Are you looking to load up your e-reader with some new books to promote your career Well, look no further. Here are four best sellers for you!
The Boss of You by Lauren Bacon & Emira Mears
This book is a goldmine for women intending to start their own business. As a freelance writer(自由撰稿人) , I read it several times when I decided to begin a career. I've folded so many pages in this book, and found some sections especially helpful, like the ones on figuring out start-up costs, drawing up a budget, and the ways to market yourself.
Suggested by Steph Auteri
Baby Steps : The Path from Motherhood to Career by Diane Lang
I myself have used this book after having my first child. Ms. Lang gives several choices that have worked for women. At 62 pages, every word counts. For moms that are still weighing choices, this book will help them decide if indeed it is time to go back to work.
Suggested by Anne Newton
Minding Her Own Business by Jan Zobel
Taxes are the same for women as for men. Yet many women seem to have number anxiety that makes them feel they can't deal well with their money. As a tax expert, I've seen this among my clients over the years. This book is designed for one-person businesses. Read it, and you'll know what taxes to pay and what you needn't.
Suggested by Jan Zobel
The Relationship Edge in Business by Jerry Acuff
For most women, the biggest challenges in our lives are the relationships we build and develop with our family and friends. Jerry explains how we can use those same relationship-building skills to build good relationships with our customers and co-workers that will help our business to grow soundly.

Ever called a movie theatre to find out show time Or called a customer service centre for help Chances are you didn't speak to a human being. You probably gave commands to an Automated Speech Recognition (ASR) system. These types of systems are efficient money-saving tools that allow companies to address many customers, concerns with minimum human intervention.
The technology for such a system has advanced greatly since its appearance in the 1950s. One significant recent achievement is the launch of virtual personal assistants (VPAs) on mobile phones. The most well-known of these is Apple's iPhone VPA, Siri. If you tell Siri that you want to schedule lunch with a friend, "she" can set the appointment on your phone in seconds. The VPA can also hold a basic "conversation" with a sense of humour. However, it can only be set off when the human user speaks certain key phrases or words.
While the potential for communication between a human and a machine may seem exciting, this possibility concerns some people. Some experts worry about peopled attachment to these machines and fear that the art of successful human-to-human conversation will be undeveloped in younger generations. They worry that people won't be able to display the right emotion or tone in conversations because they haven't been practising those skills. Others fear that machines will take over the functions that were traditionally performed by humans, such as customer service.
Another concern often associated with the development of new technology is the invasion of privacy. When people use certain speech recognition applications, they leave behind an audio track of their speech. When you ask a VPA for directions, your speech is often sent to a remote server and saved for processing. This digital information may lead to data mining, or the collection of large quantities of personal data.
For now, however, the continuing evolution of ASR software is thrilling. Asking for and acquiring information from an automated source has never been easier. Leading companies in the speech recognition world will make human communication with machines as seamless as possible—in other words, just like communicating with another human.
1. What can we say about Apple's Siri

C
Technology offers conveniences such as opening the garage door from your car or changing the television station without touching the TV.
Now one American company is offering its employees a new convenience : a microchip implanted (植入) in their hands. Employees who have these chips can do all kinds of things just by waving their hands. Three Square Market is offering to implant microchips in all of their employees for free. Each chip costs $ 300 and Three Square Market will pay for the chip. Employees can volunteer to have the chips implanted in their hands. About 50 out of 80 employees have chosen to do so. The president of the company, his wife and their children are also getting chips implanted in their hands.
The chip is about the size of a grain of rice. Implanting the chip only takes about a second and is said to hurt only very briefly. The chips go under the skin between the thumb and the forefinger. With a chip in the hand, a person can enter the office building, buy food, sign into computers and more, simply by waving that hand near a scanner. The chips will be also used to identify employees. Employees who want the convenience, but do not want to have a microchip implanted under their skin, can wear a wristband(腕带) or a ring with a chip instead. They can perform the same tasks with a wave of their hands as if they had an implanted chip.
Three Square Market is the first company in the United States to offer to implant chips in its employees. Epicenter, a company in Sweden, has been implanting chips in its employees for a while.
Three Square Market says the chip cannot track the employees. The company says scanners can read the chips only when they are within a few inches of them. " The chips protect against identity theft, similar to credit cards. " The U. S. Food and Drug Administration agreed the chips back in 2004, so they should be safe for humans, according to the company.
In the future, people with the chips may be able to do more with them, even outside the office. Todd Westby is Chief Executive Officer of Three Square Market. He says, " Eventually, this technology will become standardized, allowing you to use this as your passport, public transit, all purchasing opportunities, etc."
1.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A.The replacement of the chips. B.The potential risks of implanting the chips.
C.The places to implant the chips. D.The advantages of the chips.
2.What does the underlined word "them" in Paragraph 5 refer to
A.The hands. B.The scanners. C.The employees. D.The credit cards.
3.What can we infer from the passage
A.The chips have magic powers.
B.The price of the chips is reasonable.
C.The chips are very popular among the employees.
D.Most people suspect the application of the chips.
4.Which of the following best describes Todd Westby's attitude towards the chips
A.Defensive. B.Disappointed. C.Casual. D.Optimistic.

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days, a brush was made from camel's hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some fur from the family cat to make a brush.
The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more fur. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin was forced to admit what he had been doing.
The cat's lot was about to improve. That year, one of Benjamin's cousins, Mr. Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed with Benjamin's drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes. He also sent six engravings(版画) by an artist. These were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes Benjamin had ever seen.
In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his gift. He asked Benjamin's parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.
In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began a landscape(风景) painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two classic books on painting to take home. The books were long and dull. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said, "Those two books were my companions by day, and under my pillow at night." While it is likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to classical paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
l. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 suggest
A. The cat would be closely watched.
B. The cat would get some medical care.
C. Benjamin would leave his home shortly.
D. Benjamin would have real brushes soon.
2. What did Pennington do to help Benjamin develop his talent
A. He took him to see painting exhibitions.
B. He provided him with painting materials.
C. He sent him to a school in Philadelphia.
D. He taught him how to make engravings.
3. Why were Williams' two books helpful to Benjamin
A. Because they helped him master the use of paints.
B. Because they helped him appreciate landscape paintings.
C. Because they helped him get to know other painters.
D. Because they helped him make up his mind to be a painter.
4. What is the text mainly about
A. Benjamin's visit to Philadelphia.
B. Williams' influence on Benjamin.
C. The beginning of Benjamin's life as an artist.
D. The friendship between Benjamin and Pennington.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
Last year at Christmas time, my wife, three children and I were on our way from Paris to Nice. Somehow everything went wrong. Our hotels were "tourist traps" and our rented car broke down. On Christmas Eve, when we checked into a dirty hotel in Nice, there was no Christmas spirit in our hearts.
It was raining and cold when we went out to eat. We found a small restaurant poorly decorated for the holiday. Only five tables in the restaurant were taken. There were two German couples, two French families, and an American sailor, by himself. They were eating in stony silence except the sailor. He was writing a letter, and a half-smile lit his face. In the comer a piano player was listlessly(无精打采地) playing Christmas music.
All of us were interrupted by an old French flower woman through the front door. She had a worn overcoat and her old shoes were wet. Carrying her basket of flowers, she went from one table to another. No one bought any. Exhausted and frustrated, she sat down at a table.
The sailor finished his meal and got up to leave. Putting on his coat, he walked over to the flower woman's table.
"Merry Christmas," he said, smiling and picking out a handful of flowers. "How much are they "
"Two francs, sir."
The sailor put a twenty franc note in the woman's hand.
"I don't have change, sir," she said. "I'll get some from the waiter."
"No, ma'am," said the sailor, leaning over and kissing the ancient cheek. "This is my Christmas present for you."
Paragraph 1:
Then the sailor headed for our table with the flowers in his hand. _______________________________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

第三部分 写作
第一节
答案:Dear Sir,
I am Li Hua, a Chinese student taking a summer course here in New York. Learning that a Chinese china exhibition will be held in the local museum, I am writing to apply to be a volunteer.
I apply for the position because I want to improve my personal abilities. I can speak fluent English as well as standard Chinese. Besides, I once learnt a lot about china and have been crazy about collecting cups made of china, which make me have the competence in introducing china's history and other relevant information. Young I and energetic, I'm keen on communicating with foreign friends. Thus, I'm convinced that I'm qualified for the job.
I would be grateful if my application could meet with your approval.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节
答案:Paragraph 1:
Then the sailor headed for our table with the flowers in his hand. He picked out a red flower and placed it on our table. "Merry Christmas!" he greeted us in a cheerful voice. Before we could say "Thank you", he went to other tables. In an instant, everyone in the room was presented with flowers, including the waiter and the piano player. In the bright light, the flowers were glowing in full bloom. These magical flowers melted our frustrated hearts and blew away all the unpleasant moods.
Paragraph 2:
The piano player came alive and pleasant music filled the whole room. A festival atmosphere drowned all of us. We merrily danced to the joyful music, singing, laughing and wishing each other good luck. The old flower woman also joined us, unable to conceal her excitement and gratitude. The spirit of Christmas came back to us again. It brought all of us together in this small restaurant on a foreign land. All this was due to a young American sailor, who, through his kindness and generosity, brightened our paths.
