Edited by Penny Ur
Elementary to Intermediate British English
Description
Suitable for cl ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )assroom use or self-study, Active Grammar presents and practices grammar in clear, realistic contexts specially chosen to appeal to teen and young adult learners. Engaging (有吸引力的) presentations help students learn about the words while they study English grammar, and a large number of contrasting (形成对比的) revision exercises help to develop students’ command of several grammar points at once and to prepare them for communication outside the classroom. Regular tip boxes give information about common mistakes and the accompanying CD-ROM contains additional exam-style exercises and tests for more grammar practice. A FREE comprehensive Teacher’s Guide, providing plenty of practical ideas on how to use the material in class and tips for teaching mixed ability and mixed age classes, is available online. 【版权所有:21教育】

Sometimes the story ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )behind an invention is even more interesting than the invention itself. Next time you make a phone call or send a text message, think of Alexander Graham Bell.
Bell invented the firs ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t telephone but he didn’t really mean to. He was much more interested in helping deaf people and trying to design something that would help them hear. As a boy, Bell did not seem like a future inventor; he devoted himself to nature, poetry and music. He even taught himself to play the piano with which he entertained his family.
When Bell was 12, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )he noticed his mother was becoming deaf. It was the concern for his mother’s deafness that led Bell to study sound and how it is made and communicated. Bell’s father, a famous writer, encouraged Bell’s interest in this field. Once Bell was taken by his father to see a demonstration of a very primitive kind of speaking robot invented by Sir Charles Wheatstone. Bell and one of his brothers made their own version of the robot and managed to make it talk—this happened while Bell was still a teenager.
The next few years ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )saw great changes in Bell’s life. The family moved from his birthplace in Edinburgh, Scotland, to Canada. Bell eventually continued his work with deaf people in Boston, Massachusetts where Bell decided to focus on experiments with sound machines. Bell hired Thomas Watson as his assistant, and in 1875 they invented the world’s first telephone. The quality of the sound was awful by today’s standards but Bell had designed something that would change the way we communicate forever.
Bell went on to make ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) many more inventions in various fields including an air conditioner and a very early type of plane. However, it is as the inventor of the telephone that Alexander Graham Bell will forever be remembered.

Owning a smartphone m ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )ay not be as smart as you think. A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, smartphones add as much as two hours to your working day.
Researchers found that ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) Britons (英国人) worked an additional 460 hours a year on average as they were able to respond to emails on their smartphones.
The study revealed tha ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )t the average UK working day was between 9 and 10 hours, but a further 2 hours were spent by workers to respond to or send work emails, or make work calls. More than 90 percent of the office workers surveyed had an email-enabled phone, with a third accessing (访问) their email accounts more than 20 times a day. Almost one in ten of them admitted that they spent up to three hours outside their normal working day to check work emails, and even those without a smartphone often checked emails on their home computers. Some workers confessed (承认) that they are on call (随叫随到) almost 24 hours a day. Nearly two-thirds of them said they often checked work emails just before they went to bed and as soon as they woke up.
Ghadi Hobeika, ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com ) the marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to keep in contact via social networks, take photos and videos as well as send emails has made smartphones invaluable for many people.
