Adam Sandler, born in Brooklyn, New York, is an American comedian, actor, musician and film producer. When he was six, his family moved to Manchester, New Hampshire, where he attended Manchester Central High School. There he first performed at a stand-up comedy club at age 17. Following high school, Sandler found he was a natural comic and developed his talent while at New York University by performing regularly in clubs and on campus.
Later in his career, he would often draw on his earliest memories for material for his comedy and movies. In the movie Click, Sandler goes to Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in New Hampshire, where he went to a summer camp.
Early in his career, Sandler performed in comedy clubs, taking the stage at his brother's encouragement when he was only 17. He was discovered by comedian Dennis Miller, who caught Sandler's act in Los Angeles. Miller introduced him to Saturday Night Live (SNL) producer Lorne Michaels. Sandler was employed as a scriptwriter for SNL in 1990 and became a player the following year, making a name by performing amusing original songs on the show. He left the show in 1995 to focus on his film career.
Sandler's first starring role was in 1989, in the film Going Overboard. Although his earlier films did not receive praise, his more recent films, beginning with Punch-Drunk Love (2002), have received almost universally positive reviews. Audiences have remained faithful to Sandler's humor. Sandler starred in Bedtime Stories (2008), a film directed by Bringing Down the House director Adam Shank man, about a stressed man whose bedtime stories he reads to his niece and nephew begin to come true, which marked Sandler's first family film.

Harriet and Chris Martin, 75 and 76 from Bournville, Birmingham have reduced their carbon footprint by making changes in their home and their habits. Harriet is a retired teacher; Chris used to work in manufacturing and at a local university.
"I feel guilty about what people of my generation have done. I don't want to leave behind a damaged world for my four grandchildren," says Harriet. The couple learned all about energy efficiency when they were involved with retrofitting(翻新) a local building. Then, in 2009, they downsized their family home to the one with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of just E.
"We chose a house where we could make as big an improvement as possible," explains Chris. "Fortunately, we were able to work on the house for six months before moving in." They fixed solar thermal panels(太阳能加热板) on the roof, which provide nearly all their hot water from April to September and pre-warm their water for the rest of the year. They also put ten solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in the garden which produce as much electricity as they use. "After all our improvements, I calculate that our home's carbon emissions have been reduced by about 85 percent," says Chris.
While they're understandably proud of what they've achieved, Harriet makes the point that carbon dioxide emissions from heating and electricity make up only a small part of the average UK carbon footprint. Food, all the things we buy, and our travel choices are equally important causes. Raising animals to eat requires large amounts of land, food and energy. The Martins are already vegetarians and changing over to a vegan diet.
They also cut down on what they buy new. They mend their clothes, and try to get things from charity shops, online sites or borrow from a neighbour. They rarely use their car and walk or take the bus instead. They avoid flying and have travelled by train to places. "Educating ourselves and changing our lifestyle have been an enjoyable challenge," reflects Harriet. "The main point," adds Chris, "is that we don't want to be personally responsible for depleting the world of resources."
8. What inspired the couple to save energy
A. The government's requirement.
B. The extreme climate change.
C. The improvement of a building.
D. The wrong behavior of their generation.
9. What could be said about the solar thermal panels
A. They generate electricity.
B. They heat water all year round.
C. They are fixed against the wall.
D. They provide nearly half a year's hot water.
10. What do the couple want to express in paragraph 4
A. Man should lower the quality of life to save energy.
B. We should have a goal to reduce our carbon footprint.
C. Man can't reduce carbon dioxide emissions too much.
D. We should make full use of natural resources in our life.
11. What does the underlined word "depleting" in the last paragraph mean

Singapore's tradition of eating out in places called hawker centres is now recognized by the United Nations for its cultural importance.
A hawker is a person who sells food or goods and advertises by shouting at people walking by on the street. Hawkers are an important part of Singaporean culture. Open-air eating areas where hawkers sell their goods are very popular. Famous chefs, such as Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay have praised them.
On Wednesday, a specialized agency of the United Nations, UNESCO, added the city's "hawker culture" to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Singapore sought to have hawker culture added to the list about two years ago. Now that it has been recognized, Singapore must provide a report every six years for UNESCO. The report must show efforts the city-state has made to save and support its hawker culture. "These centres serve as 'community dining rooms', where people from diverse backgrounds gather and share the experience of dining over breakfast, lunch and dinner," UNESCO said.
In the 1970s, Singapore cleaned up its streets so the city moved street hawkers to new eating centres. These areas were part of an effort to improve the island. Now, the centres offer many different low-cost meals to local people and provide a pleasing social setting. The 2018 film Crazy Rich Asians showed its stars enjoying meals at a famous night market. Some sellers even received Michelin stars from a famous restaurant rating system for their meals costing only a few dollars.
But, now the average age of the hawker in Singapore is 60 years old. Younger Singaporeans now want to work in offices. They are less interested in working in small restaurants. The COVID-19 pandemic(流行病) health crisis also hurt sales, preventing foreign visitors and locals from eating out.
12. What do we know about hawkers from paragraph 2
A. They are native Singaporeans.
B. They sell goods in the open air.
C. They like posting advertisements on the street.
D. They have good relationships with famous chefs.
13. Why is the film Crazy Rich Asians mentioned

A. The difficulties faced by hawker culture.

C. The future of hawker culture.
D. The average age of hawkers.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Hawkers support cultural diversity in Singapore

Some speaking activities do not give an exact picture of your true language skill. But storytelling does. (1) It can be a short piece of invented story; or it can be the retelling of a news event. Or you can talk about something that happened in your own life. Storytelling frees your mind from forming complex ideas and lets you speak more easily in English. On the other hand, an activity requiring your opinion can slow you down. (2)
For the storytelling activity, try to provide as much information as possible and aim for a recording of three minutes or fewer. Don't just say, "I studied at the library." Say, " (3) And most of the seats were taken, so I looked around and finally found a place, but it was near the window. It was cold, so I had to keep my coat on," or something like that.
(4) Instead, it is to speak at a faster speed because you do not have to stop and think of each idea separately. Before the activity, you'd better speak out loud to yourself a few times to make sure you have your main points in mind.
When listening to the recording, do not expect to find all or even most grammar or vocabulary mistakes. (5) After the first recording, record yourself telling the same story at least once more and take note of your progress. But avoid memorizing your speech.
A. Storytelling is the retelling of a story.
B. Put your speech into written or typed form.
C. The goal of giving such information is not to fill the time.

F. Choose a place that you know well, like your home or a nearby bus station.

When I was seven, I found a watch while walking down the hallway of my school. The watch was expensive-looking, set with gold. As I picked it up, greed (贪婪) suddenly came over me, and instead of turning it in to the office like I should have, I became the owner of the watch.
When I got home from school, I found Mom cooking dinner in the kitchen. Thinking that she would be impressed, I held out my prize for her to see with a feeling of excitement and pride. Mom, however, was far from impressed. Instead, she was angry at her son for keeping the watch instead of turning it in. Mom then ordered me to go straight back to school and take the watch to someone at the office. I started to argue, but after taking a good look at the expression on Mom's face, I realized that would get me nowhere. There was nothing left for me to do but obey.
I have to admit, I was rather angry with Mom for making me give up the watch. I felt that it was justly mine since I was the one who had found it. Yes, I knew she was right, but greed had forced me to keep the watch, and now pride wouldn't allow me to admit that I had done something wrong. But time passed, and I forgot all about the lesson that I learned from the watch until fourteen years later.
While I was attending college, I had managed to get a job at a Walmart pushing carts off the parking lot. One morning, I found a checkbook (支票簿) that had been left in a shopping cart. Quickly, I took it to the customer service desk and gave it to the employee there so that the customer who had lost it could pick it up.

37.【答案】 Later, as I was outside pushing carts, a man came up to me. He told me his wife had left their checkbook in a shopping cart the night before, and he wondered if it had been found. When he told me his name, I realized that he was the owner of the checkbook I had found. I explained to him that I had found his checkbook that morning, and that he could go inside and get it at the service desk. The man was so thankful that he pulled out his wallet and offered me some cash, but I refused.
Then my thoughts went back to the day when Mom had made me return the watch. Mom wanted to make sure that her son would always be honest, and never take what didn't belong to him. Because of her, I did the right thing when I found that checkbook, and I was rewarded with a feeling of self-worth that no amount of money could buy. I have come to realize that while we are growing up, some valuable lessons are often the ones that we don't appreciate until later in life.
