When I was a teenager, I knew nothing about mental health. If you talked about "safe space", I'd think that you meant a bank. What's more, I didn't care about mental health. Why would I As Dad used to say, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it!"
But unfortunately my mental health did "break". I was diagnosed (诊断) as a seriously clinical anorexic (厌食症患者) at age 23. I had immediate treatment in hospital, which lasted two and a half years. People always wonder what helped me recover and the key was simple: comedy.
I'm a professional stand-up comic. Comedy began as my hobby and has progressed into a job. The word "comedy" is believed to come from the ancient Greek Komos meaning "to reveal", whose job is to reveal, explain and understand things. This was something I turned to when I was in recovery from anorexia. I'd never been able to explain what was going on inside my head. Trying to explain what's going on in your mind is like trying to explain a color to someone who's blind. So humour became a way of understanding things and then a way of explaining them.
Dr Dieter Declercq, Lecturer in Film and Media Studies at the University of Kent, believes "Humour can change our opinions in a difficult situation." However, he adds carefully that "We should avoid judgments like all humour is good for you." In his new book Satire, Comedy and Mental Health, he looks at how comedy can be used as a mental health method. He notes that, enjoyed with others, it is important for good mental health and recovery.
Stand-up comedy was important to my recovery. I know I'm not alone in that. So I want to pay that forward and show other people their mental health doesn't have to be "broken" before they can "fix it".
4. How did the author treat the issue of mental health as a teenager?
A. She learned a lot about it. B. She was confident of it.
C. She hated talking about it. D. She paid no attention to it.
5. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A. State the application of humour to her job.
B. Explain the role of comedy in helping herself.
C. Share the difficulty of going through the illness.
D. Show the reason for choosing comedy as a hobby.
6. What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Film. B. Comedy.
C. The new book. D. A difficult situation.
7. What can we infer about the author from the last paragraph?
A. She will give up being a stand-up comic.
B. She will improve her physical health as well.
C. She will introduce her experience to others.
D. She will help others test their mental health.

Harriet and Chris Martin,75 and 76 from Bournville, Birmingham have reduced their carbon footprint by making changes in their home and their habits. Harriet is a retired teacher; Chris used to work in manufacturing and at a local university.
"I feel guilty about what people of my generation have done. I don't want to leave behind a damaged world for my four grandchildren," says Harriet. The couple learned all about energy efficiency when they were involved with retrofitting (翻新) a local building. Then, in 2009, they downsized their family home to the one with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of just E.
"We chose a house where we could make as big an improvement as possible," explains Chris. "Fortunately, we were able to work on the house for six months before moving in." They fixed solar thermal panels (太阳能加热板)on the roof, which provide nearly all their hot water from April to September and pre-warm their water for the rest of the year. They also put ten solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in the garden which produce as much electricity as they use. "After all our improvements, I calculate that our home's carbon emissions have been reduced by about 85 percent," says Chris.
While they're understandably proud of what they've achieved, Harriet makes the point that carbon dioxide emissions from heating and electricity make up only a small part of the average UK carbon footprint. Food, all the things we buy, and our travel choices are equally important causes. Raising animals to eat requires large amounts of land, food and energy. The Martins are already vegetarians (素食者) and changing over to a vegan diet.
They also cut down on what they buy new. They mend their clothes, and try to get things from charity shops, online sites or borrow from a neighbour. They rarely use their car and walk or take the bus instead. They avoid flying and have travelled by train to places. "Educating ourselves and changing our lifestyle have been an enjoyable challenge," reflects Harriet. "The main point," adds Chris, "is that we don't want to be personally responsible for depleting the world of resources."
8. What inspired the couple to save energy?
A. The government s requirement.
B. The extreme climate change.
C. The improvement of a building.
D. The wrong behavior of their generation.
9. What could be said about the solar thermal panels?
A. They generate electricity.
B. They heat water all year round.
C. They are fixed against the wall.
D. They provide nearly half a year's hot water.
10. What do the couple want to express in paragraph 4?
A. Man should lower the quality of life to save energy.
B. We should have a goal to reduce our carbon footprint.
C. Man can't reduce carbon dioxide emissions too much.
D. We should make full use of natural resources in our life.
11. What does the underlined word "depleting" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Replacing. B. Developing. C. Sharing. D. Exhausting.
D
The International Space Station (ISS) was just three small rooms when the first crew moved in. The crew members soon discovered there was hardly any space for them to move around. The air was warm and humid, making them feel sticky.
Twenty years later, the space station is almost as large as a football field and has three modern laboratories. The station has enough solar power equipment to fill almost four-tenths of a hectare, and enough electrical wiring to stretch 13 kilometers.
The first crew—American Bill Shepherd and Russians Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko—left Earth on October 312,000. About 48 hours later, they opened the doors to the space station, holding hands in a sign of unity.
The three-man crew spent most of their time trying to get the equipment to work; heat from some of the devices made the living space too warm. Installing (安装) machines and making repairs took hours, compared to minutes on the ground, Krikalev remembered. "Each day seemed to have its own set of challenges," Shepherd said.
The space station did not come close to hitting any space objects during their nearly five months up there, Shepherd said, and the station has held up relatively well. Today NASA's top concern is the growing threat from space junk. This year, the space station has had to avoid objects three times. NASA and its partners say the space station easily has several years of usefulness left. Russia's Mir station operated for 15 years in the late 1980s and 1990s. America's 1970s Skylab spent much less time in space.
Shepherd said that the past 20 years of international experience and cooperation can help with enormous projects, like possibly sending humans to the planet Mars. "If you look at the space station program today, it's a blueprint on how to do it," Shepherd said.
12. Which of the following can best describe the ISS twenty years ago?
A. Small but highly used. B. Large but impractical.
C. Wet and a little cold. D. Crowded and uncomfortable.
13. What did the first crew mainly do at the ISS?
A. They operated the devices. B. They cleaned space junk.
C. They enlarged the space. D. They repaired the equipment.
14. What does NASA worry most about the ISS today?
A. There being more equipment failure.
B. There being doubts about its usefulness.
C. The risk of being struck by other objects.
D. The changes of the orbit three times a year.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. The contribution of the ISS.
B. The development of the ISS.
C. The problems troubling the ISS.
D. The uncertain future awaiting the ISS.

Gold and brown leaves crunched (嘎吱作响) under Mary's boots as she made her way down the sidewalk. She could not wait to be home. The chill (寒意) from the autumn winds was bad, but it was not nearly as hard to bear as the chill she felt in her heart.
She could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Each person in the group would speak for five minutes in front of the class. Today was Mary's turn. Her legs had trembled all the way to the front of the classroom. Her hands shook so badly that she could not read her notes. As Mary spoke, her voice had become softer, almost to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Mary's part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Mary to stay after class for a moment.
"Mary, I know you're shy, but you worked hard on this project. I'd hate to see you give up on yourself," Mr. Roberts suggested. "If I give you another chance tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage "
Mary nodded. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
Arriving home, she found Mom baking in the kitchen. When Mom baked, Mary always watched and chatted with her. Mom always said it was Mary's company that made her baked goods taste so sweet.
Mom studied Mary's face as she came into the kitchen. "What's wrong, Mary " She asked.
Tears shone in Mary's brown eyes. She told the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake.
"Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can't talk to your class " Mom asked, sliding the round cake pans into the oven. She set the timer and then said, "Let me show you something."

37.【答案】 Mary followed Mom to her bedroom. There was a case under the bed filled with Mom's old things. Mom dug around for a minute and pulled out a medal awarded by her school. She told Mary that when she was young, she was also too shy to give presentations in class. With the constant encouragement from her teacher, she did lots of practice and finally had the courage to come up to the front of the class. And she even won a medal in a speech competition.
The next day Mary again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. She could feel herself becoming nervous once more. However, as Mary faced the class, preparing to speak, she remembered her mom's medal and the story behind it. Mary took a deep breath and began to speak with confidence. Mary found her courage.
