Children know that summer is probably the most fun of all seasons. However, experts say that it is also the most dangerous, especially for children aged 14 and under. In its first study of children’s safety in the US, the National Safe Kids Campaign(NSKC)found that nearly half of the injury-related(与受伤相关的)deaths among children are in summer.
Experts are also surprised by the study’s result. They always know summer is a dangerous season for children. During the summer, children are out of school and spend more time outdoors. They are more likely to get into an accident. “While we encourage children to be active and spend time outdoors, they need to understand the importance of safety. ”said Everett Koop, an expert of the NSKC.
To help children stay safe, the NSKC started a “Make it a Safe Kids Summer” Campaign(运动)during National Safe Kids Week, from May 5 through May 12. Here are some important summer safety tips from the NSKC:
Always wear your seat belt.
Make sure there is an adult around when you decide to go swimming.
Wear a life jacket(救生衣)when on a boat doing water sports.
Obey all traffic laws.

My name is Ann. I worked as a volunteer in 2021 because I wanted to do something to help others. I called some charity shops (慈善商店) to ask if they needed volunteers. Although I didn’t mind where I volunteered, I was glad that one of the Sue Ryder shops said yes. Sue Ryder was a charity very close to my heart because volunteers from Sue Ryder once cared for my dad in the hospital.
Volunteering in the shop helped me know what shop work was like and I was surprised to find how much I really enjoyed doing it. I also found how important the public (公众) were. Lots of people gave us things they didn’t need for the shops to sell. In this way Sue Ryder raised money to care for people with life-changing illness. I always left the charity shop late because I knew how important the work of Sue Ryder was.
Another thing I enjoyed about volunteering was talking with other volunteers in the shop. They were friendly and helpful. I really improved my teamwork skills by volunteering.
I worked in the shop from late April to early August. I learned many things from it and I’m sure they will be useful in the future.

Friends play an important part in our life. And although we think it’s natural and normal to have friends, we often don’t have a clear understanding of how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a very few. For example, the average(平均)number of friends among students is about 6. In a friendly relationship, two people like each other and enjoy being together, but whether they are close friends depends on more things like age, economic condition, social position, and intelligence(智力). Although they are not the most important, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a big difference among them.
Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have attitudes and interests in common. They often talk about “being on the same wavelength(波长)”. It usually takes time to reach this point. People want to help friends and hate to break a promise. This helps them involve intimately(紧密)with one another.

In the summer of 2015, Christian Moyer was just another teenager busy preparing for the SAT when he was faced with a question he couldn’t answer. It had nothing to do with reading, writing or math. However, it was all about life.
“We were looking at this part about the college writing, and one of the ideas was telling about a difficult situation we have had in life and how we overcame it.” said Christian, now a 17-year-old student at University City High School. “And I realized how lucky I was not to have any problems in life.”
The answer to the question came through loud and clear. The idea for what to do next came from “Barefoot Sunday”, a church event that asks members to wear new or gently used shoes to a service and leave them behind. The shoes are then donated to charities that help people start over—people who are homeless and poor. Christian decided to start collecting shoes for the San Diego Rescue Mission, one of the ‘‘Barefoot Sunday” 55 charities.
Then Christian got a tour to the downtown, there he saw some people would wear the same pair of shoes until there were no bottoms or tops on them. Christian was so kind-hearted that he thought what he did for the people would make a big difference.
Christian started collecting shoes last fall. He asked his friends, neighbors and family members for donations. His family members even help him put a box in front of their house for easy drop-off. He also posted a note on an online social network. Since starting his shoe drive, Christian has collected 160 pairs. Donating and collecting the shoes have given him the kind of feel-good, payback.
“Most people are pretty happy to give,” Christian said. “It’s nice because it makes them realize how many shoes they have that they don’t wear, and it probably makes them feel as good as it makes me feel.”
