Being highly successful in any field is pretty rare. It takes a combination of natural talent, luck, determination, and plenty of outside support for someone to make it big in sports, entertainment, or business. But what if competing is all that matters to you, whether you are likely to succeed or not This was the goal of Michael Edwards, better known as Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards, and his reaching that goal was an amazing achievement.
Born in the UK in 1963, Edwards was a passionate downhill skier whose dream was to compete for Britain in world-class competitions. He would have liked to represent his country in the 1984 Winter Olympics, but there were a large number of downhill competitors, and Edwards didn't qualify. Seeing his chance elsewhere, he switched to ski jumping. Ski jumping didn't cost as much as downhill skiing, and there was almost no competition for a place on the British team.
But a number of hurdles could have meant the end of Edwards' dream. He weighed more than most competitors. He had no financial support for his training. Poor eyesight meant that he had to wear glasses under his goggles—not a good thing when they steamed up at high altitudes. But he couldn't let any of these discourage him. He saw himself as a true lover of the sport who simply wanted the chance to compete. Winning wasn't the point. Having the opportunity to try was all he cared about. And nothing could stop him from trying.
In the end, Edwards took 55th place at the 1987 World Championships. He then went on to the 1988 Winter Olympics where he finished last. Many athletes would have been embarrassed about this result, but he is proud of his achievements to this day. His determination to fight against all the odds made him a global hero, and in 2016, the inspiring film Eddie the Eagle was made about his life.
4. Why did Michael Edwards choose ski jumping

B. Michael Edwards:Took Every Chance to Learn.
C. Competition Is All That Matters to Michael Edwards.
D. Nothing Can Stop Michael Edwards Seeking Success.

California researchers developed a glove with electronic (传感器) sensors that can translate American Sign Language (ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone.
Previous systems that offered translation from ASL were limited by heavy designs or were uncomfortable to wear. Unlike previous systems, the new one is light, inexpensive and long-lasting, said Chen Jun, an assistant professor of bioengineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and the main researcher on the research.
"Our hope is that this opens up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them," said Chen. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove—like device, at the same time teaching a machine how to recognize them. The researchers also added sensors to testers' faces—in between their eyebrows and on one side of their mouths—to recognize facial expressions that are a part of ASL.
The system has thin sensors made from electrically conductive materials that run up each finger and turn the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a dollar-coin-sized circuit board placed on the person's wrist, which then moves them over to a smartphone.
The system was able to recognize 660 hand movements and finger placements that stand for each letter in English, different phrases and each number. The system recognized the correct signs about 99% of the time, and in less than one second. However, researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to be sold in stores.
8. How is the new system different from the previous ones according to Chen
A. It is less heavy. B. It is wearable.
C. It has a beautiful design. D. It can translate more phrases.
9. Who is more likely to use the new system
A. A deaf person who is reading an English novel.
B. A Chinese student who is learning spoken English.
C. A deaf girl who is chatting with non-signers using ASL.
D. A non-English-speaker who is talking with English natives.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the system works. B. How dependable the system is.
C. What benefits the system has. D. What the system is made up of.
11. What will researchers need to do with the system in the future?
A. Reduce its price. B. Change its appearance.
C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance.
D
Trees in the cities are being robbed of sleep by street lights, according to a famous German scientist. Peter Wohlleben, author of The Hidden Life of Trees said that, like humans, "they also have to sleep at night". He compares trees in urban areas to orphans (孤儿) who have to grow without their network support, saying that light pollution makes city life even harder.
Mr. Wohlleben has studied trees and believes they raise their children, sweat, feel pain and communicate with each other. "Trees that live near street lights will die earlier because it's like a light burning in your bedroom," he said. "If you have any influence on street lights, you'd better turn them off at 1 o'clock or so." He developed the term "wood wide web" explaining how trees communicate and support one another. Mr. Wohlleben said roots had a hard time under pavements that were warmer at night when forests cooled down.
Researchers found artificial light changed the annual rhythm of blossoming and might have great effects on their health, survival and reproduction. Plants have grown well under 24-hour cycles of light and darkness, but the spread of artificial light disturbs these cycles. Light gives plants information about what time of day it is or whether they should be photosynthesizing (进行光合作用). If it's light all the time, they do not know when to carry out such activities.
In some cases the light is so bright that it affects their growth. Mr. Wohlleben also said that trees shed (落) their leaves in the autumn because snow falling on the leaves would cause the branches to break, causing them physical pain. The well-known author looks after the forest representing the community in Hummel, Germany, where machinery is banned and the trees are left alone.
12. Why does Mr. Wohlleben compare trees in urban areas to orphans?
A. They grow more slowly than trees in rural areas.
B. They suffer from environmental pollution.
C. They aren t supported by other trees.
D. They can t sleep day and night.
13. What should people do to protect the urban trees?
A. Turn off street lights at midnight.
B. Leave lights on in their bedrooms.
C. Cut off the roots under pavements.
D. Learn the communication style of trees.
14. How does the light harm trees?
A. It breaks the cycle of trees.
B. It slows down the photosynthesis.
C. It shortens the blossoming time of trees.
D. It prevents trees from communicating.
15. What does Mr. Wohlleben do in the forest of Hummel
A. He keeps the leaves from falling.
B. He cures the trees of physical pain.
C. He makes the branches break easily.
D. He stops people using machines there.

When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road. After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn't give up. One day, at a friend's party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted (编织的) sweater. It wasn't a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches (针法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself. She said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea. "Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes," she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweaters.
Lisa's friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. On the following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.

Take the Chinese scientist Tu Youyou for example. ①After examining thousands of Chinese medical texts and doing many experiments, Tu finally discovered artemisinin despite failing 190 times, which helped save millions of lives. ②There is no doubt that keeping trying plays an important role in Tu's success.
