（一）比较等级的构成
新课标英语中形容词有三个等级，即原级（形容词原形），比较级和最高级。比较级和最高级的形式是在原级基础上进行词形的适当变化而成。
单音节和少部分双音节形容词的比较级是在形容词词尾加-er，它们的最高级是在形容词词尾加-est。在变化时有如下几个规律：
绝大部分形容词，是在形容词词尾加-er， ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )-est。如：tall→班taller→ tallest, long→ longer→ longest, small→ smaller→ smallest, old→ older→oldest。
如果形容词词尾是以不发音的元音字母e 结尾的 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )，则只需在形容词词尾加字母-r, -st。如：fine→ finer→ finest, nice→ nicer→ nicest。

有些特殊不规则的形容词比较级和最高级，只能特殊记忆。中学英语中主要要求

形容词的最高级的运用
最高级常用在三者或三者以上之间，表示“ ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )最……”，使用时常在形容词最高级前加定冠词the，句子末尾常用in（表示在某一时间，空间范围内的比较，即常说的地点前）或of（表示比较范围的名词或代词与句中主语是同一类人或事物，并将主语包括在内时，即通常所说的人文范围前）表示比较的范围。 如：Unit Two is the most difficult of all in 8A. 在8A所有单元中，第二单元最难。
