With the development of the television and the Internet, many people have changed their hobbies and the way they enjoy their spare time. ①Because of the television and the Internet, many people spend less time reading. The aim of this article is to give reasons why people should read just for pleasure. The reasons that I give you are quite simple: to improve your knowledge, to have more fun, to make your imagination fly, to find new ways to express your ideas, and to have a better understanding of life.
Firstly, you can improve your knowledge when you read. There are all kinds of good books to choose from. People who read more usually have a better idea at life than those who do not read often.
Secondly, you can have fun and increase your imagination by reading books. Children have very good imagination, so parents need to read lots of stories that feed their imagination. Adults should try to develop their imagination by reading books that make them think amazing things.
Finally, no matter how old you are, it can help you have a better understanding of life and express your ideas to others in a simple and correct way.
②所以我建议你多读。I know that many of us like to play on the Internet when we are free, but we could also not forget to read books. Try to choose good books at the beginning and then I’m sure that you will never stop reading.

Last year my class went on a skiing trip to the mountains. We had already been to the same place many times and it always had been a fantastic experience each time.
When we arrived there, it snowed heavily. And there were terrible storms. While we were having breakfast the next day, everyone in the hotel told us not to go skiing because of the bad weather. But we decided to go anyway because we thought we were quite familiar (熟悉的) with the mountains.
When we got to the mountain top, it started snowing again. The hotel gave us some sandwiches to take with when we left, so we ate them while we were waiting for the weather to improve. But it didn’t get fine and soon we were really scared. Luckily, I put my cell phone in my bag before leaving the hotel. I called the emergency services (紧急服务). And they sent a helicopter (直升机) to save us. When we got to the hotel safely, all of us were tired and hungry.
What a disaster! Next time we will listen to others’ advice and not take any risks. What’s more, I’m going to a warm island next year!

Chinese snowboarder Su Yiming, at just 18 years old, is already pretty famous in China because of his excellent performance at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
Su made history for China by winning the men’s snowboard slopestyle silver medal and the men’s snowboard big air gold medal at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Su won the first place with 89.5 points in his first round and 93 points in the second round of the final.
Su started to practice snowboarding when he was 4 years old because his parents both love snowboarding. His first snowboard came from his father and it was a lot taller than Su. However, Su almost fell in love with the sport at once. Su used to be a child film star. But 7 years ago when China won the right to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, he realized this could be a life-changing chance. So, Su decided to focus on snowboarding.
“I only have one word to describe my feelings for snowboarding: it’s love, deep from my heart,” Su said. “It’s my happiest moment when I stand on the snowboard. No matter how long I train, even for 7 or 8 hours in a row, I feel happy. Love is what has been supporting me all the time. Practicing as hard as possible is also very important, too. So I want to tell teenage snow boarders to go after their love. I hope my story could encourage more young people to take part in winter sports and face challenges in their lives.

Hongcun (宏村), with a history of about 900 years, is an extremely beautiful village in Anhui Province. Located under Mount Huang, the village has kept the major Chinese styles from ancient times. It’s also one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (世界文化遗产).
Walk along the old stone streets and lanes, and you will feel like travelling back in time. All the houses with grey roofs and white walls were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. On the front gate of each household is dotted with (点缀着) red Chinese knots and lanterns. All of them are outlined (映出轮廓) against the blue sky and reflected into the clear rivers, lakes and ponds, surrounded (环绕着) by dark green mountains. It’s a living water-ink picture.
Step into a tea house to take a rest. A piece of classical music, played by guqin, fills up the house and floats into your hearts, as if you hear birds singing, pines (松) whistling and rivers flowing. You will be lost in a world, full of peace and pleasure. Holding the tea cup, you will find some lines of poems on its out layer (层) coming into your sight:
No dust is rising on the road, wet with morning rain.
The willows by the hotel look so fresh and green.
Walk out of the tea house, and go to the open-air theatre. The actors with coloured make-ups (脸绘) are performing on the stage in special clothes. It’s a local opera called Huangmei Opera and different from others such as Kun Opera, Beijing Opera and Yue Opera. Also, you can enjoy various (多样的) quyi: crosstalk, kouji and pingshu.

Poverty (贫困) is a big problem around the world. But China has found its own way to fight poverty. Instead of just giving money to poor people, it has tried to educate people and give them the tools they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Common people and good partnerships (合作) play a big role. President Xi Jinping honored role models in the fight. Here are two of them.
Born in Heilongjiang Province, Zhang Guimei traveled to Yunnan when she was 17. She has been helping girls get education for more than 40 years. As a teacher, Zhang was sad when she saw her students quit school (辍学). Many of them couldn’t go to college because their families couldn’t afford it. So in 2008, Zhang started a free school for poor girls. Since then, Zhang has been busy asking for donations (捐赠) to provide money for the school. She has convinced (劝说) parents to send their daughters back to school. The school has sent more than 1,800 students to universities and colleges.
In 1997, Mao Xianglin started to work as the Party secretary of his village. Around the village are 1,000-meter-tall cliffs (悬崖), and there was only one pathway (小路) out of the village for many years. It took villagers three days to walk to the nearest town. Mao decided to build a road. He led more than 100 villagers to build the road with their hands. It took them seven years to build an eight-kilometer road. But their work has improved people’s lives. It now takes just one hour to drive to the nearest town. Mao then encouraged the villagers to grow oranges. Last year, their orange yield (产量) was nearly 40 tons. By the end of 2019, 269 villagers had been lifted out of poverty.

I’m here today to share a good lesson with you. It is a true story about a student who studied in Germany.
After years of hard work, this student graduated with amazing achievements. Everyone was sure that he was going to get a good job easily and have a bright future. But to his surprise, he was not even given the chance for an interview! The third time he was refused, he couldn’t help telephoning the company to ask why they didn’t want him. The answer was simple. “We don’t offer jobs to dishonest people in Germany.”
What was wrong, you might wonder The truth is, shortly after he arrived in Germany, this clever student found that it was easy to skip (逃票) buying subway tickets in this country. So in order to save money, he often went in the subway without a ticket. As a result, he had been caught without a ticket many times.
From this story, we learn that we may get short-term benefits in dishonest ways, but the truth will come out sooner or later and the cost is high. So remember: honesty is the best rule.

Some people might think that young people are too young to know what they want. But people like Lu Kaigang prove (证明) them all wrong.
Lu, 23, a fashion model from China, grew up walking the roads in rural (偏远的) Guangxi. Now, he walks on some of the largest fashion catwalks (T台) in the world.
He found his passion young. “I have had a supermodel dream since I was 10. I saw a fashion show on TV and I felt it was so cool to do that on the runway,” Lu said.
Although Lu didn’t have much money or any professional training, that didn’t stop him from running after his dream. Lu collected pieces of cloth from the factory he worked at and made them into clothes. In 2018, he started making videos of himself wearing his handmade clothes and posted them online.
Lu has what money can’t buy: determination (决心) and self-belief. “The early videos I posted didn’t get many ‘likes’,” Lu said. “But I believed what I was doing would be known by the world someday.”
Lu quit his job at the factory and went back to his hometown to spend time learning how to be a supermodel. He also began to use other materials for outfits, like plastic bags and even buckets and kept posting videos of himself online.
About one year later, Lu’s hard work paid off and he became an online star. His heart was filled with excitement and happiness. He’s not just a common model. His one-of-a-kind clothes show off his talent and creativity, and his videos are mostly filmed on village dirt roads, adding a special and fresh backdrop (背景).
We can be sure that if Lu hadn’t followed his heart at a young age, he wouldn’t be where he is today.

In China there are around 130 different languages in different cities and lots of dialects (方言). These dialects come from about eight different language groups. Each group is quite different. For example, a Mandarin( 普通话) speaker in northern China would probably understand very little Cantonese (粤语).
Dialects are necessary parts of history. Sheng Guangqi, a teacher at Shandong University, says, “We can learn about the history of a place by looking at its dialect.” For example, in Shanxi, there are still many people who call matches “qu deng”, which means “get a light”. In the old days, “qu deng” was a piece of small wood with some powder on it. People used it to make fire.
Sheng thinks that dialects are also important for us to know about the culture. They are as important as Mandarin. “Mandarin is useful in many formal (正式的) situations. But in some art performances, such as local operas and short plays, dialects play an important role.” he said.
Although it is necessary to protect dialects, Zhang Haoming, an expert from the Ministry of Education, said making Mandarin popular is still the most important thing.
“We will further promote (推广) Mandarin. At the same time, we will also protect disappearing languages and the cultural meaning behind these languages,” he said.
