Your home is your castle. You decide, possibly together with family members, what to make of it. Outside our home we have limited opportunities to improve the environment, but in our home we can do a lot.
At home we want to feel free, relax and do things that we like. We want to eat, sleep, exercise, maybe work, and meet with friends and family. We spend many hours at home. Naturally, we want our home to be as comfortable and healthy as possible.
What surroundings make you happy What things do you like to have around you Feeling good at home is a matter of physical as well as mental and social well-being. Look around you and think about what changes can be made in your home environment. Start with something small, one step at a time.
Make a small change every day. Why not try the following steps
1. Put away things that you don’t need. Too many things disturb the eyes and make them hard to relax. Only surround yourself with things that you need or things that will enrich your life.
2. Stick to a few colors — two or three — for each room, instead of mixing many different colors. This will help you create a calm and balanced atmosphere.
3. Make sure you have good ventilation (通风). Leave doors between rooms open for better air circulation (循环), and open windows when possible.
4. Don’t smoke in your home. Ask your visitors to smoke outside.
5. Make your kitchen table as pleasant as possible. When you sit down to eat you must be able to relax and enjoy your meal. Are there papers or magazines on the table Too many different colors Keep it simple and clean.
6. Make sure your sleeping place is comfortable and healthy. The pillow is important. Do you often wake up with a headache You might need a new pillow.

My fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who got the Alzheimer’s disease (老年痴呆症). Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.
In the past, Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures (透露) we were able to raise public awareness. We were happy that as a result many more people underwent testing. They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.
So now we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clear understanding of the individuals (个人) and families who are affected by it.
At the moment, I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life’s journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, as the Alzheimer’s disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden (负担). I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes, I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage. In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.
I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.
Thank you, my friends. May God always bless you.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

Nearing the end of our recent off-season beach vacation, we headed for the third hotel of our trip — the Quality Inn and Suites Oceanfront at 705 Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach.
We arrived more than an hour before check-in time, hoping we could get in early. And we were happy to learn that the friendly staff did have our room ready. We could unload the car right there and park the car in the garage.
The lobby (大厅) was decorated with original paintings. The only seating I noticed was a sofa close to the check-in desk, not much to keep waiting guests relaxed during the busy season. Just through the lobby, however, the outdoor pool had many lounge chairs, which seemed more than necessary for the size of the pool.
Other than typical signs of a decades-old building, the hotel was clean, and our room was obviously more spacious (宽敞的) than those where we had stayed on our trip. All the hotel’s rooms faced the ocean, but most of them overlooked (俯瞰) the pool and its neighboring bicycle rental stand. Each room had a refrigerator, a microwave, an iron, and a safe. In spite of a connecting door, the walls were thick enough that our neighbor in the connecting room did not hear my naughty kid crying.
Laverne’s Seafood Restaurant, connected to the hotel, advertised its seafood dinners, but a decade ago it was known among my fellow university students as the place to go for great desserts. The hotel staff told me that they still served great desserts, but we did not taste them this time. We did, however, take advantage of the breakfast included in our room rate and served in a side room at Laverne’s. The hotel also had a second restaurant, Chix Café and Sports Bar.
All in all, the Quality Inn and Suites Oceanfront is a good place for travelers who want an ocean view and a clean room without spending a lot of money.
44. What might be the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To advertise a restaurant.
B. To give his opinion of a hotel.
C. To tell the reader about his beach vacation.
D. To inform the reader of the latest design of a hotel.
45. According to the passage, who went on the trip with the author
A. The author’s parents. B. The author’s neighbor.
C. The author’s friends. D. The author’s child.
46. Why didn’t the author taste desserts at Laverne’s
A. Because the restaurant offered bad service.
B. Because the restaurant didn’t serve great desserts.
C. Because desserts were too expensive to order.
D. Because they could have breakfast without extra pay.

A man was walking on a mountain when he found an amazing cave. Stored inside were all kinds of treasure and precious stones. When he saw it, he concealed the cave entrance and stayed there, guarding it.
From that day on, the man hid all his valuables in the cave, and to avoid anyone suspecting he was rich, he gave up his job, his home, and his friends. He constantly watched the approaches to his cave, wanting no one to find out about it. Fearing thieves, he guarded the cave all night long.
He was so devoted to the cave that he hardly ate or drank. Before long, he fell ill. Many days passed, and he got thinner and sicker, losing all his strength. One day, when he could hardly move at all, he realized that it was his greed that had brought him to this extreme end. He understood that guarding his treasure had been of no use and no good. He decided to share it with others.
He crawled (爬) into the cave to fetch some jewels, but discovered that the cave was almost empty. All he could find was a small emerald (绿宝石). He took it and left the cave, intending to give it to the first person passing by. Soon a woman approached and accepted the emerald with great joy. The man said to her, “I could have given you many more riches, but I don’t know where they went. This is all I have now.”
“Are you sure there’s nothing else ” replied the woman. The man shook his head and pointed to the cave. He found that some riches were still there; he saw some gold coins. He said, “Take them with you.” The woman took both the emerald and the coins, and went away happily.
In a while, an old man passed by and asked the man what he was doing there. The man replied, “What bad luck! Just a moment ago I gave a woman the few riches left over from the treasure I was guarding.”
“Are you sure there’s nothing else ” The old man asked him.
The man showed him the cave, and they found a box filled with jewels and gold. The man was shocked. The old man explained to him, “At last! At last someone has freed himself from the spell (咒语) of this cave. You see, this is a magic cave, and you’re the first to pass its great test. Many people have devoted their lives to this cave, only to end up realizing there’s nothing here ...”
“And why does this happen ” said the man. “Why does the treasure appear and disappear ”
“My son, this magic cave has as many riches as does your own heart. When someone discovers it, the cave fills with the treasure they bring with them, but later, when they all devote themselves to guarding the treasure, their hearts begin emptying, and so does the cave. The only way to fill it is to fill your heart with all that is good, as you did by giving that last jewel to the woman. That’s the reason why the cave was filling up again ...”
And so, the man understood it was better to share than to keep things to himself. And, from that day, thanks to the cave and the old man, the man became ever more noble (高尚的) and generous.

四、任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
How will the way kids learn change over the next 10 years According to futurist expert Neil Selwyn from the Faculty of Education, Monash University, children’s memory will be able to be improved technologically. In the future, kids could take cognition (认知) drugs like vitamins in the morning to develop the brain and help with memory before exams. Besides the smart drugs, there will be a hard disk that a kid can attach externally (外部地) on his / her head to download information into. Also, the tactile feedback (触觉反馈) technology allows kids to learn by trial and error. For example, in schools, children could dissect (解剖) a digital frog to learn about biology.
The development of various educational technological products will have great effects on future schools. In 10 years there will be no textbooks in classes. Digital books will take the place of textbooks. Libraries will still exist to keep old books although few new ones will be purchased. Children will practise a new kind of artificial (人工的) intelligence like people used to learn Latin or Greek with the small, single-board computer. In addition, robots will be used as teachers in future schools, though teachers will remain the primary experts. For example, the realistic-looking Saya robot is used extensively in schools in Japan and South Korea and is an accepted part of their culture.
Moveable schools will appear, too. The futuristic, adventurous and flexible school features different parts that can be added on or taken off like Lego blocks (积木) depending on the school’s needs. The entire school can be set up or moved in a matter of weeks and less expensively than building and designing an entire new school. The idea is to make school more inspiring and a better environment for students to think more seriously and be more intelligent and respectful.
Personalized technology will also be used. As kids bring in their own tablets (平板电脑) and smart phones to the classroom, they will be able to get information more quickly and it will be more personalized for them as they will be familiar with applications they use at home too. In addition, virtual lessons will be given and they will be especially useful for rural pupils as broadband speeds and digital equipment improves. School hours will not be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. any more, and instead, kids will take lessons with an online tutor one day a week.

Last Tuesday was my mother’s birthday. I had been making an effort to look for a special present when it occurred to me that I could make a birthday card by myself.
So I began to collect the materials I needed: a card, a pencil, glue, string, color pens and a photo of my mother and me. The first step was to cut the photo into the shape of a heart and draw an outline of a heart on the card, which was equal to the heart-shaped photo. Then I spread the glue on the card to stick the photo in the heart-shaped area. After that, I stuck the string along the outline of the heart shape and colored it with color pens. With the best wishes written, I finished the birthday card.
Upon seeing this special present, my mother smiled happily, which made me very proud and satisfied. Not only can making a DIY present bring you more fun, but it is also environment-friendly.
