Bertie knew there was something in the wind. His mother had been sad in recent days, not sick, just
strangely sad. The lion had just lain down beside him, his head warm on Bertie’s feet, when Father
cleared his throat and began, “You’ll soon be eight, Bertie. A boy needs a proper education. We’ve found
the right place for you, a school near Salisbury in England.”
His heart filled with a terrible fear, all Bertie could think of was his white lion. “But the lion,” he
cried, “What about the lion ”
“I’m afraid there’s something else I have to tell you,” his father said. Looking across at Bertie’s
mother, he took a deep breath. Then he told Bertie he had met a circus owner from France, who was
over in Africa looking for lions to buy. He would come to their farm in a few days.
“No! You can’t send him to a circus!” said Bertie. “He’ll be shut up behind bars. I promised him
he never would be. And they will come to see him and laugh at him. He’d rather die. Any animal would!”
But as he looked across the table at them, he knew their minds were quite made up.
Bertie felt completely betrayed. He waited until he heard his father’s deep breathing next door.
With his white lion at his heels, he crept downstairs in his pyjamas, took down his father’s rifle from
the rack and stepped out into the night. He ran and ran till his legs could run no more. As the sun came
up over the grassland, he climbed to the top of a hill and sat down, his arms round the lion’s neck. The
time had come. “Be wild now,” he whispered. “You’ve got to be wild. Don’t ever come home. All my
life I’ll think of you, I promise I will.” He buried his head in the lion’s neck. Then, Bertie clambered
down off the hill and walked away.
When he looked back, the lion was still sitting there watching him; but then he stood up, yawned,
stretched, and sprang down after him. Bertie shouted at him, but he kept coming. He threw sticks. He
threw stones. Nothing worked.
There was only one thing left to do. Tears filling his eyes and his mouth, he lifted the rifle to his
shoulder and fired over the lion’s head.

A. kill the lion out of helplessness B. protect himself from being chased
C. threaten the lion back to the wild D. show his anger towards his father
27. The passage intends to show that _________.
A. circuses are the last places for animals to live
B. animals belonging to the wild should be set free
C. parents are sometimes cruel to their children

On the edge of the Atlantic, there is much more water on islands. Experts say the Uists (尤伊斯特
群岛) in the UK, known as the “long isles” as they stretch for 100 miles, are on the front line of climate
change and some of those who call this home are already adapting to their changing landscape. Donald
MacPhee, an islander told BBC, “We seem to be getting a lot more rain—very unpredictable, but back
in my father’s days you could guarantee that you’d have plenty of dry weather in August. But now it’s
very unpredictable.” This low-lying watery landscape is weak to changes in our climate—with
predictions that the sea level here could rise by as much as half a meter over the next few decades.
And that’s not the only challenge facing these islands which are so exposed to wet and stormy
weather. Professor Stewart Angus, a coastal ecologist said, “A lot of the land actually lies below the
level of the sea for much of the tidal cycle. Secondly, you have rising sea levels. Thirdly, you have rising
rainfall in winter. Thus you have the great difficulty in a very low-lying environment of removing that
water. In fact, the rising sea level alone has the potential to raise water levels within the islands by
progressively reducing the effectiveness of an ageing drainage network.”
The airport here provides a lifeline service to islanders. A million pounds has been spent on the
latest work to protect the runway, which ends just meters from the shore. At the islands’ arts center, a
picture of a rising line is shown. Andy Mackinnon, an artist told us, “So, the line represents a symbolic
level that the sea will rise to. I hope that it does make people think about what we’re doing.”
And from the children here, out of taking care of their local beach, messages in English and Gaelic
(盖尔语) of their hopes and fears are being sent to the UN climate summit in Glasgow. “Stop sea levels
rising. We could be under the water soon.” These small islands hope for big commitments from world
leaders to lessen the worst that climate change might bring.
28. What does the first paragraph imply
A. The Uists have been under the sea water.
B. The weather here now is still predictable.
C. The islands are at risk due to climate change.
D. The sea level will rise by 0.5 meter in decades.
29. What is the big challenge for islanders now according to Paragraph 2
A. Wet and hot weather. B. The irregular tidal cycle.
C. Protecting the runway. D. Getting rid of the water.
30. What is Andy Mackinnon’s attitude towards the islands
A. Concerned. B. Indifferent. C. Neutral. D. Relieved.
31. What might be talked about in the paragraph following the text
A. What action the UK government will take.
B. What help the UN can provide for islanders.
C. What relief supplies children here will receive.
D. What other effects climate change may bring.

Scientists have an unlikely new helper while exploring the Earth’s crust (地壳) deep beneath the
ocean: Fin whales. New research, published Thursday in Science, finds these Fin whale calls’ sound
waves can help create images of the seafloor down to 2. 5 kilometers.
Seafloor imaging, which is important for studying things like earthquake mechanics and carbon
storage capacity, usually uses large air guns that send waves of sound downwards. The sound waves go
through the crust and bounce back to instruments on the seafloor, carrying information about the
structures they travel through. But such surveys are expensive, and the guns’ explosive noise may
interrupt sea creatures that use sound to communicate.
Vaclav Kuna, the study co-author, was studying earthquakes when he noticed strange readings on
the seafloor seismic(地震的) instruments, which turned out to match the frequencies of fin whale calls.
Whale songs often appear in such instruments’ records, says Emily Roland, a marine seismologist at
the University of Washington. Seismologists usually see these signals as annoyance. Kuna, however,
noticed that the signals were not coming directly from the whales, but were echoes bouncing back from
within the crust.
This technique does have limitations, Kuna says. Fin whale songs are limited in frequency,
meaning the subsurface images are not as clear as those made with air guns. Additionally, a relatively
flat seafloor is needed to triangulate(作三角测量) the whales’ positions while multiple stations would
be needed in uneven or mountainous regions, he says.
Nevertheless, these whales are found almost everywhere except the ice-covered areas of the Arctic.
The whale calls’ wide existence means they could provide new insight into old seismic datasets, Roland
says. “At least the whale songs can serve as an additional source of signals. They are free and they are
always there,” Kuna says. “It’s a win-win.”
32. What do we know about seafloor imaging in Paragraph 2
A. It may affect some sea animals. B. It can help predict earthquakes.
C. It is not completely accurate. D. It is environmentally-friendly.
33. What can we infer about fin whale calls
A. They can help scientists to locate their habitats.
B. They are easy to record and measure in the ocean.
C. They are likely to be used for seafloor imaging.
D. They have different frequencies among fin whales.
34. What is the potential use of fin whale songs
A. Exchanging messages between whales.
B. Working as an extra source of signals.
C. Providing useful insights into whales.
D. Exploring the ice-covered areas of the Arctic.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Fin Whale Calls Reveal Structure beneath Ocean Floor
B. Fin Whales Communicate by Singing Special Songs
C. Fin Whale Protection Is a Win-win Move for All
D. Seafloor Imaging Helps to Locate More Resources

Sports day! These two words can inspire both joy and fear in the hearts of students
everywhere. 36 And it’s also the chance to bag a prize or two. For others, it might feel
like having to take part in something they aren’t good at.
Today, more and more schools have recognized the importance of exercise. Many of them
have “non-competitive” sports days. They hope that by making sports days less competitive,
children of all abilities will be encouraged to take part without fear of losing. Exercise and
fitness is important for everyone, no matter how good at sport you are. 37
However, some people feel that it’s important that sport has winners and that learning to
lose is just as important as learning how to win. 38 Particularly, on a sports day when
you have a chance to really prove yourself !
39 According to a 2017 survey by Families Online, 82% of parents say they prefer
“traditional” competitive sports days. Many adults feel that children can learn valuable lessons
in both winning and losing. It’s also an opportunity for some children to show off their physical
and sporting skills.
People have different ideas about whether it is the winning or the taking part that counts
when it comes to school sports days. 40 We want to know your ideas.
A. What’s the point if no one wins
B. Should sport just be about winning
C. For many, sports day can be a great day of fun.
D. So, should School Sports Day be competitive or not
E. Everyone should be celebrated for trying and playing their part.
F. There are lots of people who agree with the idea — parents in particular!
G. Many parents are worried that their kids can get injured when doing sports.

第一节 任务型阅读 (满分 20 分)
阅读下面的短文,请根据各部分要求作答。
On a Friday evening in December, two weeks before Christmas, I lost my job. I hadn’t seen it
coming. I was excited for the weekend, when my daughter, Kristil, then 12, and I planned to get our
Christmas tree. Then I listened to my voicemail. “We’re sorry, madame, but your work assignment has
ended as of today.” My heart sank.
My paycheck was what our survival relied on. I did everything I could to give Kristil a good life,
but there were some things my love couldn’t fix. The next day as we searched for our tree, I struggled
to be cheerful as I eyed the Christmas tree prices. Kristil noticed I was worried and I told her I had lost
my job. She wanted to give me the $100 that Grandma gave her, but I refused.
Monday morning, I dropped Kristil at school and set off on my money-making pursuits. I headed
to the pawnshop (当铺) with a gold ring my mother had given me, and they gave me $70. Next was the
antiques store. I sold six Precious Moments statuettes for $150. I ended the day $220 richer.
Over the next week, I furiously (猛烈地) applied for jobs as my bank account grew smaller. I felt
as if the world was closing in on me. On a weekend afternoon, I dropped Kristil in a wealthy gated
community for a birthday party. I drove home defeated.
Back at home, I glanced out the window. It had been snowing all morning. I noticed a small woman
struggling to open her car door against the wind. As she got out, I realized it was my old professor,
Sister Esther. I hadn’t seen her since we’d met for lunch three months ago. I’d first met Sister Esther 10
years earlier, when I was her student at Edgewood College. After I graduated, Sister Esther kept in touch,
meeting me for lunch every few months. I had grown to love her like family. I rushed to the front of my
building. “What are you doing out in this weather ” I asked as we hugged.
Sister Esther said she called my office and knew I wasn’t working there anymore, so she came to
see me. Upon arriving, she told me urgently, “Hearing the news that you were fired from the work, I
felt greatly worried.” While saying, she handed me a Christmas card and an unexpected gift.
