Everyone “talks” wit ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )h their hands at least sometimes. Some people’s gestures match their messages well. Other people like to make very large gestures that can be confusing. And still others don’t use their hands much at all. No matter which camp you fall into, it’s important to pay attention to your hand gestures while you are communicating. And also remember, hand gestures can have cultural meanings.
A few years ago I was ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) a speaker at a meeting in Lisbon, Portugal. It was my first time in Portugal, and I became instantly fond of the special pastries (油酥糕点) that Lisbon is known for. One morning I went into a bakery and ordered two pastries. I did so by holding up two fingers. However, the salesman put three pastries in a box. I later learned that the gesture for two was raising the thumb and the forefinger. Even though my thumb wasn’t showing, the salesman thought I was signaling for three.
Many hand gestures ar ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )e not universal. Before speaking in a country or to a culture that you are not familiar with, do some research to find out which gestures in your presentation might be misunderstood, not understood at all, or rude.

Growing up in Engla ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )nd, Charles Darwin was a curious boy. He liked collecting beetles. He was persuaded by his father to study medicine, but did not finish his medical studies at Edinburgh, because he found it dull and could not stand the sight of blood. So he went to Cambridge University to study theology (神学), but here too there were more interesting pursuits than his studies.
While studying th ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )eology he became friends of Adam Sedgwick, a geologist (地质学家) and John Stevens Henslow, a naturalist. Henslow taught Darwin to observe nature and collect specimens (标本). Henslow also introduced Darwin to Captain Fitzroy and arranged for him to join the scientific voyage on the Royal Navy survey ship, HMS Beagle, as the ship’s naturalist.
The Beagle circle ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )d the globe studying geologic, meteorological (气象的) and oceanic information. During the 5 years they were at sea Darwin studied the animals, plants, land formations and fossils from the many areas the ship visited. During a 5-week period ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the Beagle visited the Galapagos Islands, where Darwin studied the plants and animals. By the time Darwin had left the islands a theory had developed. His observations brought him to conclude that plants and animals evolve (演变) over time in a process of natural selection. The species, to survive, would gradually change based on environmental conditions. Darwin spent the next 20 years of his life gathering supporting evidence and in 1859 he published On the Origin of Species.

People who are slight ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ly overweight have a lower risk of early death than people of normal weight, according to a new analysis (分析) of nearly 100 international studies. 21*cnjy*com
The studies, m ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ost done within the past decade, included about three million adults from around the world. The result of these studies shows that slightly overweight people were six percent less likely to die from all causes compared to people of normal weight. But the researchers found that seriously overweight people were still at a 30 percent greater risk of death compared to people of normal weight.
Study lead author K ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )atherine Flegal says she was not surprised that slightly overweight people would not have a higher death risk. “Because we’d in fact already read a lot of this literature (文献) and realized that death rates of slightly overweight people would be at least not higher than those of normal weight,” she said. “I guess I was a little bit surprised that it was lower. And I was also surprised that the lower rates of obesity didn’t seem to differ from normal weight.”
But Flegal stresses ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the difference in death rates appears to be small between people of normal weight and overweight and slightly overweight people.
The findings by Fleg ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )al and her coworkers have raised new questions about the reliability of the so-called “body mass index” or BMI, a measurement of body fat as a ratio (比率) of height to weight, which has become popular in recent years and is used by health experts to measure possible health risks.
But Heymsfield warns t ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )hat people should not conclude that it’s okay to put on extra kilograms, since being at a healthy weight lowers the risk of heart disease and diabetes.21·世纪*教育网
12. Katherine Flegal felt surprised at the fact that .
A. there are so many seriously overweight people
B. death rates have nothing to do with body weight
C. seriously overweight people have higher death rates
D. slightly overweight people have lower death rates
13. What can we learn from the last but one paragraph 21cnjy.com
A. The results of BMI may be not trustworthy.
B. BMI has been much questioned recently.
C. BMI tells nothing about possible health risks.2·1·c·n·j·y
D. The studies provide further evidence for BMI.
14. What can we conclude from the passage
A. The number of overweight people is increasing.
B. It doesn’t matter if you are slightly overweight. 21*cnjy*com
C. The result of the studies is confusing.
D. It’s all right to put on extra weight.
15. In which colum ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )n of a website does the passage most probably appear
A. Science. B. Dieting. C. Lifestyle. D. Health.
