To introduce and practice vocabulary related to emotions and feelings.
To use adjectives and adverbs to describe emotions and feelings.
To develop students’ listening and speaking skills.
Materials:
Handout with vocabulary words
Video clip of a movie scene
Whiteboard and markers
Procedure:
Warm-up:
Ask students to name a movie that made them feel sad and to describe how they felt while watching it.
Vocabulary:
Give students a handout with vocabulary words related to emotions and feelings.
Review the words with students, asking them to repeat after you and explaining any unfamiliar words.
Listening:
Play a video clip of a movie scene for students.
Ask students to watch the clip and identify the emotions and feelings expressed by the characters.
Play the clip again if necessary.
Speaking:
Divide the class into pairs.
Give each pair a list of emotions and feelings.
Ask students to take turns describing a personal experience that made them feel that emotion or feeling, using adjectives and adverbs to describe it. For example, “I felt extremely excited when I won first place in the race.”
Have each pair present their descriptions to the class.
Wrap-up:
Ask students what they learned about using adjectives and adverbs to describe emotions and feelings.
Have students share their thoughts on the importance of expressing emotions and feelings in a healthy way.
Assessment:
Observe students during the speaking activity and note their ability to use adjectives and adverbs to describe emotions and feelings.
Evaluate their participation in the class discussion.
Extension:
To extend this lesson, you could have students do a writing activity where they write a short story that evokes a specific emotion or feeling. They could use the vocabulary words and adjectives and adverbs they learned in class to describe the characters and their actions. After they finish writing, have students share their stories with a partner or the class and ask for feedback on how well they conveyed the emotion or feeling.
Homework:
For homework, ask students to watch a movie or TV show and write a short paragraph about the emotions and feelings they experienced while watching it. They should use the vocabulary words and adjectives and adverbs they learned in class to describe their reactions. Encourage them to reflect on why they felt a certain way and how the characters and plot contributed to their emotional response. Collect and review the paragraphs at the beginning of the next class session.
