Day 1 Dubai: A Luxurious City
Dubai is a city of big business. expensive hotels, skyscrapers, and shopping malls. In the early 20th century, Dubai was a successful trading port. People from the world stopped in Dubai to do business. But it was still a small city, and most people lived as fishermen and businessmen. Then in 1966, oil was discovered. This brought a lot of money into the area, and soon Dubai began to change.
Today Dubai is one of the world's most important business centers. ln fact, each year the city gets its money mainly from business, not oil.
Recently Dubai has attracted more and more visitors from abroad. They come to relax on its beaches, and every year, millions visit just to go shopping!
Dubai is also one of the world's fastest growing cities. Many tall buildings are built in months. The city also has many man-made islands. One of these, the Palm Jumeirah, is like a palm tree and is very beautiful.
The city is still an amazing mix of people from different countries. The people from 150 countries live and work in Dubai, and foreigners now outnumber Dubai natives by eight to one!
Many people welcome the city's growth. But an increasing number of Dubai natives worry about the speed of change. As a Dubai native says, "We must always remember where we came from. Our kids must know we worked very, very hard to get where we are now, and there's a lot more work to do."

Day 2 Study by Sitting on a Ball
Sitting on a chair all day in school can make anyone want to move around. So, more and more teachers are letting students have a ball. By sitting on exercise balls instead of chairs, teachers find students’ posture and attention improve.
Dottie Pownall, a fifth-grade teacher in West Virginia, USA has been using balls as chairs since December 2008. “The students love them”, she says. Pownall took a survey of her students. She found that 80% of the students thought sitting on the balls helped them pay more attention to what they were learning.
The teacher Pisa Witt, felt so strongly about the use of the balls as chairs, she started Witt Fitt. This company encourages the use of the balls. And the company educates not only teachers but also students on how to use them. “Our products are used in 24 states, three provinces in Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan." says Witt. “Research shows that sitting on the balls makes them sit up straighter. You can slouch on a ball," says Witt, “but it feels awful.” Because the students are moving their blood increases. That carries more oxygen to the brain so the kids have more energy and can focus longer.
“Furthermore(此外), they're fun." says Pownall.

Day 3 Working for Your Dream
Elena jogged with her dad in some empty lots at the edge of town. These out-of-the-way lots were good places to jog. But the lots were full of rocks and rubbish.
One day, Elena saw a sign on the lots. It said, “New City Park." Elena was excited. Maybe the park would have a jogging trail!
Elena told her parents about the sign.
“I read about the park in the newspaper,” said Elena's father“The city wants volunteers to help clean the area. Then the city will build a soccer field and a playground."
“Will they build a jogging trail ” Elena asked.
“No, the paper didn't mention a jogging trail.”
“Well, perhaps if I help clean up the lots, they'll put in a jogging trail." said Elena.
On Saturday Elena went to the lots. Many adults were working there. Some were picking up rubbish. Some were moving rocks
“I went to volunteer,” Elena told a man, "What can I do
"This is not a job for children" said the man."You'd better go home. Elena looked around. She could carry rubbish. She could move rocks. A lady was pulling a bag of rubbish. Elena saw a box of rubbish bags. She took an empty bag.
“I'll take this bag to the dumpster," said Elena."Here's a new bag.
“Thanks, " said the lady “Keep those new bags coming." Elena dragged rubbish bags. She told everyone she was glad to help build the park. She explained that she hoped the park would have a jogging trail.
Elena went to the area every week. Soon everyone knew her and she told everyone how wonderful a jogging trail would be.
Soon the volunteers cleared the lots. The city could start building. The mayor gave a speech. He showed a drawing of the new park. He told them about the soccer field and the baseball diamond. There would be picnic tables. There would be a playground. The park would even have basketball courts. There was no sign of a jogging trail.
The mayor thanked the volunteers. Then he asked if they had any suggestions. The volunteers said they wanted to build a jogging trail around the park.
They told the mayor how helpful Elena had been and how she wanted a jogging trail. The mayor said, “A jogging trail won't be hard to build. Let's do it!”
Everyone clapped and cheered. Elena cheered loudest of all.

Day 4 Small Acts of Kindness Spread Big Love
Chuck Wall teaches management and human relations at Bakersfield College. He walked into class one day and told his students that their homework was to perform one act of random kindness. His students did not understand the homework and didn't know what to do, but the professor would not answer their questions. He encouraged his students to work it out for themselves.
One week later, the students entered the classroom excited to share their stories. One student told of giving away blankets to the homeless. Another reported on helping a dog to find its owner and another student had been trying to find a long, lost friend Students were energized by the homework assignment and wanted other people to be kind too. With the support of local businesses, the students made stickers to put on cars that invited people to do something kind for others. They sold the stickers and decided to donate the money to a center for the blind-not surprising as Professor Wall is blind.
Since then, similar kindness activities have been started in schools around the world. Many schools organize a Random Acts of Kindness Week, around November 13th,to celebrate World Kindness Day Some schools use each day of Random Acts of Kindness Week to perform a different kind act, such as making a new friend, helping someone, doing community service, or raising money for a charity(慈善机构). Students learn to consider other people and think about how small actions can make the world a better place.

Day 5 Climbing the Ladder of Life
With a determined look on his face, Chicago's Michael McCarthy held on to the banister and climbed to the top of the Willis Tower not long ago. The Tower stands 1,451 feet(442 meters) tall, the highest building in the US.
As he got to the last step, McCarthy almost fell down, but that didn't stop him. The 14-year- old boy finally finished climbing the 2,109 steps and arrived at the top, where he enjoyed cheers from many people.
“I just want to show people that if a kid with no legs can do it, anyone can do it,” McCarthy said.
McCarthy, who was born without legs, has to wear prosthetic legs and use a stick to walk. But McCarthy has a strong heart. He believes having a disability shouldn't stop anyone from achieving his or her success.
He has been in a special school since he was four. When he decided to climb the Willis Tower, his teacher, Jeff Kohn, was moved by his determination and offered to help train him. They spent more than ten hours practicing climbing stairs and keeping balance with the prosthetics and sticks on the steps every day. “It seems that he never knows how difficult it is. Sometimes I was so tired that I asked him to rest for a day." said Kohn. “But he said he was still full of energy and wanted more exercise.
Kohn always walked with McCarthy for the climb.“I saw the last 10 floors, he went faster," said Kohn. “He's the most driven(有动力的) sportsman I've ever trained.”
McCarthy said he was proud of himself and that the tower now holds special meaning. “When I’m older, I'll point to the building and say 'Look at this building I climbed', he said.
