Louise Gluck has been no stranger to awards over her long and storied career, since her first publication in 1968. In 1993, she won the Pulitzer Prize for her collection of poems, The Wild Iris. And in 2020 she became the 16th woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature with the Nobel Prizes first awarded in 1901.
Gluck was honored "for her unmistakable poetic voice that, with austere (朴素的) beauty, makes individual existence universal". Often said to be an autobiographical poet, drawing from the inner parts of her life, "she is not to be regarded as a confessional poet. Gluck seeks the universal," Nobel Committee Chair Anders Olsson said in a statement.
Gluck, 78, the author of 12 poetry collections, has been able to turn her life experiences into universal themes covering life, loss, and isolation. Because of this, readers have often found her poetry to be "dark". However, there is much more than darkness in her voice, as noted by Olsson. "It is straightforward and...also a voice full of humor and biting wit," he said.
For example, in her poem Snowdrops, she uses the coming of spring after winter to show rebirth of life after death. She leads readers down a depressing path only to reconnect to the light at the near end. At the conclusion of the poem, readers are left to feel the "raw wind of the new world" as they watch a new spring. This is often the case in Gluck's poetry, with readers being able to feel joy even after not having done so for a long time.
When her work Faithful and Virtuous Night received a National Book Award for Poetry in 2014, a judge for the award went on to say that the collection comes from "a world where darkness blurs (使变模糊) ordinarily sharp edges around the oppositions of our lives—loss and renewal, male and female, the living and the dead".
Although she's already a well-known writer, experienced in exploring trauma (痛苦经历) and healing, Gluck did feel honored to be given the Nobel Prize. However, when asked what the prize means to her, the lyric poet responded by saying, "It's too new...I don't know really what it means." Her only hope is that she can preserve her daily life.

California researchers developed a glove with electronic sensors that can translate American Sign Language(ASL) into English in real time through an app on your smartphone.
Previous systems that offered translation from ASL were limited by heavy designs or were uncomfortable to wear. Unlike previous systems, the new one is light, inexpensive and long-lasting, said Chen Jun, an assistant professor of bioengineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering and the main researcher on the research.
"Our hope is that this opens up an easy way for people who use sign language to communicate directly with non-signers without needing someone else to translate for them,"said Chen. The team worked with four people who are deaf and use ASL and had them repeat gestures up to 15 times while wearing the glove-like device, at the same time teaching a machine how to recognize them. The researchers also added sensors to testers' faces—in between their eyebrows and on one side of their mouths —to recognize facial expressions that are a part of ASL.
The system has thin sensors made from electrically conductive materials that run up each finger and turn the movements into signals. These signals are sent to a dollar-coin-sized circuit board placed on the person's wrist, which then moves them over to a smartphone.
The system was able to recognize 660 hand movements and finger placements that stand for each letter in English, different phrases and each number. The system recognized the correct signs about99% of the time, and in less than one second. However, researchers said the glove would need to learn more vocabulary and be able to translate signs faster in order to be sold in stores.
8. How is the new system different from the previous ones according to Chen
A. It is less heavy. B. It is wearable.
C. It has a beautiful design. D. It can translate more phrases.
9. Who is more likely to use the new system
A. A deaf person who is reading an English novel.
B. A Chinese student who is learning spoken English.
C. A deaf girl who is chatting with non-signers using ASL.
D. A non-English-speaker who is talking with English natives.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the system works. B. How reliable the system is.
C. What benefits the system has. D. What the system is made up of.
11. What will researchers need to do with the system in the future
A. Reduce its price. B. Change its appearance.
C. Extend its service life. D. Improve its performance.

Harriet and Chris Martin, 75 and 76 from Bournville, Birmingham have reduced their carbon footprint by making changes in their home and their habits. Harriet is a retired teacher; Chris used to work in manufacturing and at a local university.
"I feel guilty about what people of my generation have done. I don't want to leave behind a damaged world for my four grandchildren," says Harriet. The couple learned all about energy efficiency when they were involved with retrofitting (翻新) a local building. Then, in 2009, they downsized their family home to the one with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of just E.
"We chose a house where we could make as big an improvement as possible," explains Chris. "Fortunately, we were able to work on the house for six months before moving in." They fixed solar thermal panels (太阳能加热板) on the roof, which provide nearly all their hot water from April to September and pre-warm their water for the rest of the year. They also put ten solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in the garden which produce as much electricity as they use. "After all our improvements, I calculate that our home's carbon emissions have been reduced by about 85 percent," says Chris.
While they're understandably proud of what they've achieved, Harriet makes the point that carbon dioxide emissions from heating and electricity make up only a small part of the average UK carbon footprint. Food, all the things we buy, and our travel choices are equally important causes. Raising animals to eat requires large amounts of land, food and energy. The Martins are already vegetarians (素食者) and changing over to a vegan diet.
They also cut down on what they buy new. They mend their clothes, and try to get things from charity shops, online sites or borrow from a neighbour. They rarely use their car and walk or take the bus instead. They avoid flying and have travelled by train to places. "Educating ourselves and changing our lifestyle have been an enjoyable challenge," reflects Harriet. "The main point," adds Chris, "is that we don't want to be personally responsible for depleting the world of resources."
12. What inspired the couple to save energy
A. The government's requirement.
B. The extreme climate change.
C. The improvement of a building.
D. The wrong behavior of their generation.
13. What could be said about the solar thermal panels
A. They generate electricity.
B. They heat water all year round.
C. They are fixed against the wall.
D. They provide nearly half a year's hot water.
14. What do the couple want to express in paragraph 4
A. Man should lower the quality of life to save energy.
B. We should have a goal to reduce our carbon footprint.
C. Man can t reduce carbon dioxide emissions too much.
D. We should make full use of natural resources in our life.
15. What does the underlined word "depleting" in the last paragraph mean
A. Replacing. B. Developing. C. Sharing. D. Exhausting.

Gold and brown leaves crunched (嘎吱作响) under Mary's boots as she made her way down the sidewalk. She could not wait to be home. The chill (寒意) from the autumn winds was bad, but it was not nearly as hard to bear as the chill she felt in her heart.
She could not forget the way she had frozen in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations (陈述). Each person in the group would speak for five minutes in front of the class. Today was Mary's turn. Her legs had trembled all the way to the front of the classroom. Her hands shook so badly that she could not read her notes. As Mary spoke, her voice had become softer, almost to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Mary's part of the presentation even though she had clearly not finished. He had also asked Mary to stay after class for a moment.
"Mary, I know you' re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I'd hate to see you give up on yourself," Mr. Roberts suggested. "If I give you another chance tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage "
Mary nodded. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
Arriving home, she found Mom baking in the kitchen. When Mom baked, Mary always watched and chatted with her. Mom always said it was Mary's company that made her baked goods taste so sweet.
Mom studied Mary's face as she came into the kitchen. "What's wrong, Mary " She asked.
Tears shone in Mary's brown eyes. She told the whole story. Mom was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake.
"Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can't talk to your class " Mom asked, sliding the round cake pans into the oven. She set the timer and then said, "Let me show you something."
