单个词作状语
When the clock struck twelve, all the lights went out.
状语从句
The engineer often works at night.
短语作状语
状语用来修饰动词、形容词、副词、介词短语或整个句子，可以由副词、介词短语、不定式、分词结构、形容词、名词短语、复合结构或从句表示
1、修饰性状语
具有修饰功能的状语，根据不同的含义可分为时间状语、目的状语、程度状语、结果状语、原因状语、条件状语、伴随状语、方式状语、让步状语、频度状语等，可用来修饰动词、形容词、副词、名词短语、介词短语等
The president will visit China next month. (时间，修饰句子)
I totally agree with you. (程度，修饰动词)
Although my car is old, it still runs very fast. (让步，修饰名词)
状语的功能
2、评注性状语
对说话的方式及内容进行评说
To tell you the truth, I can do nothing about it.
Personally, I don’t agree with you.
比较：
Generally, the more you pay for the computer, the better the system is.
We generally go to Florida for our holidays.
状语的功能
3、连接性状语
用在句子与句子之间起连接作用
1). 表示列举或总结: first(ly), second(ly), last(ly); for one thing… for another (thing); to begin with; next, then; to conclude, to sum up等
2). 表示转折或对比: however, nevertheless, while, though, after all, on the other hand, meanwhile, on the contrary, instead等

用在句子与句子之间起连接作用
3). 表示因果逻辑推理: hence, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently, so,, in that case等
4). 进行解释及意义的增补或引申: similarly, likewise, equally, in other words, also, moreover, in addition, besides, furthermore, above all, what’s more等
5). 用于转换话题: by the way等
