Michael J. Fox became famous all over the world after starring as Marty McFly in Back to the Future in 1985. Six years later, aged 29, he developed Parkinson's disease. Since then, Fox—who is now 60 years old—has helped raise over $1.5 billion to help find a cure for the progressive nervous system disorder.
As a non-profit organization that provides money for Parkinson's research, The Michael J. Fox Foundation focuses on speeding up a cure for Parkinson's disease and improving treatments for those living with the condition—which influences about six million people worldwide. The Michael J. Recently Fox told of his hope that biomarkers will be the next big stop towards treating and perhaps even stopping the disease. "If we can find ways to discover the condition before it's obvious, if we could take a thin piece of hair and find it, then we could treat it preventively and then maybe you won't get it," he explained.

California researchers developed a glove with electronic sensors (传感器) that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone.
Previous systems that offered translation from ASL were limited by heavy designs or were uncomfortable to wear. Unlike previous systems, the new one is light, inexpensive and long-lasting, said Chen Jun, an assistant professor of bioengineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and the main researcher on the research.
"Our hope is that this opens up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them," said Chen. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device (设备), at the same time teaching a machine how to recognize them. The researchers also added sensors to tester's faces—in between their eyebrows and on one side of their mouths—to recognize facial expressions that are a part of ASL.
The system has thin sensors made from electrically conductive materials that run up each finger and turn the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a dollar-coin-sized circuit board (电路板) placed on the person's wrist, which then moves them over to a smartphone.
The system was able to recognize 660 hand movements and finger placements that stand for each letter in English, different phrases and each number. The system recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second. However, researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to be sold in stores.
8. How is the new system different from the previous ones according to Chen
A. It is less heavy. B. It is wearable.
C. It has a beautiful design. D. It can translate more phrases.
9. Who is more likely to use the new system
A. A deaf person who is reading an English novel
B. A Chinese student who is learning spoken English.
C. A deaf girl who is chatting with non-signers using ASL.
D. A non-English-speaker who is talking with English natives
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the system works. B. How reliable the system is.
C. What benefits the system has. D. What the system is made up of.
11. What will researchers need to do with the system in the future
A. Reduce its price. B. Change its appearance.
C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance.

A group of farmers in Nigeria are using a new method to grow crops from moisture (水汽) in the air. The method, known as aeroponics, does not use soil. Instead, plant roots hang in the air and take in nutrients from water mist. The method could make a big difference in places where huge amounts of land have been made unfarmable.
Biochemist Samson Ogbole is popularly known as Nigeria's smart farmer. He and his team are growing crops without soil at the technology-based farm they started three years ago in Abeokuta. Ogbole says they are working hard to end seasonal food shortage in Nigeria. It is just farming anytime during the year, meaning we can plant crops anytime during the year, and that we can harvest anytime during the year.
But setting up the aeroponics farm was not easy. It required more than $180,000. And some people in Abeokuta were very much against this nontraditional method of farming. It took a lot of effort to change people's minds about it. In fact, in Nigeria, about 30 million hectares of farmland is being used, instead of the 78.5 million hectares required for food security (保障). In the north, only 49 percent of the land is rich, a situation that worries traditional farmers. Aeroponics, however, does not require traditional farm work or much land. Nutrients (营养物) for the plants are controlled by a recycling system, greatly increasing productivity.
Dr. Phillip Ojo, Director-General of the National Agricultural Seeds Council, says the government welcomes the new farming method. Ojo notes that with aeroponics, farmers can quickly increase planting materials.
The agricultural industry represents about 40 percent of Nigeria's economy. The government wants to greatly increase this percentage. For now, most farmers lack the technical knowledge to increase productivity. They also need access to high-quality seeds to guarantee better harvests. Technologically skilled farmers like Samson Ogbole are offering a new way forward.
12. What do we know about the aeroponics
A. It helps crops draw nutrients from the soil.
B. It is the process of growing plants in water.
C. It is not affected by the seasons.
D. It is aimed at bringing back farmland.
13. What does "a situation" in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The overuse of the farmland.
B. The poor condition of the soil.
C. The traditional method of farming.
D. The high cost of the aeroponics farm.
14. What is Dr. Phillip Ojos attitude to the aeroponics
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Unbearable.
15. What is the main idea of the text
A. Nigeria's agricultural industry.
B. A new planting mode in Nigeria.
C. The popularity of the aeroponics farm.
D. The need of skilled farmers in Nigeria.

It was a beautiful sunny day, and Mary and I were playing in her new basement because it was so hot outside. The two of us were best friends, so we naturally did what best friends do-we did everything together. We went camping together, trusted each other and always stuck up for each other.
But that day, something changed. I'll never forget the look on Mary's face when she knocked over her mother's favorite vase that was on the table. The flowers and vase crashed to the floor, and the vase cracked into tons of tiny little pieces. I looked at Mary and said, "There's no way to fix this!"
Mary burst into tears. "What am I going to do What am I going to say " She looked at me while she wiped her tears and asked, "Can you say that you did it "
I was shocked. I didn't know what to do or say, and I started to pace back and forth. "Okay, I'll do it," I said.
That very second, her mother came downstairs to ask about the loud noise she had just heard.
Mary said, "Mom, we were sitting on the couch, and Michelle put her feet on the table and knocked over the vase."
Her mother looked at me and shook her head. "I don't know how many times I have to tell you girls that you shouldn't put your feet on the table.
I apologized to Mary's mother and told her I would buy her a new vase. She said there was nothing to worry about, but we should be more careful next time. I felt so bad. I knew that I had kept Mary out of trouble, but I felt that it wasn't right. I didn't go over to Mary's for a few days, and she didn't come to my house, either. I was busy cleaning and doing extra chores.

37.【答案】 Finally I earned enough money and set out to buy Mary's mother a new vase. I shopped around for a vase that looked like the one Mary had broken. Eventually, I found one. To get it over with, I went straight to Mary's house to give her mother the new vase. The moment Mary saw the vase. She burst into tears again. "Mom, I have to tell you the truth. I broke the vase, not Michelle." She confessed. "I asked her to take the blame for me." To our surprise, instead of critizing, Mary's mother softly talked about the importance of being honest.
Mary and I looked at each other with relief. Mary stepped forward and gave me a big hug, whispering sorry to me "Everything is OK". I comforted her with a big smile. Then Mary told us that she would do something to make things right. Later that day, Mary picked out some beautiful flowers for her mom's new vase and a pretty friendship bracelet or me and she paid for then herself with her allowance.
