Unit 5 Into the unknown
第一部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The ocean is one of the most interesting and breathtaking places on the entire planet. The ocean has witnessed a variety of disappearances and other mysteries, most of which cannot and have not been explained by modern science. Here are some interesting unsolved sea mysteries of the world.
USS Scorpion
In May 1968, USS Scorpion, an American submarine, departed from Norfolk, Virginia, on its way towards the Mediterranean. The crew had almost a decade of experience, and yet the sub disappeared and broke into pieces on the sea floor. There were 99 men aboard the sub, all of whom lost their lives.
Baltic Sea Sub
In the later half of 2014, a mysterious vessel was spotted by Swedish citizens, many of whom described it as a Russian submarine, in the Baltic Sea. The military spent much time in investigating, but found no sign of the mysterious sub.
Bermeja Island
During the 1970s, the Bermeja Island served as a bit of a marker for Mexico and its economic zone. Around 20 years later, the island disappeared without any sign. Along with the island, numerous important documents about major oil reserves also went missing.
Gulf of Mexico Shipwreck
In 2001, Exxon Mobil was laying the pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico when people ran into a shipwreck around 2,600 feet under the surface. Upon exploring the shipwreck, archaeologists believed it to be a terrible spell (咒语), as something would constantly go wrong when they went down to explore.
SS Edmund Fitzgerald
Lake Superior is so large that it behaves like an inland ocean, including terrific storms. In November 1975, one such storm struck the vessel SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which was headed to Detroit. The Fitzgerald disappeared after communications were lost. A week later, a sonar ship found the vessel 500 feet under the water. Nobody was found, though.
1.Why does the author think of USS Scorpion as a mystery
A.Because 99 men died aboard the sub.
B.Because it lost its way towards the Mediterranean.
C.Because the sub still sank even with experienced crew.
D.Because there is no information on the unknown sub.
2.What do Baltic Sea Sub and Gulf of Mexico Shipwreck have in common
A.Both are highly put on a bad spell. B.Both the names of the vessels are unknown.
C.Both are found on the beach. D.Both are said to be Russian vessels.
3.Which mystery is different from the others
A.SS Edmund Fitzgerald. B.Bermeja Island.
C.Gulf of Mexico Shipwreck. D.USS Scorpion.
B
It seems we can't get off the planet fast enough. Two thirds of NASA's money is spent on manned space exploration. We've seen all we can see on Earth, right Wrong. The final place is here, under the surface of the sea.
When we are heading down into the ocean, human limits are quickly reached. At a depth of 200 metres, the water is as black as a moonless night. Most nuclear submarines (核潜艇) would implode (内爆) before they reach I km down. At a depth of 3 km—still less than the average depth of the ocean—there's a good chance that you'll discover a new species. The deepest-diving whales go no further. At the very bottom, about 11 km down, lies the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean. Twelve humans have walked on the Moon, but only three have seen the Challenger Deep with their own eyes.
Yet things live down there. Big things. A very loud sound was once heard and scientists suggested that it was produced by an animal bigger than a blue whale, the largest creature known on the planet.
In the late 1990s, a deep-water submarine was dropped in the Southern Ocean, and passing 4,000 metres, it discovered something huge passing under it. Surprised Don't be. The ocean covers 71% of the planet's surface and we've studied less than 5% of it. We know more about the dark side of the Moon than about the bottom of the sea.
One reason that we explore space is to find evidence of other life forms. The search for life outside of Earth is important, but robots can look under the dry rock on Mars better than humans. They're absolutely important for doing ocean research too, but they can't look under the sea. The cost of exploration is rising, but the results would benefit all our lives.
Perhaps now it's time to begin a new period of sea exploration. Manned exploration of space is science fiction. The adventure in the deep sea is a science fact.
1. What do the examples in Paragraph 2 suggest
A. Sea exploration is no easy task.
B. Nuclear submarines need to be improved.
C. The ocean is far deeper than people expected.
D. The condition under the sea is similar to that
2. What do we know about the Challenger Deep
A. Blue whales live there.
B. No one has ever been there.
C. People are terrified at the sight of it.
D. It is the deepest known location in the ocean.
3. What does the author think of the discovery in the Southern Ocean
A. It's surprising. B. It's no wonder. C. It's worrying. D. It's no success.
4. What does the author want to tell us
A. Space exploration is of little value.
B. We spend too much money on space travel.
C. Humans' success lies in how much they explore the sea.
D. The ocean is the place where we should make our efforts.
C
When I brush my teeth each morning, I see my tongue, and feel slightly amazed that it's going to be insured(投保) for 1 million. I had never really paid much attention to it until I became a baby-food tester. Now, my tongue—or rather, its ability to determine tiny changes in flavor—is the primary tool of my job. The company I work for believes I'm so valuable in terms of getting the balance of tastes in baby food just right that it's worth getting insured.
I'm what you call a "supertaster"—one of a small percentage of the population born with twice as many taste buds(味蕾) as the rest. Babies are typically born with more than 10,000 taste buds, but in later life they decrease to as few as 5,000. At 24 I should really be at the height of my tasting power.
At first, baby food tasted strange to me—it took a while to get used to eating a meal that had been reduced to a paste(糊状物). Also, I have to make a real effort to think like a baby—to imagine that each time I put a spoonful of pie in my mouth, I am six months old again. I still avoid tasting baby fish pie after breakfast.
I am more aware of the need to protect my tongue these days, particularly before a tasting session, and to avoid any strong tastes or smells, such as coffee and perfume. I also drink plenty of water during the day to clean my palate(上颚).
It's not really something that affects my personal life. Outside work it's a joy to be able to taste everything so deeply. One consequence is that eating is a much richer experience for me than for most people. If I take one bite of a salad, I can tell immediately what's in the dressing. I like the challenge of guessing what's in anything I eat, and the satisfaction of rarely getting it wrong.
1.The reason why the author's tongue is going to be insured is that _____.
A.few people have his tasting power
B.he manages valuable assets for his company
C.baby-food testers' taste buds are easily injured
D.he makes well-balanced meals for babies
2.The author is a good baby-food tester because he _____.
A.is good at making baby food B.has more taste buds
C.knows a lot about nutrition D.is very young
3.How does the author protect his tongue _____
①By avoiding strong tastes.
②By brushing his teeth every day.
③By staying away from strong smells.
④By drinking plenty of water.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④ D.①③④
4.What does the author mean by saying "eating is a much richer experience for me than for most people" in the last paragraph
A.He can learn a lot about food by tasting it.
B.He can easily tell which of two foods is better.
C.He is more sensitive to the flavor than other people.
D.He spends much of his time eating every day.
D
One of the main challenges facing many countries is how to maintain their identity in the face of globalization and the growing multi-language trend. "One of the main reasons for economic failure in many African countries is the fact that, with a few important exceptions, mother-tongue education is not practiced in any of the independent African states," said Neville Alexander, director of the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.
In response to the spread of English and the increased multi-language trend arising from immigration, many countries have introduced language laws in the last decade. In some, the use of languages other than the national language is banned in public spaces such as advertising posters. One of the first such legal provisions(规定) was the 1994 "Toubon Law" in France, and the idea has been copied in many countries since then. Such efforts to govern language use are often considered as futile by language experts, who are well aware of the difficulty in controlling fashions in speech and know from research that language switching among bilinguals is a natural process.
It is especially difficult for native speakers of English to understand the desire to maintain the "purity" of a language by law. Since the time of Shakespeare, English has continually absorbed foreign words into its own language. English is one of the most mixed and rapidly changing languages in the world, but that has not been a barrier to acquiring superiority and power. Another reason for the failure of many native English speakers to understand the role of the state regulation is that it has never been the Anglo-Saxon way of doing things. English has never had a state-controlled authority for the language, similar, for example, to the Academic Francaise in France.
The need to protect national languages is, for most western Europeans, a recent phenomenon—especially the need to ensure that English does not unnecessarily take over too many fields. Public communication, education and new ways of communication promoted by technology, may be key fields to defend.
1.Neville Alexander believes that _____.
A.mother-tongue education is not practiced in all African countries
B.globalization has resulted in the economic failure of Africa
C.globalization has led to the rise of the multi-language trend
D.lack of mother-tongue education can lead to economic failure
2.The underlined word "futile"(in Paragraph 2) most probably means "_____".
A.workable B.practical C.useless D.unnecessary
3.What can we infer from the passage
A.English has taken over fields like public communication and education.
B.Many aspects of national cultures are threatened by the spread of English.
C.Most language experts believe it is important to promote a national language.
D.Europeans have long realized the need to protect their national languages.
4.Which is the best title for the passage
A.Fighting against the rule of English B.Protecting local languages and identity
C.Globalization and the multi-language trend D.To maintain the purity of languages by law

One of my sisters who had worked abroad for 10 years returned home for her vacation.
All the family members were happy. My parents gave her a simple celebration and prepared food for us to share.
While staying with them, an idea came to me. We could have a family outing on the beach! All of my siblings(兄弟姐妹) agreed! It had been a long time since we went outing last time and it was the chance to do it again. We set off the next day.
The weather was nice and many people were enjoying the seawater. I ran towards the water and felt the coldness of it. My siblings placed our things in a big cottage (村舍). They brought a lot of food and planned to cook fish and pork meat. Everyone in the cottage was busy preparing for food while the children went to swim. I couldn't swim though I was already a teenager. That was why I just played in the shallow part of the sea.
On the other side of the beach, I saw a small fishing boat. I never tried to ride on it, but while I was looking at it, I was eager to take a ride on the boat. Without a second thought, I went to the boat alone. I paid the fisherman for using his boat and started to push it towards the sea. In my mind, I would not go to the deep part. A few minutes later, I made it float on water and I enjoyed it! I made it move forward and kept it afloat for several minutes. Suddenly, the seawater became disturbing and large waves surrounded me. I couldn't control the boat anymore.

第二节
答案:
Paragraph 1:
My boat was pulled towards the deeper part. I was afraid and nervous! I shouted loudly to ask my siblings for help. However, none of them heard me because they were too far away from me, and then I began to cry. Suddenly, a big wave came and I was thrown into the water. I didn't know how to swim. I struggled in the seawater and kept on waving my hands. That was the last moment I could remember.
Paragraph 2:
When I came to life, I was lying in the hospital. My parents were beside me. I asked my mother what happened. She said my brother saw me while I was waving my hands. I was rescued by him and they immediately sent me to the hospital. I was grateful that I was still alive. My mother said we would have another celebration for another life given to me. I told them the celebration would never be held on the beach.
