一、阅读单选
My name is Pablo. I think I’m a lucky guy. I have a good family, and we live in a nice neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. People travel here from many countries for their vacations. We have beautiful beaches, hotels, restaurants, shopping and sports.
However, in my beautiful hometown, there are also very poor neighborhoods. These areas are crowded and have a lot of crime (犯罪). Life is terrible for many of the children in these areas. Some don’t really have a childhood because they’re homeless and live on the streets. They don’t have education. They don’t have enough food. Many use drugs or have illnesses or other problems.
Last year, I came back to Puerto Vallarta from my university in Mexico City, I spent one year as a volunteer with an organization called Outreach International. They have several programs. I volunteered for one program to help street children. I worked in a home for street children (all boys, at this one). At this home, the boys have a place to sleep and three meals daily. The home keeps the boys off the streets. It shows them another way of life. As a volunteer, I helped to prepare meals. I taught games—such as basketball, football and art. I helped the kids with their homework. These kids can be fun. They have a lot of energy, but they’re also really tough (坚韧的). Their long and difficult time on the streets make them strong and not always “sweet little children”.
At these boys’ home, I met two other volunteers—Brian from Canada and Greg from Australia. In many ways, we were very similar. We were the same age, came from good homes and had a good education. They were both college students like me. We became very good friends. Now, we email each other.
It was the best and most difficult year of my life. I learned a lot that year.

In general, the more Westernized (西方化的) the place is, the more likely you will be expected to leave a tip (小费). To make your trip a little easier, here’s a guide to tipping across some Asian countries.
BangkokIf you’re staying at one of Bangkok’s five-star hotels, you should tip the porter (行李员) 20 to 50 baht (泰国货币单位), depending on how many bags you have. Taxis are now metered in Bangkok. Local custom is to round the fare (车费) up to the nearest five baht.
Hong KongIf the service is good, add another 10% to the bill, up to HK $100 in an especially nice restaurant. For HK $10 hotel porters should do it at all but the nicest hotels where a new HK $20 bill may be more acceptable. When in a taxi, round up (凑整数) to the nearest dollar.
Kuala LumpurIf you are at a hotel restaurant, expect a 10% service charge. But at local restaurants, there’s no need to add a tip. At five-star hotels, one or two ringgit (马来西亚货币单位) will content a porter. Like Bangkok, many taxis are now metered so you can just round up to the nearest ringgit.
SeoulIf you’re at a Korean barbecue joint (烧烤处), there’s no need to add anything extra. But a nice Italian restaurant may require a 10% contribution. If you’re at a top-end hotel, so expect to pay 500~1000 won per bag. Taxi drivers don’t accept a tip. Keep the change for yourself.

When my son, Mark, was in the third grade, he saved all his pocket money for over three months to buy holiday presents for those he loved. The third Saturday in December Mark said that he had made his list and had twenty dollars in his pocket.
I drove him to a nearby supermarket. Mark picked up a hand basket and went off on his own while I waited patiently reading a book in the car. It took Mark over 45 minutes to choose his presents. The clerk rang in his purchases (所购物品) as I politely looked the other way. Mark kept within his budget (预算) and reached into his pocket for his money. It was not there! There was a hole in his pocket, but no money. Mark stood in the middle of the store holding his basket, tears rolling down his cheeks. His whole body was shaking with his sobs. Then an amazing thing happened. A customer in the store came up to Mark. She knelt down and took him in her arms.
“You would do me the greatest favor if you let me replace (补还) your money,” said the woman. “It would be the most wonderful present you could ever give me. I only ask that one day you pass it on. One day, when you are grown-up, I would like you to find someone you can help. When you help this other person, I know you will feel as good about it as I do now.”
Mark took the money, dried his tears and ran to the checkout counter as fast as he could. I think we all enjoyed our gifts that year almost as much as Mark enjoyed giving them to us.
I would like to say “thank you” to that very kind woman. I would like to tell her that four years later Mark went house to house collecting blankets and clothes for the homeless people in the Oakland fire—and he thought of her. And I want to promise her that Mark will never forget to keep passing it on.

April 22 is World Earth Day— a day to remind people to protect our planet. On that day, my family and I took the “bottle of garbage challenge”. We challenged ourselves to produce as little garbage as possible in 24 hours. The garbage needed to fit inside of a 700-milliliter bottle.
I was highly alert (警觉的) that day. I thought about what waste every action would produce. When I solved math problems on paper, I tried to use every blank space. I also reused a straw (吸管) and napkins (纸巾). In the end, I put all my trash in a 600 ml bottle. There were apple cores, eraser crumbs (碎屑) and other things.
Grandma needed to cook supper, so she had plenty of kitchen waste. When she cooked, she picked off leaves. There were also eggshells and food packages. And of course, there were leftovers after dinner. But she asked us to eat most of the dishes and waste as little food as possible! Although grandma produced lots of trash, she was able to fit it all into a 700 ml bottle!
My father and mother worked online. They sent and received emails. So they didn’t produce any paper waste and made the least trash in my family.
I’ve benefited a lot from this activity. I realized that everyone can make lots of trash every day. In the long run, it will become a great burden (负担) for our mother Earth. We should start with small actions to protect it.

On April 16th, Shenzhou XIII astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu safely came back to Earth from the Tiangong space station. There are many interesting facts about their landing. Let’s take a look!
Speedy returnThe mission set a new speed record. When the Shenzhou XII came back from the space station in 2021, it took about 28 hours. This time, Shenzhou XIII cut down the number of orbits (环绕地球圈数) from 11 to five. It took just 9 hours to return! Landing upright The re-entry capsule (返回舱) landed upright (直立的). This landing position is rare in China’s space flight history. Only Shenzhou VI and Shenzhou XIII have successfully done so. To achieve this, astronauts must let go of the parachute (降落伞) with precise timing. Landing upright makes sure that astronauts have the softest landing. Keeping seated The astronauts felt good after landing. But they still needed to sit on chairs. The long space journey changed their bodies. Their muscles and bones became weaker. In the next few months, they will gradually get used to Earth’s gravity (重力).
25.How long does it take Shenzhou XIII take to return A.5 hours. B.9 hours. C.11 hours. D.28 hours.
26.________ re-entry capsule landed upright in China’s space flight history.

During the COVID-19 epidemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic,” said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.
So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic.
According to their new study, reduced loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration and skills.
“When people are absorbed in what they are doing, they enter a state (状态) called ‘flow’,” Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that require us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex (复杂的) computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re likely to feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”. On the contrary (相反地), if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become absorbed and focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.”
However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”
28.According to John Dattilo’s study, reduced loneliness is related to ________.
A.doing exercise B.doing enjoyable activities
C.developing skills D.increasing concentration
29.The underlined phrase “are absorbed in” means ________ in English.
A.depend on B.be concentrated on C.participate in D.work on

A.doing a task that’s too easy B.doing a complex computer program
C.watching television D.painting if you have artistic skills
31.What’s the passage mainly about
A.How to develop concentration.
B.What can we use our skills to do.
C.How to reduce loneliness.
D.The importance of “flow”.
