Unit 5 What were you doing when the rainstorm came
阅读能力提升训练习题(附答案)
A
When I was a child in Minnesota, watermelon was too expensive for my family. One of my father’s friends,Bernie, was a rich businessman. He had a large store in Saint Paul.
Every summer, when the first watermelons arrived,Bernie would give us a call. My father and I would go to Bernie’s place. We would sit on the dock(码头) happily and get ready for a big meal.
Bernie would take a big watermelon out,cut it up,give both of us a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we three would put our faces into the watermelon, eating it happily.
In my father’s eyes,Bernie was a real rich man. Later I learned that my father thought Bernie was rich because of the way he lived his life. Bernie knew when to stop working, get together with friends and enjoy his “watermelon”.Some of us,no matter(不管) how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat our “watermelon”. If you don’t take the time to sit on the “dock” and enjoy life’s small pleasures, your work is probably injuring your life.
When I grew up,because I was too busy making money as a doctor,I forgot the lesson I once learned on the dock. Well, now I’ve relearned it. Though I’m still busy working as a doctor,I will try to slow down and take the time to enjoy the small pleasures of my life.

There was a terrible earthquake in my country. Many people were killed and many houses fell down. After the earthquake, the newspapers reported many stories about families who were in trouble.
One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper,a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought this would be a good chance to teach my children to
help those who were less lucky. I said to my seven-year-old twins,Brad and Brett, and three-year-old daughter Meghan,“We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We’ll share what we have with them.”
I filled a box with some food and old clothes. While I was doing this,I encouraged the boys to donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and put them in the box. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Ava,her favorite doll. She put it on top of the other toys.“Oh,dear,” I said.“You don’t have to give Ava. You love Ava so much.” Meghan said,“Ava makes me happy,Mom. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too.”

When I was young,I liked to play jokes on people I knew, especially on my parents and friends. One day my mother was cooking and I was playing with my younger brother Tony. Suddenly I ran to my mother and said: “Tony fell from the open window!” She was very worried and ran out of the kitchen. Then I said: “Don’t worry, I’m just joking.” My mother shouted at me, “If you do it again, I’ll hit you.”
Another day I went swimming with my friends in the sea. I wanted to play a joke on them. In the beginning I swam fast and I called out “Help!” All my friends came to help me. However, they found that I was joking. But half an hour later I wasn’t joking. I was so fast, soon I got tired and couldn’t swim on in water. I tried my best to call my friends for help, but this time nobody came to help me.
