Unit 1 How can we become good learners
(Section A 1a-1c)
Level: 9th Grade
Objectives:
To introduce and practice vocabulary related to learning.
To develop listening and comprehension skills.
To practice expressing opinions using "I think" and "I believe".
To develop critical thinking skills by reflecting on personal learning habits.
Materials:
Textbook: "New Target 9" by People's Education Press.
Handout with comprehension questions.
Chart paper and markers.
Warm-up:
Ask students to reflect on their own learning experiences and habits. Ask questions such as "What do you think are the characteristics of a good learner " or "What kind of learner are you "
Presentation:
Introduce the vocabulary related to learning, such as motivation, memorization, participation, etc. Use pictures and examples to help students understand the meaning of each word.
Model expressing opinions using "I think" and "I believe". Write a few sentence starters on the board, such as "I believe that good learners...", "I think that a successful learner...", and ask students to complete the sentences in pairs or small groups.
Practice:
Distribute the handout with comprehension questions and ask students to listen to the recording in Section A 1a.
Have students answer the questions individually or in pairs.
Ask a few students to share their answers with the class.
Divide the class into small groups and give each group a piece of chart paper and markers. Ask each group to brainstorm and write down as many characteristics of good learners as they can think of. Encourage them to use the vocabulary words introduced in class.
After the groups have completed their charts, ask each group to share their ideas with the class. Encourage discussion and ask follow-up questions.
Production:
Ask students to write a reflection on their own learning habits and goals. They can use sentence starters such as "I believe I am a successful learner when...", "I think I need to improve my learning by...", or "I want to achieve the following learning goals this year...".
Have a few students share their reflections with the class.
Conclusion:
Summarize the key vocabulary and grammar points covered in the lesson. Encourage students to reflect on their own learning experiences and develop good learning habits.
For homework, ask students to:
Write a paragraph about a learning experience they have had, using at least three of the vocabulary words introduced in class.
Practice expressing opinions using "I think" and "I believe" with a family member or friend. They can discuss a topic related to learning, such as "What motivates you to learn " or "What strategies do you use to memorize information "
Review the comprehension questions from Section A 1a and try to answer them again without looking at the textbook or recording.
Create a study plan for an upcoming test or exam, using the characteristics of good learners brainstormed in class. Encourage them to set specific goals and strategies for each characteristic.
