Sean Connery is widely accepted to have been one of the greatest James Bond actors of all time. But long before his acting days, Connery was a working class boy growing up in Scotland. He quit school to earn money for his family at the age of 13. After a series of odd jobs, he began bodybuilding and became a model for men's fashion catalogs. He competed in the 1953 Mr. Universe contest, which in turn led to work in stage productions.
Connery first realised the excitement of performing when he landed his first role in a theatre production of South Pacific in 1953. More stage and television work followed, including Requiem for a Heavy weight in 1957. In 1962 Connery played the role of James Bond, Agent 007 of the British Secret Intelligence Service, in Dr. No. The success of the film made him an international star.
Not wanting to be the fixed type as the super spy (密探), Connery continued to take other acting roles, especially in Marnie (1964). After completing the next two Bond films, Thunderball (1965) and You Only Live Twice (1967), Connery gave up the role of Bond. But four years later, he was persuaded to return to the role for Diamonds Are Forever (1971), which he declared (宣布) was his last movie as Bond.
He spent the 1970s playing mostly in period dramas and science-fiction films, including The Molly Maguires(1970), and Robin and Marian (1976). And years later he delighted Bond fans by returning to the role of 007 in Never Say Never Again (1983).
Two films in the mid-1980s rebuilt him as a major star. He won the Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in 1988. The 1990s brought such great films as The Hunt for Red October (1990) and The Rock (1996). Connery's latest movie was released (上映) in 2003.

A young Dutch inventor is widening his effort to clean up floating (浮动的) plastic from the Pacific Ocean. He has developed a floating device (设备) to trap plastic waste moving into rivers before it reaches the oceans.
Boyan Slat was just 18 years old when he invented a system for catching waste in the ocean. He also founded an environmental group called The Ocean Cleanup. Its purpose is to develop the system. In 2019, Slat showed the next step: a floating device called Interceptor. It removes plastic out of rivers. The device is powered by energy from the sun. "The 1,000 rivers are responsible for about 80% of plastic going into the world's oceans," said Slat. Three of the machines have already been used. Each machine costs about $775,600, but the cost might drop as production increases.
Since they were used, the machines have been doing very well, collecting the plastic bottles and all the rubbish in the rivers. According to Slat, it is necessary to close "the tap", which means preventing more plastic from reaching the oceans in the first place. He wanted to clean them all in the next five years. "This is not going to be easy, but if we do get this done, we could truly make our oceans clean again," said Slat.
The device is designed to be safe in rivers. Its nose is shaped to change directions to keep it away from larger floating things. It works by guiding plastic waste into an opening in the front of the device. The waste is then carried inside the machine where it is dropped into containers. The device sends a text message to local operators that can come and empty it when it is full.
8. What can we know about Interceptor
A. It is being under test. B. It can help sort waste.
C. It needs solar power to work. D. It is mainly used in the oceans.
9. What does "the tap" refer to in paragraph 3
A. The rivers. B. The machines. C. The oceans. D. The waste.
10. What's the function of the device's nose
A. To empty the waste. B. To serve as containers.
C. To ensure the device's safety. D. To send operators text messages.
11. Where is the text most likely from
A. A diary. B. A guidebook. C. A novel. D. A magazine.
D
Scientists say only enlarging the world's nature reserves(保护区) to help protect plants and animals may be useless. The main reason is that levels of human activity are rising in and around the nature reserves. In fact, recognizing spaces as protected areas is not diminishing human activity there.
The researchers found that a lack of money to pay for land conservation(保护) is affecting conservation efforts. And it is a lack of communication between people who live in protected natural areas and outsiders. About 17 percent of the world is within protected areas, including the national parks, nature reserves and wilderness areas. Protected areas are important for supporting environments with many different kinds of plants and animals.
The researchers again found increasing human activity in most protected areas in every country. However, they said that human activity appeared to be more of a problem in nations with fewer roads and lower life standards on the Human Development Index(指数) (HDI).
Across the Northern Australia, protected areas often proved effective in slowing human activity when compared with unprotected areas. But in South America, Southeast Asia and African countries, pressure from human activity inside protected areas was higher.
Experts say governments need to provide fund support to help protected areas. Simply recognizing a place as a protected area can't be the beginning and the end of a conservation effort. Working with local people to take efforts is also important. If they're not partners in the protected areas, then wildlife conservation is much more difficult.
12. What does the underlined word "diminishing" in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Reducing. B. Improving. C. Protecting. D. Balancing.
13. What do the researchers find about the nature reserves?
A. Protected areas have passed the unprotected areas.
B. Rising human activity in protected areas widely exists.
C. Protected areas are effective in developed countries.
D. Nations with lower HDI have more wilderness areas.
14. What do experts advise governments to do for protected areas?
A. Enlarge protected areas.
B. Partner other nations.
C. Offer money and work with the locals.
D. Help the locals move to protected areas.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. People May Cause Harm to Wildlife.
B. Nature Reserves Should Be Increased.
C. Locals Should Improve the Natural Environment.
D. Nature Reserves May Not Protect Wildlife Safely.

My husband, Donald, took our daughter Sarah out for some ice cream the night before driving her to college. As they were walking back to the car, they saw a young man sitting on the ground and giving his puppy a cone.
"A cute dog," Donald said as they walked by. "A free dog," the young man replied. Donald asked him what he meant by that and the man explained. He was moving away from Vermont and did not think the travel would be good for the dog. He had raised her from a small puppy.
The man said she was a 6-month-old cross between the Doberman and the Labrador named Rhubarb. Donald took his phone number. The rest, as they say, is history.
Rhubarb was a sweet dog and very friendly and loved everyone. Whenever someone came to the house, she was always happy. She also got along with Willie, an older Samoyed we had. Willie was not well and died about a year later, but, fortunately, Rhubarb's company helped him keep going for longer than that if he had been alone.
But the interesting thing about Rhubarb was that she never barked (吠叫). She would sometimes get excited when she saw a chipmunk and make a little crying sound.
One hot night when she was about 4 years old, we went to bed with the windows open and the doors unlocked. At about 3 a.m., I woke up to the sound of Rhubarb barking. I woke Donald and we got out of bed.
Rhubarb was coming toward us. We turned on the lights and noticed the door to the kitchen was open. Then we saw the door leading into the house from the garage was also open. We quickly locked all the doors, and we did not get any sleep that night. It was deep into the night, so we didn't call the police.
Paragraph 1:
The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash (烟灰) on the floor.

In fact, recognizing spaces as protected areas is not意为把地方划为保护区并不能减少那里的人类活动。 故选A。
The researchers again found increasing human activity in most protected areas in every country(研究者发现在每个国家的大部分保护区都发现了越来越多的人类活动。)

Any parents' wish is that their children will be safe and do well(任何父母的愿望都是他们的孩子安全、健康)和下文中的And while it might seem like all our parents do is to annoy and criticize us, we should listen to their words(虽然父母似乎只是在烦扰和批评我们,但我们应该听听他们的话)可知,此处是说尽管看起来父母做的所有事就是使我们生气和批评我们,但都是为了我们好。

2. 根据语境可知,空处前后是并列关系,设空处连接前后is believed to bring good luck and wealth和drive away bad fortune两个谓语部分。故填and。
3. 分析句子可知,be similar to表示“与……相似”,是固定短语,故填to。
4. 分析句子结构可知,空处修饰名词,应用形容词,professional意为“专业的”。设空处位于句首时,首字母需大写,故填Professional。
5. 分析句子可知,此处为there be句型,空后的主语是名词复数形式,且此处陈述客观事实,应用一般现在时,故填are。
6. dance作“舞蹈,舞步”时是可数名词,根据空前的Most和空后的include可知,此处应用名词复数。故填dances。
7. use sth. to do sth.
故填which。
The next day we noticed there was cigarette ash (烟灰) on the floor. Actually, it was a thief who entered our kitchen and garage. Much to our relief, thanks to Rhubarb, the thief stole nothing. I called the police to report the break-in. I also told them nothing had been taken, but they sent a police officer over to talk with us anyway. In fact, recently many local homes had been broken in on the weekend.
Many people's wallets and purses had been stolen, but mine was right next to the door. Obviously, Rhubarb had scared the thief away before he or she could steal it. When the police officer left, he said we should reward Rhubarb with a big steak dinner. Rhubarb lived to be almost 12 years old, but that night was the only time she barked in her entire life. Fortunately, she never saw the need to warn us of any other danger. We were very thankful to Rhubarb. We loved her like a member of the family.
