Unit 12 Life is full of the unexpected
(Section A 1a-1c)
Grade Level: 9th grade
Objectives:
Students will be able to understand and use vocabulary related to unexpected events.
Students will be able to listen for specific information and complete a chart.
Students will be able to use the present perfect tense to describe past experiences.
Materials:
Textbook: "New Target English" 9th grade, Unit 12, Section A
Whiteboard and markers
Chart paper and markers
Handout with chart for students to complete
Procedure:
Warm-up
Ask students to brainstorm unexpected events they have experienced. Write their responses on the board.
Ask students to share how they felt during these unexpected events.
Vocabulary
Review vocabulary related to unexpected events from the textbook. Write each word on the board and have students repeat the words after you.
Divide the class into pairs and have them practice using the vocabulary in sentences.
Listening
Play the audio recording for Section A 1a and have students listen for specific information.
Hand out the chart for students to complete while they listen.
After the recording is finished, ask students to compare their charts with their partners.
Speaking
Have students work in pairs and ask them to share an unexpected event they have experienced using the present perfect tense.
Remind them to use the present perfect tense (subject + have/has + past participle) to describe the experience.
Walk around the classroom and provide assistance as needed.
Group Work
Divide the class into groups of three or four.
Assign each group a different unexpected event (e.g. car accident, power outage, etc.).
Have students discuss the event in their groups, using the vocabulary and grammar they have learned in this lesson.
After they have discussed the event, have each group share their discussion with the class.
Closure
Ask students to reflect on what they learned in today's lesson.
Have a class discussion about how they can prepare for unexpected events in their daily lives.
Assessment:
Observe students during group work and note their ability to use vocabulary and grammar appropriately.
Evaluate completed charts for accuracy and completeness.
Monitor student participation in class discussions.
Extension:
Have students create a role play or skit based on an unexpected event. They can use the vocabulary and grammar they learned in class to act out the situation.
Ask students to write a paragraph about how they would prepare for an unexpected event, such as a natural disaster or sudden illness.
Homework:
Ask students to write a journal entry about an unexpected event they experienced or witnessed. They should describe what happened, how they felt, and what they learned from the experience.
Have students find a news article or story about an unexpected event and summarize it in their own words. They should also write a paragraph about how the situation could have been prevented or better managed.
