For many people, 1:00 am is a time for sleeping. However, for 73-year-old Chinese cartoonist C.C.Tsai, 1:00 am is a time to get up and start a new day. He first makes some coffee and stands in front of the window to look at the sky and think about subjects like math and history and life for half an hour. Then, he starts to work on comic books (漫画书).
“I work 365 days a year, 18 hours a day, but at the same time I am not working at all because I am just enjoying what I am doing,” Tsai said.
Tsai was born in Taiwan, China in 1948. He had a gift for drawing when he was very young and became a professional (职业的) cartoonist at just age 15. During his 30s and 40s, he became famous after his comics became bestsellers in Taiwan. He is most famous for his comic books on ancient Chinese classics (中国古代典籍), such as Laozi Speaks and Confucius Speaks. Through funny cartoon images (形象), he brings readers into the ancient world. People have translated his books into 26 different languages and they sell quite well around the world.
Now although Tsai is in his 70s, he has no plans to slow down. He plans to complete 500 new books within (在……内) five years. What a great cartoonist!
