At just 40 years old, hip-hop star Kasseem Dean, more popularly known as Swizz Beatz, has amassed (积累) nearly 70 million net worth that would inspire most of us to retire early. So why does Dean continue to both work extremely hard and also try projects that come with the risk of rejection
During our interview for Uncommon Drive, a video series for USA& Main that seeks to find out the motivations and magic of world-class business people, Dean provided a memorable answer: "You only have so much time—once it's gone you don't get it back. Don't focus on money; focus on building something greater than yourself. If you're not making history, you're wasting your time on Earth."
When you look at his answer, you will learn two important lessons. The first is in "making history". Doing so requires awareness. You must fully understand what has and has not been achieved in the market you've entered. Dean makes every effort with the goal of creating something important that has not been done before and will be remembered for its impact beyond his years.
The second part of his statement is just as powerful. In this interview, he never once said he is "trying" to make history. Instead, he has told himself that no matter what difficulty there is, it's just going to happen. "I'm going to make history," Dean said.
After talking to Dean for nearly 45 minutes, it was clear to me that he has removed all ego (自我) from a statement that might otherwise be misread as false pride. I believe it's a brilliant hack—rather than focus on all the reasons why a project can't be realized, he has convinced himself of the possibility.
4. What stimulates Dean to continue to work hard in spite of success
A. His desire to be a world-famous star.
B. His adventurous spirit and determination.
C. His life goal to make his mark on history.
D. His wish to get more wealth to help others.
5. What can we learn about Dean from the interview
A. He takes pride in his work.
B. He always believes in himself.
C. He often creates something special.
D. He gets well prepared for his career.
6. What's the author's attitude to Dean after the interview
A. Objective. B. Favourable. C. Doubtful. D. Grateful.
7. What's the best title for the text
A. How does Kasseem Dean face the rejection
B. Why doesn t Kasseem Dean want to retire
C. How does Kasseem Dean make history
D. What makes Kasseem Dean work hard
C
The development and testing of self-driving car technology has seen major progress in recent years. But engineers are working on other kinds of autonomous vehicles too—including some built for water.
Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been developing autonomous water vehicles called "Roboat". The word is a combination of "robot" and "boat". The project—which began in 2016—aims to create a group of boats to transport goods and people along the waterways of Amsterdam. The Dutch capital has been called "the most watery city in the world" because of its large network of canals (运河).
The engineers centred past efforts on autonomous boats designed to transport small goods. But the project's latest creation, the Roboat II, can also carry passengers. The electric-powered Roboat II has four propellers (螺旋桨) that permit it to move in any direction. It is equipped with a series of cameras and sensors to guide its movements. It also uses light lasers to map the environment and measure distances. The Roboat II measures two meters by one meter and weighs about 80 kilograms. The model can carry two passengers.
The MIT team is currently developing its third autonomous water vehicle. That boat is expected to be four meters long and is designed to carry up to six passengers.
The team says its autonomous system is designed to involve separate boats working together. For example, Roboat II vehicles can link up in larger groups guided by a leader boat, the researchers say. The follower boats can travel next to the leader boat, in front of it or in back of it. This ability can greatly increase the possibilities of autonomous water vehicles meant to transport goods.
The MIT team plans to use what it has learned from its first two Roboats to create a model of its biggest autonomous boat yet. The researchers will test that boat in Amsterdam, as well. After that, the team plans to start testing the vehicles in environments with "noisier waters", such as conditions found in the ocean.
8. What is the purpose of MIT's project
A. To help build a watery city.
B. To solve the traffic problems in Amsterdam.
C. To build self-driving water vehicles for delivery.
D. To make full use of the network of canals in cities.
9. What can we learn about the Roboat Ⅱ
A. It is guided by light lasers.
B. It is flexible in turning round.
C. It has already been used widely.
D. It can transport 6 people at a time.
10. What does "This ability" in paragraph 5 refer to
A. Connecting separate boats. B. Directing a leader boat.
C. Carrying goods and passengers. D. Making way for other boats.
11. What can we infer about the Roboats in the future
A. They are lighter. B. They are fully automatic.
C. They are more adaptable. D. They are environment-friendly.
D
Growing more food to feed the world will require more people to work in agriculture. According to the National FFA Organization, we need to produce as much food as possible in the next 40 years because of the growth in population.
Indiana remains pivotal to meeting this need. Indiana is one of the most productive U. S.states in producing tomatoes, corn, soybeans, ducks, chickens and eggs. At snack time, Indiana ranks second in making popcorn and ice cream.
The Indiana Business Research Center reports that agriculture contributes at least $ 25 billion to the state's economy, which creates more career (职业) opportunities for young people. "There are more than 300 careers in agriculture," said Joshua Bledsoe, the FFA advisor. "It starts with the farm in agricultural production, but then all the way to the plate there are tons of career opportunities once the product has left the farm. Therefore, we need folks who will understand processing and food science. We also need people in marketing and communications as well as folks in law."
Including skills in computer technology, Beck's Hybrids is the nation's largest family-owned seed company. Bruce Kettler, the former director of public relations for the company, explained that technology is important to the company's development. For example, computer technology on tractors allows farmers to follow the exact same pathway across the farm field throughout the season, from planting to harvesting and all steps in between.
Indiana is enjoying a harvest season, and even larger harvests will be needed to satisfy the world's increasing need for food. The amount of land used for farming has decreased (减少) by at least 25 percent since 1950. Therefore, growing more food will require more technology and more people. As Bledsoe put it, "You are going into the global workforce when you go into agriculture, and the opportunities are endless."
12. What does the underlined word "pivotal" mean
A. Uncertain. B. Important. C. Equal. D. Impossible.
13. What do Joshua Bledsoe's words mean in paragraph3
A. The farming needs to be improved.
B. Producing food is of great importance.
C. The young need more career opportunities.
D. Agriculture needs different kinds of talents.
14. What does Bruce Kettler think is necessary
A. Putting more money into agriculture.
B. Solving the problems facing agriculture.
C. Applying modern technology to agriculture.
D. Stopping the farming land from decreasing.
15. What does the author seem to express in the last paragraph
A. Working in agricultural field can be promising.
B. Advancing agricultural technology is difficult.
C. There is a good harvest in Indiana this year.
D. There is a great need for farming land.

When Lisa was little, she dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. It was always her dream. But it was not an easy road. After leaving college, Lisa went to Paris with her designs in order to make her dream come true. In Paris, she tried to talk to famous designers and show them some of her designs, but none of them showed any interest.
Though Lisa was discouraged, she didn't give up. One day, at a friend's party, she was introduced to a young lady who was dressed in a beautiful knitted (编织的) sweater. It wasn't a fancy color, but it did have very special stitches (针法). Lisa asked that lady if she knitted it herself. She said it was a work of a lady in Paris.
Lisa really loved the special stitches and wanted to include them in her designs. And then Lisa had an even braver idea."Why not own a fashion store of my own That way, I could design, make and sell my own clothes,"she thought. So she decided to begin with that kind of sweaters.
Lisa's friend introduced her to Madam Dean who knitted that sweater. The lady was from Armenia and she learned to knit that kind of sweater from people in her country.
Lisa drew a picture of a sweater and asked Madam Dean to knit the sweater for her. Madam Dean agreed. One week later, Lisa got the sweater. On the following day after Lisa received it, she wore it to a party in the fashion industry.
