Here are some of the world’s most unusual events.
World Ice Golf Championship, Greenland
For more than 10 years the World Ice Golf Championship has been seen as the most extreme golf competition in the world. In 1997, architect Rolf Henning-Jensen was asked to design the world’s first ice golf course among huge iceberg and heavy snows of Uummannaq, a small town on the west coast of Greenland-600 km north of the Arctic Circle. There golfers face extreme temperatures as their first task to deal with. Then it will take players time and patience to accommodate themselves to white “green” and orange balls to play with. Determined by weather conditions, this event is scheduled for March each year in Greenland.
Balloon Fiesta, the United States
Have you ever been taken to the sky in a hot air balloon The yearly Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta gives you the chance to enjoy a bird’s-eye view of the city and countryside. Since 1972, perfect October weather, blue skies and wind known as the “Albuquerque box” have worked together to allow balloonists to control their way thanks to the direction of blowing winds. This is the only place in the world to enjoy balloons flying in the blue skies each October.
El Colacho, Spain
The world’s most dangerous festival takes place every year in a small Spanish village Castillo de Murcia near Burgous. El Colacho means the devil’s jump and in fact this is the act of baby-jumping. Its purpose is to force a devil to leave the child’s body. Men dressed as devils jump over small babies to guard them against illness and bad spirits. Many consider the festival to be dangerous as “jumping devils” could hurt babies. But locals believe the action protects their babies from bad things and organize the jump in the streets, so people can watch or even join.

David Rees runs a very distinctive business. He charges customers $15 to sharpen their pencils to perfection, using a variety of tools.
I know what you’re thinking—is this a joke The 39-year-old gets asked that question a lot. To clarify everything, he even created a special section on his website telling everyone he’s actually providing a real service.
You can supply your own pencil or you can have Rees sharpen one of his own favorite 2B pencils. After that, he mails it to you in a display tube with the shavings in a separate bag, and an authentic certificate which just happens to mention the pencil is so sharp as to be a dangerous object.
To achieve the desired result, the master sharpener uses all kinds of tools, including general sandpaper, pocket knives and even a special $ 450 sharpening machine. “It depends on what the customer wants to use his/her pencil for,” he says. That determines the most appropriate pencil-sharpening technique. Some customers buy pencils as inspirational symbols while others buy them because of their special memories of classic 2B pencils.
$15 to have a pencil sharpened is a bit expensive though, right You’re not the only one who feels that way, and David’s unique business has really angered lots of people, who talk of inequality in America, saying it is so insane for the wealthy to pay $15 to sharpen a pencil. But others will say, “This is just our urge to put an end to the welfare state because new ideas arise along with the business.”
David admits his trade is sort of unusual. But there are those who actually value his service, as is proven by the over 500 orders he has gotten.
24.How could David make money by sharpening pencils
A.He invented new tools for the job. B.He provided quality service for his customers.
C.He promoted his skill on his website. D.He saved lots of time for other people.
25.What can we infer from the words of David Rees in paragraph 4
A.He provides personalized services. B.He knows all kinds of pencil users.
C.He values ideas behind the pencils. D.He always writes in pencil.
26.What does the underlined word “insane” in Paragraph 5 mean
A.Deliberate. B.Rewarding. C.Unreasonable. D.Irresponsible.
27.What seems to be the author’s attitude to David Rees’ trade
A.It’s a waste of time and money. B.It needs further improvement.
C.It’s awfully expensive. D.It’s a fancy service.

The DNA of 6.7 million species could be stored inside the Moon in case there's a disaster that destroys life on the Earth. Scientists have a plan to create a “lunar ark”, which is like “Noah's Ark”, the ship in which Noah saved animals from a food, according to the Bible. The lunar ark would contain millions of samples of reproductive cells and seeds from all he 6.7 million known plant, animal and fungi species on the Earth. The researchers think the lunar ark could be put in the hollowed out lava tubes that exit on the Moon's surface. It is thought that these cave-like networks were created by lava billions of years ago. Robots would be sent inside the tubes to start building the ark.
When the ark is complete, scientists think it could be powered by solar panels on the surface so that all the samples inside can be kept at cryogenic temperatures without the risk of being rotten over decades, if not centuries. I will also ne things like an airlock and lighting for human visitors.
Researcher Jekan Thanga and a team of students from the University of Arizona in the US have mapped out the theory. They think it would take 250 rocket trip to the Moon to complete the lunar ark. “Earth is naturally likely to change suddenly,” Professor Thanga said, “It's safer to sore the samples on the Moon in case the Earth is destroyed.”
The lunar ark concept was presented by the researchers at the IEEE Aerospace Conference in early March. They listed super-volcanoes, asteroid impacts and climate change as reasons we might need to store samples of life in case we need to start again. Thanga said: “The environment and human civilization are both very fragile.” Not all of the technology needed to make the ark exists yet but the scientists think it could be made reality within the next 30 years.
28.Where will the lunar ark be placed on the Moon
A.On the ship created by Noah. B.In the cave-like networks made by robots.
C.On the panels powered by the Sun. D.In the empty lava tubes formed a long time ago.
29.What does the underlined word “cryogenic” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Mild. B.Mediate. C.Low. D.High.
30.What can we know from the text
A.Some problems are to be solved before the lunar ark is built.
B.150 rocket trips to the Moon will be needed to build the lunar ark.
C.The lunar ark can run well without energy.
D.The environment on the Earth is a steady as human civilization.
31.What is the best title for the text
A.A Lunar Ark Grown from Volcano Eruptions B.A Lunar Ark against Asteroid Impacts
C.A Lunar Ark for Life Preservation D.A Lander for Human's Lunar Exploration

If your friend says she feels relaxed, but you see that she closes her hands into fists, you may doubt her words. Robots, however, might believe her. Body language says a lot, but robots have great difficulty in observing tiny body movements and can miss important social signals as a result.
Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University developed a body-tracking system that might help solve this problem. The system called OpenPose can track body movement in real time. One important quality of the OpenPose system is that it can track not only a person's head, body, arms and legs but also his fingers. To do that, the researchers used a dome (圆顶状物)lined with 500 cameras, where they recorded body movements at different angles and then used those pictures to build a data set.
They then passed those pictures through a keypoint detector to identify and label specific body parts. The software also learns to connect the body parts with different people, so it knows, for example, that a particular person's hand will always be close to his or her upper arm. This makes it possible to track multiple people at once.
The pictures from the dome were recorded in 2D.But the researchers used 3D technology to help the system understand how each movement appears from different angles. With all of this data processed, the system can determine how the whole hand looks even if some fingers cannot be seen.
Now that the system has this data set to draw from, it can run with just one camera and one computer. It no longer requires the camera-lined dome to determine body poses, making the technology mobile and accessible.
The researchers say this technology could be used for interactions between humans and machines. It could play a huge role in VR (虚拟现实)experiences, allowing finer detection of the user's physical movement without any added hardware. It could also help with more natural interactions with a home robot. You could tell your robot to “pick that up", and it could easily understand what you're pointing at. By interpreting your physical gestures, the robot may even learn to read emotions by tracking body language. So when you' re silently crying with your face in your hands because a robot has taken your job, it might offer you a tissue.
32.What does the underlined words “this problem" in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Humans are addicted to technology. B.Human-robot relationship is poor.
C.Robots show too much trust in humans. D.Robots fail to interpret physical gestures.
33.What do we know about OpenPose
A.It tracks one person at a time. B.It can track slight body movements.
C.It uses a dome to recognize people. D.It can take 500 pictures in one second.
34.What makes OpenPose easy to use
A.The data set. B.3D technology.
C.A powerful computer. D.A camera-lined dome.
35.What would be the best title for the text
A.What robots are expected to do in the future B.Why is body language so important
C.Robots learn to read body language. D.Robots can and will change our lives.

My favourite novel is The Little Prince. It is an easy book to read and its lessons are difficult to understand. The book shows that everyone can be a adult, but few people are actually grown-up. In the story, the little prince believes he is the most uniquely person in the universe, so he travels to different planets prove it. The truth disappoints him but allow him to realize who he really is. The Little Prince teaches us the solution to become a grown-up is to put ourselves outside us comfort zone. A Feast of Chinese Culture and Art
In order to enrich our school life and deepen our understanding of Chinese culture, the Student Union organized a culture and art performance activity last Friday.
The activity themed “The Charming Chinese Culture” was held in the school hall from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Various performances were put on. It started with a splendid martial arts show performed by 20 boys, which immediately aroused the enthusiasm and excitement of the audience. Then, we appreciated some wonderful singing, dancing, and Chinese traditional musical instrument performances, and we even admired some excellent calligraphy and paper-cutting works made on the spot. What was the most impressive was that some women teachers dressed in Qipao performed an elegant fashion show.
Such a great performance is a feast of Chinese culture and art that has won favorable comments from all the teachers and students.

Text1:
W:How’s the apartment search going
M:I finally found a place! The rent is not too high, and the neighborhood is pretty good. But it’s miles away from work. That is annoying. But I still took it because it is now almost impossible to find a place that accepts pets.
Text2:
M: That film is so disappointing. I don’t like the action scenes and the love story is so boring.
W: I agree. I like movies that give me a good laugh.
M: OK. No more car racing or war movies for us!
Text3:
W: Tim, you said you were gonna call last night. I was expecting your call all night.
M: I’m terribly sorry, but I was with my brother all night last night. I couldn’t spare a moment to call.
Text4:
M: What a warm shining day! Would you like to go out for a picnic in the park
W: I wish I could join you, but I have a book due today. How about tomorrow
M: But then our class will be going out to visit a museum.
Text5:
M: Honey, dinner is ready!
W: Hmm, that smells good! I love your spaghetti, Daddy! Can you pass the cheese, please
M: Uh, sweetie…did you wash your hands
W: Oh…I guess I forgot. I’ll be right back.
Text6:
W: I’m looking for a CD by Carly Rae Jepsen. It’s called Party for One. Do you have one here
M: Let me take a look. Oh, I’m afraid they’re sold out.
W: Can I place an order in advance I’d like to give it to my brother for his birthday.
M: Of course, I’ll just put down your order information. You can pay half of the price in advance and pay the rest when you pick up the CD. It will arrive in about a week.
W: Yes, that’s fine. His birthday is still two weeks away.
Text7:
M: Where are you going, Mary It’s Sunday today.
W: I know, Dad. But I have to go to the school hall.
M: Why
W: Because we’ll put on a play there on Christmas Eve. And we must prepare for it.
M: Will you come home for lunch
W: No. And I won’t come home for supper, either. We won’t get home until 8: 00 this evening.
M: Then I’ll pick you up at 8: 10 after I see the film with your mom. The film will be on from 6: 00 to 8: 00.
W: Good. Then I won’t have to take the bus. It’s always so crowded in the evening.
Tex8:
M: And now, here is our guest Jane Thomas. Good morning, Jane. Can you tell us something about Montreal’s famous island bicycle tour in June
W: Well, it is a yearly event which is opened to anybody who’d like to ride a bicycle through the streets of Montreal. The tour covers a standard distance of 65 kilometers. But the route’s quite different every year. Even people who’ve already done it enjoy doing it again.
M: Well, what’s the usual pace for a participant
W: Between 12 and 30 kilometers per hour.
M: I understand last year’s tour had 45, 000 cyclists. How many do you expect this year
W: The same as last year. And since we usually have so many participants, maybe I can take this opportunity to remind our listeners to sign up early. We filled up quickly last year, and we had to refuse a lot of applications.
M: Do you have any other tips for our cyclists this year
W: Yes. Take water with you, and pack a good lunch with plenty of fruit for energy. Candy and chocolate won’t work.
Text9:
M: When was the last time you came in
W: I haven’t been to the dentist in three years.
M: You really need to be coming in every six months for a cleaning and a checkup.
W: I know. I just got my insurance back.
M: Let me take a look at your teeth. Open up… Well, even though you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, your teeth are looking very healthy. How often do you brush
W: Every morning and every night. But sometimes three times a day.
M: That’s great. Okay, just relax. I’m going to clean your teeth now. I know the light is bright, so you can close your eyes if you want to.
W: Okay.
M: Just a little bit longer. You’re doing great… Okay, you’re all finished. The dentist will be in soon to go over everything with you. As far as I can see, your teeth look good. I don’t think you have any problems.
W: Wonderful. Thank you. Oh, I wanted to ask if you’d be able to give me an extra toothbrush to take home.
M: Sure. I’ll put together a small bag of supplies for you.
W: Thanks.
Text10:
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire, England. This means that it had been built before recorded history began. Experts say that the first stones were put there by people between 3000 and 2000 BC. That makes Stonehenge one of the oldest constructions in the world. However, it’s not like the pyramids in Egypt or the Great Wall of China. Stonehenge is just a collection of large stones that are balanced on top of each other. Some of the supporting stones are more than 7.3 meters tall. In comparison, the basketball player Yao Ming is 2.29 meters tall. But like the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge wasn’t built in a day. In fact, experts believe that there were many stages in the construction of Stonehenge, the last of which was finished around 1600 BC. Most scientists believe that it is an ancient burial ground. Other people believe it has important religious associations. Scientists have been studying Stonehenge for over 400 years, and they are still finding new things. In 2014, scientists found more burial grounds that they believe come from 4000 BC.
