Last year at Chicago Academy High School, I joined in the Leukemia&Lymphoma Society's walk-a-thon. I was glad I chose it as a service learning project. We walked around the neighborhood according to the map we were provided earlier. I chose to serve this organization because I wanted to help the people who have leukemia and lymphoma. I felt that raising 40 dollars and walking 3 miles was the least I could do for the children who have to go through all the medical treatments.
This service learning project did not connect any of my 7 classes, although it did allow me to work on my communication skills in a way. It would have been boring to just walk and not to talk to anyone, so I was talking to people while I was walking. The whole experience was positive. I thought that a group of students coming together for this cause was great. The only negative thing I could think of would probably be the cold. I'll make sure of bringing a scarf next year.
The project was not very demanding. I did step out of my comfort zone (舒适区) by asking others for money to donate to the Leukemia& Lymphoma Society. I'm not very used to asking others for money, but I knew the money was for others so it wasn't really that much of a problem.
The experience taught me that there are a lot of diseases people don't know about, and we should all learn about them so we can better help each other.
This project taught me what both of these diseases were. I believe if more people know what these diseases are and how they affect others, they will surely want to help as much as they could.
4. Why did the author take part in the project?
A. To spread knowledge about the diseases.
B. To receive the medical treatment.
C. To improve his communication skills.
D. To collect money for sick children.
5. What did the author think of the service learning project?
A. It was a little boring. B. It was a physical test.
C. It was overall satisfying. D. It was useful for his classes.
6. How did the author probably feel when asking others for money?
A. Awkward. B. Comfortable. C. Confident. D. Sad.
7. What does the author call on us to do?
A. Step out of our comfort zones.
B. Put our health the top concern.
C. Learn more about the diseases.
D. Show more respect for the patients.

Experts are warming about the risks of extreme picky (挑剔的) eating after a teenager living on a diet of chips and crisps developed lasting sight loss. Eye doctors in Bristol cared for the 17-year-old after his sight had gone to the point of blindness. Tests showed he had serious vitamin deficiency (缺乏).
Dr. Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said, "His diet was basically a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on crisps and sometimes white bread and ham, and not really any fruit and vegetables."
The teenager saw his doctor at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet. Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss.
He was not overweight or underweight, but he had lost minerals from his bones, which was really quite shocking for a boy of his age. In terms of his sight loss, he met the standards of being blind. "He had blind spots right in the middle of his sight," said Dr. Denize Atan. "That means he can't drive and would find it really arduous to read, watch TV or recognize faces."
Dr. Denize Atan said that parents should learn about the harm that can be caused by picky eating, and turn to experts for help. For those who are concerned, she advised: "It's best not to be anxious about picky eating, and instead calmly introduce one or two new foods with every meal." She said, "multivitamin tablets can supplement (补充) a diet, but cannot take the place of eating healthily." "It's much better to take in vitamins through a varied and balanced diet," she said, "adding that too many certain vitamins, including vitamin A, can be harmful, so you don't want to overdo it."

A. The diet of the boy is not balanced.
B. Fruit and vegetables are rich in vitamins.
C. Picky eating is common among teenagers.
D. The cause of the boy's disease is unknown.
9. Why did the boy go to see his doctor at the age of 14?

B. To get some help to lose weight.
C. To be treated for his discomfort.
D. To slow down his progressive sight loss.
10. What does the underlined word "arduous" in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Important. B. Boring. C. Meaningless. D. Difficult.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Reasons behind the boy's serious illness.
B. Suggestions for the boy's family to care for him.
C. Advice for parents worried about picky eating.

Ford is showing its first all-electric sport utility vehicle (车辆), or SUV-the Mustang Mach-E, marking a major change in the U. S. car industry. The new Mustang can travel between 370 and 480 kilometers before needing an electrical charge.
There are 18 electric vehicle models for sale in the U.S.The research group IHS Markit expects that number to grow to 80 by 2022. New vehicles will include pick up trucks and SUVs that are popular with American buyers.
Last year, electric vehicles made up only 1.5 percent of new vehicle sales worldwide. Auto Industry research company LMC Automotive predicts that will rise to 2.2 percent this year. In the U.S., electric vehicles were only 1.2 percent of sales in 2018. It is expected to be the same this year. Automakers, however, see room for growth. They note that electric vehicles are getting 250 miles or more on a single charge. That means a buyer no longer needs to worry about running out of power during a day's usual drive. Because of the added models and increased power, LMC predicts that they will make up 17 percent of worldwide sales and 7 percent of U.S. sales in 2030.
The first-generation of electric vehicles were simply existing models that were changed to be electric to meet government fuel economy rules. They did not sell well largely because they could not travel more than 100 miles between charges. But now, many can go farther than the average one-day driving distance. The five-passenger Mach-E looks like a traditional Mustang.
Engineers say the least costly model will be able to travel about 370 kilometers on one charge. The most costly model will be able to travel 483 kilometers.
Some experts say the Mustang Mach-E marks the start of an increase in electric vehicles offered by top U. S.carmakers. However, some are not so positive. Stephanie Brinley, an auto expert for IHS Markit, said electric vehicle choices may expand before demand. "There is likely to be a period where the number of choices will increase faster than demand and sales for each will be low," she said.
12. What is IHS Markit's expectation of the electric vehicle?
A. It has more models.
B. It goes on sale soon.
C. It is more environment-friendly.
D. It is more popular with customers.
13. What do the numbers in paragraph 3 show about electric vehicles?
A. There will be increasing demand for SUVs.
B. There will be large growth space for their sales.
C. There will be more pressure on their power supplies.
D. There will be more competition between automakers.
14. How did the author develop the fourth paragraph?
A. By giving examples. B. By introducing new ideas.
C. By following time order. D. By making comparisons.
15. What's Stephanie Brinley's attitude towards electric vehicles' future?
A. Positive. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

"I don't want to go." Maria moved her feet slightly and hung her shoulders. Mom continued packing a bag. "We're going to Uncle Rich's farm in Montana for summer vacation. He's your father's brother, and we go there every year."
Maria stormed out of her mom's room and said angrily, "Nobody ever thinks of me!" "That's enough. We're going," replied Mom angrily, too.
Their August vacation came sooner than Maria wanted. Before she knew it, she and the family were at Uncle Rich's farm. Uncle Rich grabbed her dad and hugged him. "Good to see you," said Uncle Rich. Maria's brother and sister were twins and two years younger, so they didn't realize what an inconvenience and bore being on a farm was. They raced to see animals. Maria grabbed her bag. "I'm going to my room," she told her parents.
"Wait a minute, Maria," said Uncle Rich. "I have got something to show you. You come too," he said to Maria's parents. At the barn, Maria saw a horse. It was of medium size, It had a fine, soft black coat and one white foot. There was a wide white patch (斑点) that ran down the center of its face. Maria fell in love with it at first sight. "Wow! What a horse!"
"He's a mustang," said Uncle Rich. "Mustangs are free horses who live in the wild. We found him stuck in the mud down by the river. I didn't know how he got there. My friend and I roped him and managed to get him out. This mustang is a beauty."
Maria kicked the dirt. "Can I help care for him " Then she felt her heart beating in expectation. Uncle Rich laughed. "You bet! The more hands we have, the better. Just don't get too attached. Once we're sure he's okay, we will have to set him free. Mustangs went from over a million at the beginning of the 20th century to less than 17, 000 in 1970. They were hunted illegally for meat."
