter than skis-help you control your speed and body movements.
Consider testing the latest high-tech skis or snowboards?Check with your local sports shops or the rental places at the ski mountains about sample programmes.
You could also try sledding.Use a wood-framed sled with steel runners or a plastic sled to head down a snowy hill.If you prefer ice to snow, think hockey or figure skating.
Runners can also train during the winter in spite of wet or slippery roads. One of the easiest sports around, snowshoeing can be excellent cold-weather cross-training for runners and cyclists-or anyone wanting to take a wintry walk in the woods.Snowshoes are smaller, lighter, and better than ever.If you want to try them out,you may be able to rent a pair for a day at many of the larger outdoor or sporting goods stores.
Whatever sport you choose, don't rely on a friend for instruction. You wouldn't let an inexperienced doctor perform a brain operation on you,but why let one teach you to ski or skate? That's what instructors are for-to help newcomers start out right.Instructors can give you advice about equipment, techniques, safety, and dealing with injuries if they do happen to you.
Above all,if you want to progress, invest your time in learning the basic skills thoroughly.Everything else you do as a skier, boarder,or skater will be built on these first skills.

A. Six. B. Five. C. Four. D. Three.

A. Runners and cyclists cannot train because of the wet or slippery roads in winter.
B. Downhill skiing used to be more difficult to learn because of the old-fashioned skis.
C. People cann't rent snowshoes for a day at their local sports shops or the rental places.
D. In general, first skills are more important in skiing than in snowboarding or skating.
15. Who are the most likely readers of the passage? ______

I'd been asked to go to an editor's office with the old program "We have a story we think you'd be perfect for". Here was the topic: We want you to write about how middle-aged men have no friends. Seeing that, I couldn't help thinking, "Excuse me I have plenty of friends." Then the editor told me there were all sorts of evidence out there to show how men, as they age, let their close friendships go, and that the fact can cause all sorts of problems and have a terrible impact on their health.
As I walked back to my desk in the newsroom—a distance of maybe 100 yards—I quickly took stock of my friend list. First of all, there was my friend Mark. Wait, how often do we actually hang out Maybe four or five times a year And then there was another best friend from high school, Rory, and I actually could not remember the last time I'd seen him.
There were all those other good friends who seemed as if they're still in my life because we follow one another via social media, but as I ran down the list of those I considered real, true, lifelong friends, I realized that it had been years since I saw many of them, even decades for a few.
By the time I got back to my desk, I realized that I was indeed perfect for this story, not because I was unusual in any way, but because my story was very, very typical. And as I looked into what that means, I realized in the long term, I was heading down a path that was very, very dangerous. And I knew I needed a change.

A. Through the Internet. B. By letters.
