First aid, as its name tells us, refers to the first steps you can take to care for someone who is ill or hurt. The second Saturday in September is World First Aid Day. It stresses the importance of first aid. In 2022, it came on September 10. And the theme* of World First Aid Day 2022 is “First aid and road safety”.
In our daily life, we run into emergencies* now and then. Every year in China, almost 3.2 million people die in emergencies. Experts say that the first 10 minutes after an accident can make a difference between life and death. First aid is the immediate medical attention that can save a person’s life, prevent a situation from getting worse, or help someone recover more quickly.___▲___
Everybody should know basic first aid, but few people actually do.When you do first aid, pay attention to the following “Three Cs”.
★Check the surroundings*
Know the situation. Are there things that might put you at risk of harm Do not rush into a situation where you could end up getting hurt. If there is any danger, ask for professional help immediately. First aid becomes useless if you can’t safely give it without hurting yourself.
★Call for help
Call out for help 3 times before you begin doing first aid. If someone is with you, ask him to call 120. You’d better stay with the injured if there is nobody around.
★Care for the person
Caring for someone who has just met with a serious accident includes both first aid and emotional support*. Remember to stay calm and try to be reassuring. For example, let the person know that help is on its way and that everything will be OK. Other ways to reassure the person include asking his name, interests and if he knows what has happened.

Suddenly a boy came and raced down the street. Looking up at the window, he took off his hat and bowed with a bright smile.
“What a nice boy he is,” said Jennie to herself. “I am so glad he goes by here on his way to school. When he smiles, it is as if the sun is shining. I wish everybody who goes by would look up and smile.”
The next morning, as Jennie sat by the window, she saw George carefully picking his way across the street with a handful of flowers. He stopped in front of her window and asked, “How shall I find the way to your room
Jennie pointed to a nearby alley. George turned in and with some difficulty he found his way to the stairs.

“Did you use to live in the country ” asked George. “Oh, yes, answered Jennie. “We used to live in a beautiful village, and there were trees and flowers, and the air was so sweet.”
“Well, what made you move here ”
“Papa died, and Mama was ill for so long that the money was all gone. Then Mama had to sell the house, and she moved here to try to get work to do.”
“Do you have to sit here all day ” asked George, glancing around thebare room and out into the dismal street.

“No,” said his mother, “he cannot do that, and they would not wish him to do so. But perhaps he can help us think of some ways to assist them so that they can live more comfortably.”
“I am going to give Jennie some of the bananas Grandpa sent me tomorrow,” said George, turning over the leaves of his geography book. “I will put some apples into your basket, and go with you,” said his mother. “But there is one thing we can always give, and sometimes it does more good than nice things to eat, or even money.
