UNIT 3
SEA EXPLORATION
To know about China’s research vessels
To think about the significance of sea exploration
What is this in the picture
It’s a vessel.
Why do we need vessels like this
They could help us do some research at sea.
Why do people explore the ocean
Ocean exploration is about making discoveries, searching for things that are unusual and unexpected. Through ocean exploration, we collect data and information needed to address both current and emerging science and management needs. We can more effectively manage, conserve, regulate, and use ocean resources.
Deep into the Sea
The video is about Kexue, China’s most sophisticated research vessel, which is designed to conduct a wide range of tasks. Based on Kexue, China has taken the lead in building a world-class platform for marine research.
1. What do you know about Kexue
2. What do you want to know about Kexue
It is the most sophisticated research vessel. Its tasks include:
water body detection
deep-sea environment investigation
atmospheric exploration
conducting onboard experiments
collecting geological samples
Look at the pictures from the video below and think about the following questions.
1. What do you think these people are doing in the pictures
2. What could be done on the research vessel
Check your answers in Before You Watch.
1 Researchers on the Kexue are raising a research buoy off the ship and lowering it into the water.
2 Researchers on the Kexue are conducting onboard experiments.
3 A researcher on the Kexue is looking at a monitor while using a joystick to manoeuvre the Faxian submersible vehicle in deep water.
4 Researchers on the Kexue are manoeuvring a large instrument into the place on the deck of the ship.
5 Researchers on the Kexue are releasing a balloon for atmospheric investigation.
6 Researchers on the Kexue are lowering nets into the water to collect samples.
1 The sea covers over/under two-thirds of our planet.
2 Kexue is regarded as a moving laboratory/factory on the sea.
3 The IOCAS is the Institute/Initiative of Oceanology, Chinese
Academy of Sciences/Scientists.
4 The Faxian vehicle has surveyed more than 3,000/400 sites and
has collected 3/3,000 tonnes of geological samples.
Circle the best words to complete the sentences below.
Answer the following questions.
1 When was Kexue first put into operation
2 What is the purpose of designing thise vessel
3 What achivements has Kexue made
In 2014.
Thanks to the Kexue, the IOCAS has taken the lead in building a world-class platform for marine research: marine landforms, seabed environments and water bodies investigation.
It’s designed to conduct a wide range of tasks, such as sea surface and water body detection, deep-sea environment investigation, atmospheric exploration, and the conducting of onboard experiments.
4 What is the function of Faxian
5 What did IOCAS conduct research on the Western Pacific
Ocean System for
To gather an enormous amount of environmental information and to carry out field experiments.
To research and investigate major scientific issues of the extreme marine environment.
6 Why is marine science important for China today
Deep-sea research has become an important strategic step for China to develop into a marine power. It is also an important symbol of the country’s level of technology and overall strength.
Discuss the following questions in pairs.
1 Human beings have explored less than 5% of the world's
oceans. Why do you think we have explored so little of the oceans so far
2 What do you think is the difference between Zheng He's
voyage 600 years ago and China's sea exploration today
Read the news report about Jiaolong and Xiangyanghong on page 76 and try to answer the questions.
What made China’s deep-sea research be carried out efficiently
What tasks have been done so far
What achievements have been made in China’s marine research
