For almost 100 years, the Winter Olympics has been a celebration of snow and ice sports around the world. It is a special event that only happens once every four years.
Although the Winter Olympics started with just five sports across nine disciplines（项目）in France in 1924, it has grown to include seven sports across 15 different disciplines and has been hosted in 12 countries across three continents （大陆）. South Korea held the 23rd Winter Olympic Games in 2018. In 2022, for the first time ever in the Games’ history, Beijing will become the first city to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics.
China has come a long way and achieved（实现）many goals since it took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time in 1980. In this short period of time, China’s players have won medals in six of the event’s sports. Short track speed skating（短道速滑）has been an area of expertise（专长）for China.
China’s love for winter sports has been growing. The Ministry of Education has set a goal of building 5, 000 special schools by 2025 to improve winter sports education.
The government has also been encouraging primary and middle schools to add winter sports to their subjects. Many provinces and cities have already acted on this suggestion. Classes will be set up in schools in northern China to improve interest in winter sports. In southern China, schools can work with ice rinks（溜冰场）and winter sports clubs.
Beijing has already set a good example. It is reported that nearly 840, 000 students in the city have begun taking winter sports lessons, including skating and skiing lessons.

A holiday on a mountain bike can be really exciting. As you ride along, problems are forgotten, and you can get healthy at the same time! It’s a great way to see the country and you can stop whenever to walk along the way. You’d be surprised how far you can travel in two weeks. When you go by bike you can take routes (线路) a car couldn’t, so you’ll find that your journey goes up and down hills, through forests and across valleys…much more interesting than a motorway! Like most sports, mountain biking isn’t dangerous but you should have the right equipment (装备). It’s important to wear a helmet and suitable clothing, and to choose a route that’s up to your health conditions. It’s also quite cheap, because once you’ve bought the bike (you can find good bargains in second-hand markets and on the Internet), very little extra money is needed, except for regular maintenance of the bike. Anyway, it’s always worth it!
Some technical (技术的) knowledge is useful, however, if you are thinking of doing a long journey. You should be prepared to make minor repairs. For example, you might have to change a tyre, or repair the brakes and there will be other small problems during a trip. Most of this knowledge can be found in a good bike repair book. Of course, if you don’t have these skills, it doesn’t mean you can’t go on any long trips. Perhaps you could go with someone who is good at mending things!
One other important piece of equipment is a First Aid kit. It’s more possible for you to get small cuts and bruises than major injuries, but even the best bike-riders fall off sometimes. It’s all part of the experience!
