An extremely rare manuscript(手稿) signed by English naturalist Charles Darwin is expected to fetch up to $790,00at a Sotheby’s auction next month. The document contains a passage from the famous 1859 work On the Origin of Species, in which Darwin put forth his theory of evolution.
The document was once thought to be a deserted page from an earlier manuscript of the work. But experts now understand it was written in 1865 and sent to the editor of the Autographic Mirror who had requested a signed writing sample from Darwin.
“While some of Darwin's notes and manuscript pages have survived over the last hundred or more years, he was known to keep revising his publications, often throwing away pages from working drafts as waste paper, making them extremely rare,” Sotheby's said in a statement.
On the Origin of Species was voted the most influential academic book of all time in a public poll held during Academic Book Week in 2015.The book offers Darwin's revolutionary idea that species evolve over generations in the process of natural selection.
Darwin backed up his theory with evidence collected during his 1831—1836 voyage on the H.M S. Beagle, during which he observed and collected specimens (标本) from a number of species. On the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, Darwin noted that the finches(鸣雀)on the island were similar to finches on the mainland; however, the availability of different foods in each area had led to differences in beak shapes.
The manuscript will be placed on display at Sotheby's in New York between Nov.30 and Dec 8, and online bids will be accepted between Now.25 and Dec.8.The auction house estimates that the document will fetch between $600,000 and $790,000.
The auction, which is titled Age of Wonder, will also include a first edition of On the Origin of Species and a copy of scientific paper by Darwin and another naturalist.;

If you’ve ever watched a dog sleep, you’ve probably wondered if animals dream. It’s a difficult question. We still don’t know exactly why humans dream, or why dreams might be important. Studying animal dreams is even harder.
Animal dreams might be very interesting. “I think dreaming gives us a way to relate many human cognitive abilities to animals, such as emotion, memory, and even imagination,“ says David M. Pena-Guzmán, who recently authored When Animals Dream: The Hidden World of Animal Consciousness.
We know monkeys have emotions, but consider spiders, which a recent study suggests may experience REM-like sleep and even dreams. The thought of spider dreams sounds outlandish, but it may be true.
“We have this idea of dreams being an imaginary process with something crazy in it,” says Matthew Wilson, a neurobiologist at MIT. “But when we look into animal models, we’re simply trying to understand what goes on during sleep that might influence learning, memory, and behavior.”
Cats were some of the first animals studied in dream research. Michel Jouvet, a pioneer of sleep studies, proved that cats dreamed in the 1960s.
In REM sleep, human muscles don’t move much despite the brain activity that powers our dreams. The body doesn’t act out our dreams no matter how real they seem. Jouvet learned that, in cats, a part of the brain called the pons seemed to control REM sleep and produce partial paralysis. By removing parts of the pons, Jouvet found with their brains deep in REM sleep the cats began to move as if awake, hunting, jumping and fighting against unseen threats. This provided a window into what was happening in the cats’ sleeping brains.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if actual dreams were found in animals, and I think finally we’ll be able to show that scientifically,” Stanford neurobiologist Philippe Mourrain says. “We’re not the only species able to remember and learn.”;
8. What is the point of studying animal dreams
A.To improve animals’ sleeping quality. B.To find a scientific way to raise animals.
C.To learn about animals’ cognitive abilities. D.To understand the importance of humans’ dreams.;
9. What does the underlined word “outlandish” mean in paragraph 3
A.Special. B.Strange. C.Meaningful. D.Reasonable.;
10. What can we learn from Michel Jouvet’s research on cats’ dreaming
A.Cats dream in a way different from humans.
B.The pons is what keeps cats still in REM sleep.
C.Dreams have very little to do with cats’ behavior.
D.Cats are more active in sleep than when they’re awake.;
11. What does Philippe Mourrain think of animal dreams
A.They will be proved by further research.
B.They are more confusing than people think.
C.The present research is still far from satisfactory.
D.There is a long way to go before they’re understood.

Whenever asked why I chose to become a doctor, I would always explain by telling the story of my adolescence (青春期).
As a fresh graduate of high school, I found it difficult to choose a career path before college. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited choices: be-coming an engineer, a doctor or a financial worker. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle suggested that I do a work placement (实习) to experience business for a month in an international company, and then medicine for another month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a good idea.
I began a month’s placement at a foreign bank. I got to know the rules of financial world, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had a stressful environment. The days started early at 7 a.m., compared to 9 a.m. at the bank, and were filled with endless duties and the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing environment, better working hours and less stress; while the hospital was full of excitement and difficult studying and training. It seemed that the business choice was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.

Dear fellow students,
According to the World Health Organization ( WHO), there are about 80% teenagers around the world lacking exercising. Absolutely, it will cause severe health problems. In my opinion, we should pay more attention to that and exercise regularly every day.
As we all know, most of us think exercising is a waste of time for we are having much homework in high school. We prefer phones to sports. However, sports can strengthen our body and make us energetic, which is beneficial to our study. So, I wonder if all of you can make a plan for daily exercise after hearing my speech. You can choose a sport you like and make a reasonable time for doing it. Make sure you can insist otherwise you cannot gain the effect. Anyhow, I hope you can change your mind and spend more time exercising.
That's all. Thank you for listening !
28. 参考答案
Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus. He hit the road, face down and rolled over. He lay still in the middle of the road as the bus sped away. None of the cars behind stopped. Thinking that he could die any minute, I stopped my car, rushed to him, and carefully examined his breath. With the help of some passers-by, I lifted the unconscious boy into the car and raced back to the hospital. After his family was contacted, and he was wheeled into emergency surgery, I drove home, exhausted but happy.
The next day, when I went to the hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces. In excitement, they held my hands, with a lump in their throats. Feeling their sincere gratitude, I was overwhelmed with a rush of pride. How incredible it was to help save the life of another person! I spent the rest of the day in a state of the most fabulous mood I had ever experienced. Driving home that evening, I decided on my career path, the one full of challenges and stress but also with more senses of satisfaction and pride.
