Kate Bowler had it all. She was married in her 20s, had a baby in her 30s and landed her dream job teaching at Duke University. Then she was told at age 35, when her son had just turned 1 year old, that she had incurable cancer.
Bowler is receiving her cancer treatment, and hopefully it will keep her cancer at bay, but she is not sure if she has months or even weeks left. Bowler has generously shared her insights(深刻见解) in a recent essay. She wrote that she began each New Year as most of us do with a wish list in hand, but those wishes are just things we plan to do in the weeks or months to come. Cancer has taught her to make the most of whatever time she has left rather than keep thinking about the past or future.
When I first worked with terminal(晚期的) cancer patients in my early20s, I took it for granted(认为……是理所当然) that I could reward myself with a nice meal after work. When caring for patients, most of whom were confined(限制) to their beds all day and many of whom found it hard to keep food down. I learned to stop taking such simple pleasures for granted.
It is always believed that love is more powerful than suffering or death. And Bowler's focus on her husband and son, even in the face of suffering and death proves that truth. She begged her sister-in-law to tell her husband to remarry if she died, because she didn't want her death to end his life as well. Bowler wrote, "Life is so beautiful. Life is so hard." She experienced both sides of that when she noticed an elderly gentleman lovingly touching his wife's hair as she received her treatment in the hospital.
4. What was Bowler's life like before the age of 35?
A. Satisfying. B. Uncertain. C. Unusual. D. Hard.
5. What does the underlined phrase in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Beyond reach. B. Under control. C. On guard. D. In sight.
6. What made the author start to value the simple pleasures of life?
A. The hope for awards and praise.
B. The training in cancer treatment.
C. The suffering of terminal cancer patients.
D. The difficulty in looking after cancer patients.
7. What impressed Bowler during her treatment in the hospital?
A. The support from family matters a lot in hard times.
B. Life also contains beauties in spite of the hardships.
C. The pain of cancer patients is unbearable.
D. Life is full of uncertainties and difficulties.
C
The fire at Notre-Dame de Paris has been put out, but its spire and a large part of its wooden roof have been damaged. The terrible damage causes a sudden pain for people all over the world. What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore.
But the good news is that we can see them through a video game called Assassin's Creed Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre-Dame as it was before the fire. Further, with virtual (虚拟的) reality technology one can even look around the undamaged Notre-Dame as if it were still there. Maybe digital technology could help to better protect the architectural cultural heritage.
The idea of making digital models of ancient buildings to save their data dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning(扫描) the ancient buildings, building 3D models with a series of images, as well as measuring everything accurately, engineers can make a copy as accurate as the real one.
As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital model has great useful value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them. The virtual tour of the Mogao Caves in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous through the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hanover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics.
Of course, however accurate a model is, it is not the original. Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but digital technology offers a useful way to preserve the architectural cultural heritage at the moment.
8. What can we see about Notre-Dame in the game?
A. The big fire. B. Its original look.
C. Its wooden shape. D. The damaged Notre-Dame.
9. What do engineers do to create a digital copy of the ancient buildings?
A. Build 3D models of full size.
B. Scan photos of the buildings.
C. Measure all their parts exactly.
D. Take apart the ancient buildings.
10. How does the author prove the useful value of the digital copy?
A. By giving examples. B. By classification.
C. By comparison. D. By listing data.
11. What is the author's attitude towards the application of the technology?
A. Delighted. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Unconcerned.
D
A new study suggests that long periods in space can cause the human heart to shrink(缩小). The study—by a team of American researchers—comes as the U.S. makes plans to build a long-term base on the moon and prepares to send astronauts to Mars.
Part of the study was based on the experiences of the retired astronaut Scott Kelly. The U. S. space agency NASA says that during his career, Kelly spent more time in space than any other American astronaut. One of Kelly s stays aboard the International Space Station(ISS) lasted 340 days. Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center(UT Southwestern) in Dallas collected and analyzed the physical data during Kelly s long stay aboard the ISS. The goal was to learn the effects of weightlessness on heart health and performance. The team found that during Kelly s stay in space, the left ventricle(心室) of his heart shrank about 0.74 grams per week.
Dr. Benjamin Levine is a professor at UT Southwestern. He was the leader of the research. In a statement, he explained that because of the conditions in space, the heart does not have to work as hard to pump(输送) blood uphill from the feet. Over time, this can cause shrinkage. In an effort to keep their hearts and bodies healthy in space, astronauts are required to perform different kinds of exercises throughout their stay.
Reductions in heart size are also seen in patients who spend long periods in bed because they are lying flat and the heart does not have to work as hard to pump. A second part of the study examined data from a long-distance swimmer who spent nearly a year trying to cross the Pacific Ocean. The swimmer, Benoit Lecomte, was chosen because he swam more than 2,800 kilometers over 159days. Levine says long-distance swimming has similar effects on weightlessness. The study showed that during Lecomte s swim, his left heart ventricle shrank about 0.72 grams per week.
12. How did the researchers carry out their study
A. By interviewing astronauts.
B. By examining collected information.
C. By experimenting aboard the ISS.
D. By comparing people in different fields.
13. What are astronauts asked to do to keep their hearts fit in space
A. Do various exercises. B. Get regular blood tests.
C. Stay in space for less time. D. Stand on their heads sometimes.
14. Who is least likely to suffer from a shrunk heart according to the text
A. A patient spending a long time in bed.
B. An astronaut traveling in space for long.
C. A long-distance professional swimmer.
D. A well-trained marathon runner.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. New Ways to Fight Heart Diseases
B. The U.S. Builds a Medical Center in Space
C. Long Space Flights Can Shrink the Heart
D. Long-distance Swimming Keeps Your Heart Fit

38. 阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Recently I was watching a stand-up comedy sketch(幽默小品) by a comedian called Trevor Noah, a mixed-race comedian from South Africa who often discusses important topics. I was extremely impressed with his performance. The part which struck me most was his advice about travelling. He said, "The one thing you will never waste your money on is travelling." In my opinion, this sentence should be everyone's life motto(座右铭).
This year I've had the opportunity to do a lot of travelling around Europe and it has shown me first-hand how much you can learn and develop by visiting different places. It is so wonderful to be able to go to a different country, listen to the different language, try local food and experience the different culture. Travelling allows you to step out of your comfort zone.
I've personally noticed how different I am since I started exploring more. Travelling has made me so much more confident and independent. It involves (涉及) being able to find good train or plane tickets, getting yourself to the airport, not to mention trying to find your way around a brand-new city. While you can be nervous at first, after a few trips you realise that maps are your best friend and it really isn't that difficult to figure out public transport. Travelling also helps you develop your organization skills! It is important to figure out how to get to different tourist attractions and plan your time wisely. However, it is also nice to learn to relax. On top of that, hostels, which are the best and cheapest, are a great way to meet new people from all around the world. It is fantastic when young people from different parts of the world come together. I've met so many strange and wonderful people this way.
So this is my advice—try and travel as much as possible, because the experience you will gain from travelling can't be taught at school and it will change your life.
