Last week we went to the countryside to have a picnic. We bought some sandwiches, fruits and water for lunch. We started out quite early before there was too much traffic. After two hours’ driving, we came to a nice place. It was at the foot of a hill and near a river, with some large trees beside it. As it was a very hot day, we parked the car under a large tree and went for a swim in the river. The water was refreshing. After having a swim we had lunch in the cool shade under the trees.
Then we went for a walk. We saw some beautiful birds and butterflies. After walking for about an hour we returned to the car. However, we couldn’t get the car started. Finally we had to push the car off the road and wait for help. Of course, the car’s breaking down spoilt(破坏)our picnic in the end!

Results of an international research of educational achievement in 2018 came out on Tuesday this week. Students from China and Singapore came out on top.
The test is given every three years to 15-year-olds around the world. It tests their knowledge in reading, science and math. The test is held by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development(OECD). It’s reported that about 600,000 students in 79 nations and educational systems took part in the two-hour computer-based exam last year. They said schools in each country are carefully chosen to make sure that students come from a wide mix of backgrounds and abilities.
The test scores are watched closely by the leaders of every country. The results show American students are OK in reading and science, but weak in math. There was a little boy whose name was Peter. He lived in a village close to the sea. The villagers built sea walls to keep sea water from the doors of the houses. But once the sea walls almost put the village in great danger.
One day, Peter was walking on his way back home along the sea wall when it began to rain. All of a sudden, he saw a hole in the wall, from which the sea water was running. Peter shouted for help because he knew the hole meant that the sea was making its way through the sea wall, but no answer came. He realized he should do something else as quickly as possible, or the sea water could be pouring over the whole village. He started to rush towards his village. At the same time, the rain became heavier and heavier.
It was getting dark, but Peter rushed on and on. He felt cold and hungry. In the rainstorm, he fell down over and over again. Many times he thought about giving up, but he fought on. He remembered his father’s words, “Lots of strong men have made every effort to build the walls which can keep the village safe from danger. The sea walls are really important.”
Finally, when the boy’s father saw him, Peter had been black and blue all over. The boy told the villagers what had happened to the sea wall. They. repaired it in time. “Thank God! Several years ago, an overseas student lived in Germany. After years of hard work, the student graduated with amazing achievements. Everyone thought he was going to get a good job easily and have a bright future.
But to his disappointment, he was not even given the chance for an interview! The third time he was refused, he couldn’t help telephoning the company to ask why they didn’t want him. The answer was simple. “We don’t offer jobs to dishonest people in Germany.”
What was wrong, you might wonder The truth is, shortly after he arrived in Germany, this clever student found that it was easy to skip(越过)buying subway tickets. So in order to save money, he often went without a ticket. As a result, he had been caught without a ticket in the subway four times.

Benjamin Franklin was born on January 17, 1706 in Boston. When he was 12, he began working at his brother’s print shop, where he learned a lot about writing and printing. He even wrote some articles in the New England Courant. At the age of 17, he ran away from home and went to Philadelphia.
He also took an active role in the community. In 1736, he set up a volunteer fire company and also became the postmaster of the city the next year.
He traveled for five years starting from 1757 around Great Britain. He also made many more trips to France and Britain.
He returned to America in 1787, where he served as a delegate (代表) to the Constitutional Convention. He played a strong role here as an elder statesman, who shared his world view (观点). He was very happy to see the United States become independent (独立) and take up the United States Constitution. Unfortunately, he died in 1790 at the age of 84, only three years after the Constitution was put into place. He was also famous — still is, 200 some years after his death.
