Alan and the other campers sat around the fire chewing meat chops. It would be Alan’s first night in a tent, and he was excited but a little nervous.
As they ate, the conservation officer spoke. “Much of the wildlife in this area comes out only at night. So after supper, let’s start a night watch. Volunteers will take turns to stay down here by the fire, away from the tents. Those who take part will get a chance to see a world that many of you never knew existed.”
Alan’s stomach tightened. Then he heard the officer continue, “There are no dangerous animals this close to Cape Town. Any volunteers ”
A tough-looking kid with red hair muttered something about needing a good night’s sleep. Another boy spoke up. “I’ll take a shift.” The kid who’d sat next to Alan on the bus volunteered. Alan sat tight. Then one of the girls raised her hand with a giggle. Alan frowned. If a girl could do it, he could, too. He volunteered.
A few more kids raised their hands, and then the officer explained, “This is how it works. When the rest of you go to bed in a tent, the first watcher takes his or her place by the fire. The duty of watcher is to keep the fire going gently. After thirty minutes, he or she wakes the next person.”
Alan heard his voice asking, “Are you sure it’s absolutely safe ”
The officer looked at him. “The danger is minimal. We wouldn’t have taken you here otherwise. Do you still want to volunteer ” Alan nodded but felt uneasy.
Earlier that day, the officer had challenged the campers to spot animal tracks along the river. That was fun. But being alone in the dark was not. Alan’s flashlight was already fading to a dim glow because he had used it too often. Looking around, Alan thought he saw a large bird swooping (俯冲) and wondered if it was an owl. He had seen small paw prints in the sand by the river. Was the owl hunting for the creature that had made them

“Judy, hurry up! Let’s go to the beach!” That was a familiar morning call from my older brother, Sirin. Hearing that, I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey. Raised by our grandparents in Savanna, we experienced our happiest moments there. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees, crystal-like ocean, and clear blue sky, Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature’s wonders. When we grew tired, leisurely walking on the soft, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of peaceful joy. The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood with us.
Three years later we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents. Occupied with our study, we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient. Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. In addition to seafood, we could order anything our hearts desired, no matter how late it was. What we loved most was the convenience of not needing to wash the dishes after eating, as they were all disposable, designed for single use.
However, deep within us, we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life. We were told by our grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So, when the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived this year, we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise. After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles, we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our cherished memories.

Emily finished playing the music, and then bowed to the animal toys on her bed. “There, three times in a row with no mistakes,” she said, “I just hope I can play it that well at the concert.” In just an hour she would be playing her first solo, and the thought was giving her butterflies.
“You’re lucky you don’t have to play by yourself in front of everybody,” she said, smoothing Lea the Tiger’s fur, and gazed down at the smiling face of Zoey the Zebra. Emily scolded, “You’re a big help. How can you be so happy at a time like this ”
She looked around the room at the bear, lion, monkey, and other animal toys that lined her bed and shelves. “I wish you could all come with me,” she sighed. She gave them one last glance and went to join her parents in the car.
“Do I have to play in the concert ” asked Emily as she climbed into the back seat. “Is my favorite first-grader getting nervous ” her dad asked, smiling. Emily didn’t answer. She was trying to picture what it would be like to play in front of all those people. “You’ll do fine, honey.” He added. “The first time is always the hardest.”
When they arrived at the concert hall, Emily handed her violin to her teacher, Mrs Allen, for tuning and tiptoed over to where the curtains parted. Looking out, she could see that all the seats were filled, with many more people standing in back.
Nervously she took her violin and sat with the other students onstage. She held her breath as the curtains started to open and Mrs Allen picked up the microphone to begin the program. One by one the students played their pieces. Finally, Emily heard her name announced. Her heart pounded as she walked toward the front of the stage.

第二节(分25)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I love to play the piano and I greatly enjoy performing my songs, so when the annual winter recital was canceled, I was disappointed. I had looked forward to it for a long time and had already prepared two of my best songs.
My mom had a wonderful idea, however, to turn this disappointing letdown into something worthwhile. “You can perform your songs at Carriage House Senior Living,” my mom suggested brightly. “I’m sure the seniors there who do not have families visit them that often, would really appreciate the music and you could play more than just two songs.”
I immediately thought this was a great idea. One of the things I did not like about the recitals was that I was limited to playing just a couple of songs. Playing the piano at Carriage House seemed like a win-win situation because not only would I get to play more songs, but I would also have the chance to cheer up the residents there with some lively tunes.
My mom called Carriage House and made arrangements for me to perform. In the coming days, I worked especially hard to polish up fifteen pieces that I thought the crowd would enjoy, including many old classics.
When the much-anticipated day finally arrived, my family and I drove to Carriage House. Walking through the enormous double doors, we stepped into an entryway that overlooked the spacious grand dining room. Right at the entrance to the dining room stood the piano as if it were just waiting to make some music to liven the place up a bit. At nearly every table several gray-haired women or men were seated enjoying their dinner and the company that the crowded room provided. Despite the conversations going on at various tables though, isolation hung like a dark cloud in the room.
Almost immediately, we were greeted by an old woman with a walker who introduced herself as Phyllis in charge of Carriage House. She welcomed me and led me to the stage.

In the Game
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” My daughter, Lauren, whooped, skipping into the room. “There are only eleven girls in Verden, and everybody makes the team.”
High-school sports is the biggest thing that happens in Verden, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball teams — Lady Tiger. But I was. My wife and I never told Lauren that she was disabled. We didn’t want her to feel different from other children. She has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征).
What if the other girls on the team failed to accept her What if Lauren spent most of her time on the bench What if she got injured during the game What should I say to the coach
The next afternoon, I parked by the basketball court.
“Hey, Johnny,” Coach Forthythe called. “We’re glad Lauren came out for the team.”
“Well, Mr. Forthythe, you know we don’t expect you to play her in a game. just include her when you can.”
The game arrived the next Sunday. I settled into a seat on the second row with my wife. Moments later, a train of girls chugged out of the locker room. Last in line was Lauren. I stood along with the crowd and clapped. She searched the stands. spotted us and waved broadly.
The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind. I gazed at Lauren, the most excited on the team. She slapped (拍打) her knee when the opponents scored. Her arms moved around in the air each time Verden shot. Even though she wasn’t playing, she looked as if she were having the time of her life. Now, I felt admiration for my daughter. Her team was getting beat, yet she still enjoyed the action.
Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by 17 points. Coach called a time-out. Then boomed the announcer’s voice, “Number thirty-three, Lauren, in for the Lady Tigers.”

答案:
2023届辽宁省葫芦岛市高三一模英语试题
【答案】
Hearing a noise, Alan froze, feeling something was there in the darkness. A ripple of fear crept up on him as he cast a glance there. Heart beating wildly, Alan made his way to the noise, with both of his legs trembling uncontrollably. A closer look convinced him that it was only a rabbit, which quickly disappeared in the dark. In relief, he felt the gentle breeze rubbing his face. The moon shedding its silver light on the woods, Alan was greeted by the sound of birds and insects. Enveloped by fragrant air, he felt as if in the wonderland.
The next morning, the officer asked for reports. Other campers bragged about their adventure in the dark—how they ran into some “horrible” creatures and bravely scared them off. The officer, wearing a doubtful look, offered no comments. When it was Alan’s turn, he told the truth that there were no scary animals but breathtaking scenery to be explored. A smile blossomed on the officer’s face. That was exactly what the camping was all about. Only after one overcame the fear in his own heart could he embrace the real beauty of nature.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
However, what we saw shocked us. Plastic bags and single-use containers littered the beaches, and we could hardly see any undersea creature in the once crystal-clear sea. To make matters worse, the water was dark and difficult to see through. Because of the unpleasant smell, we had to cover our noses. With tears blurring our vision, we desperately wondered what had happened to our beloved village. Looking at our anxious faces, Grandfather sighed with his head bowed. It was those visitors who did help us earn more money, but they also brought massive amounts of rubbish, which caused severe pollution and changed our beautiful village completely. While telling us about the changes, Grandfather gazed at the sea, his eyes filled with disappointment and helplessness.
Paragraph 2:
Hearing Grandfather’s words, we couldn’t wait to do something to tackle the pollution. Without hesitation, Sirin and I took off our shoes and walked near the sea to collect the rubbish with our bare hands. Seeing what we were doing, our family and some villagers joined us in our efforts. Some villagers fetched helpful tools, like sticks and nets, which were quite useful in catching the waste. I also pulled out my mobile phone and took photos of the rubbish floating on the surface of the sea. By posting those images on social media, I hoped more people could be aware of the pollution and lend a helping hand too. Much to our relief, our joint efforts made a difference. The seaside became clean once more, and the breeze from the sea smelled fresh and sweet again.

【答案】One possible version:
She put her violin under her chin, but she couldn’t remember even her first note. With a flush of sadness, she couldn’t hold back her tears welling up in her eyes. She shut her eyes, hoping to blink the tears away. When she opened them again, everything seemed misty. To her surprise, it looked as if all the people in the hall had changed into her doll animals, and she even saw her smiling Zoey the Zebra standing at the back. It was almost like being at home with her lovely friends. More relaxed, she picked up her confidence and remembered her piece.
As she played, the “animals” audience seemed to be changing back into people. But Emily was no longer nervous because all the audience looked friendly now. She also found her parents’ smiling eyes focused on her, telling her “you’re always the best”. The audience lost themselves in her music. Finally, she played the last note, put her violin under her arm and took a big bow. The music lingered in the air after the performance, while the entire audience broke into loud applause. She made it! She had played her first solo!

【答案】As I sat down on the bench, I pressed a key on the piano and was surprised to hear no sound. Feeling as if the whole world was watching me, I was struck dead with embarrassment. How could I perform the song without the piano I was on pins and needles when Phyllis slowly made her way to the front of the crowd of dinners and announced in a comforting tone, “This girl has come to sing for us but the piano seems to be a little nervous.” Almost immediately, there was scattered applause and several people stepped forward to help me plug in the piano and set the microphone. With everything ready, I took a deep breath and commenced my performance.
Nervousness melted away and I started to enjoy the performance with the old. One woman got up and began to animatedly dance about the room. Some of the people swayed in their chairs to the beat of the music while others tapped theirs toes. The performance ended up with a storm of applause from the crowd. I realized that it was far better than a piano recital because almost everyone seemed to truly appreciate my music and I’ m proud that I have the power to spread kindness to them. It ended up being a blessing in disguise that the recital was canceled, leading to me sharing the gift of music with those who needed it most.

My wife took hold of my hand tightly and I knew she felt the same as I. The game restarted and Lauren kept pace with the others fairly well. Then something happened. They passed Lauren the ball. She caught it and dribbled toward the goal. Amazingly, the opposing team did not block her. She shot. She scored! Applause exploded. Lauren gave her teammates five, held her arms high and rushed to us to share her joy.
