Analysis of teaching material What: The material includes a picture of a room with many things like a pen, a jacket, an orange, a map,etc in it. And there are a boy and a girl who make a dialogue as shown later. --What’s this in English --It’s a jacket. --What’s that in English --It’s an orange. Why: This material is set to make students learn some new words and the way of how to ask things that are unknown. It helps students to cultivate the skill of making conversations of asking unknown things and answering. How: The material sets a situation in a bedroom where has many different kinds of things, and a boy and a girl make a conversation of asking things that they don’t know, and the other one answer the question. In the conversation, they use this or that to describe the distance between the things and themselves; and the usage of a/an is also a language point they made that the students need to pay attention to.
Teaching objectives By the end of the session, most students will be able to Review some old words and command some new words. (learning and understanding) Understand the dialogue between the boy and girl. (learning and understanding) Learn and understand the sentence structure “What’s this/that in English It’s a/an...” . (applying and practicing) Use the sentence structure “What’s this/that in English It’s a/an...” and promote the ability of pair-work and spoken English. (transferring and creating) This will be achieved by: Reviewing old words like ruler, pen and map; Teaching students new words such as quilt, jacket. Teaching procedure Teaching Object1: Review some old words and command some new words (learning and understanding) Activity1: Play the game “Who has good eyes”. The teacher shows the students the covered things and let them guess the words with the sentence structure “ What’s this/that in English It’s a/an...”. Than, show them the answers and read the words whether old or new 2 times and tell them the Chinese meaning. Justification:This step not only arouse students’ interests but also give them a glimpse to the new words and sentence structure that will learned.(Perception and attention, acquisition and combing) Teaching Object2: Understand the dialogue between the boy and girl (learning and understanding) Activity1:Let the students look at the picture on PPT and answer the questions 1.Where are they 2.What are they talking about Guess. Activity2:Listen the dialogue to check the guessing and let them tick the thing they heard. Activity3:Listen the dialogue again and write down the missing words. Activity4:Check the answers and emphasize the spelling of the words. Justification:Let the students do some predictions can promote the efficiency of listening process; help them get the main idea of the dialogue; the listening procedure can exercise students’ listening ability, information-grasping ability and words spelling. (applying and practicing) Activity1:Ask the students to think “ Why does the boy use ‘this’ in his question while the girl use ‘that’ ”. Activity2:Let the students look at the picture and discuss with their partners to find the answers. Activity3: Give them the hints and help them to make a summary of the use of “this” or “that”. Justification: Lead the students to think, discuss and understand the key sentence structure; foreshadow the usage of the sentence structure in next procedure.(Description and interpretation, internalization and application) Teaching Object4: Use the sentence structure “What’s this/that in English It’s a/an...” and promote the ability of pair-work and spoken English. (transferring and creating) Activity1: Pair work. Ask the students to look at the picture on the PPT, than work in pairs to make a dialogue using the sentence structures given on the PPT. Activity3:Review the new words and sentence structure again. Finish the exercises on the task sheet. Justification: Lead the students to use the new sentence structure in a new situation to cultivate the ability to solve problems by using the language and knowledge learned. Reflection In this listening and speaking class, based on comprehensive and in-depth discourse study, the teacher designed a logical, operable and detectable teaching goal that reflects the theme. And set up a series of activities according to the teaching objectives. The teacher designed many activities according to the teaching objectives and create a situation to let the students feel the language point. The teacher first set a game called “Guess what is it” to arouse students’ interests and give them a glimpse to the new words and sentence structure they will learn in this class; then, the teacher give them the picture, in other words, a situation, to let them make predictions through progressive questions, form where are they to what are they doing. On this basis, let the students listen to the type to get the main idea and detailed information. Thus, students not only get the information, but also learn the language point as well as the answers. The teacher focus on the language outputing, applying, practicing, transferring and creating. In teaching, the teacher pay attention to the skills training of listening and speaking ability. For example, giving them the situation and letting them make predictions; trying to grasp the key information. What’s more, the teacher in the end make a new situation and let the students work in pairs to create a new conversation. These help to a better use and formation in new language learning. In all, this lesson make the students cultivate the ability of language, obey the teaching principals and achieve the teaching objectives successfully, and what’s more, highlight the teaching concept of student-centered.
