Unit 2 Wildlife Protection 综合测试
一、阅读理解
Wild Track is an organization that aims to protect endangered animals like rhinos. They use a computer program that runs photos of animal track through an algorithm (演算法).Then the program makes the same observations as a tracker would, allowing scientists to know where individual animals go. However, the program itself needs “training”.
It starts with collecting good photos of prints from endangered animals in captivity ( 圈养).As people send in photos of tracks from animals in the wild, the FIT program can compare it to tracks from animals it “knows”. As the program becomes more accurate, Wild Track hopes it will become a major tool for monitoring any endangered species.
Anyone can help Wild Track by taking images of tracks and sending them to a partner organization called naturalist.org. The only tool you need is a digital camera or cellphone. After finding a clear track, place one ruler along the bottom of the footprint and another along the left side. Below the footprint, place a note containing your exact name and the date. Holding the camera or cellphone directly above the track, take a photo showing the footprint, rulers and note. Later, visit naturalist.org and follow the instructions on the site to send your photo.
Wild Track needs photos of footprints made not only by animals in captivity but also those living in the wild. In wild places, you should take care not to disturb animals in their natural environment. If you intend to photograph in a wild area that is unknown to you, then you should not go there alone. Instead, go with someone who is familiar with the region and experienced at tracking.

A French power producer, HDF Energy, expects its hydrogen energy power station in Namibia to produce electricity by 2024. And HDF Energy announced the plan for the southern African country publicly recently. This plant in Namibia would be Africa’s first. HDF Energy is also considering new projects across Africa.
The project is expected to cost about $181 million. Once operated, it will supply electrical power, 24 hours a day throughout the year. It will increase the electricity supply to Namibia, which imports 40 percent of power from neighboring South Africa. Namibia is one of the world’s sunniest and least densely-populated countries. It wants to use its great potential for solar and wind energy to produce green hydrogen power. And Namibia wants to become a renewable energy center in Africa.
Hydrogen power is considered clean when it is made with reproducible power. It is seen as an important way to reduce carbon-based fuels in the energy industry. The project will use solar panels(电池板)to produce electricity. Electrolyzers produce hydrogen which can be easily stored by using electricity to separate hydrogen from oxygen in water.
Another company named Hyphen Hydrogen Energy is in talks with Namibia’s government to secure an agreement for a planned hydrogen project. European Union says they also plan a deal with the country to support its green hydrogen industry. The German government has already agreed to invest $41.8 million in Namibia’s hydrogen plan. European nations are trying to reduce their dependence on Russian energy. Obeth Kandjoze, director-general of Namibia’s National Planning Commission said EU financial support was likely to be limited, but a financial deal could bring in other investors.
5.What do we know about Namibia according to the text
A.It has the longest sunny days in the world.
B.It is the renewable energy center of Africa.
C.It owns Africa’s first hydrogen energy power station.
D.Its power supply highly depends on neighbouring countries.
6.Which word could be the best to describe the hydrogen energy
A.Environmental-friendly. B.Harmful. C.Widely-applied. D.Low-cost.
7.Why do European countries support Namibia’s hydrogen industry
A.To seek high profit from the industry.
B.To reduce the air pollution in Namibia.
C.To supply enough electricity to Namibia.
D.To decrease their power import from Russia.
8.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The storage of hydrogen is the toughest part of the project.
B.The power station will solve the power shortage in Namibia.
C.The hydrogen project in Namibia may attract more investment.
D.The application of hydrogen energy is popular around the world.
Japan is aging faster than any other nation. By the end of this decade, there will be three retirees for every child under 15 and before long, one in six people will be over 80. Its population will soon be falling by nearly a million people every year and some people predict that, some time in the next century, the last Japanese person will die. Other countries are encouraging immigration to deal with their demographic woes. But not Japan, which is using different ways to reduce pressure put on health care and social services.
The Toto-made toilet, common in Japanese hotels, can push up to help the elderly. Now Toto is working with Daiwa House, Japan’s largest house builder, to equip toilets for retirees. These have medical sensors that measure blood sugar levels, the blood pressure and body fat of the user. The data is emailed to the local GP through a built-in internet device (装置). So make sure you eat your greens and stay regular, or the doctor will be in touch.
The over-75s account for more than a quarter of the deaths in car accidents on Japanese roads. Toyota is working with Professor Kawashima, who developed brain training games for Nintendo, to create intelligent cars that monitor brain activity in the elderly. Other technologies could also work to keep elderly drivers cautious.
Japan has twice as many pets as it has children. But real animals are difficult to look after as their owners age. Paro is a furry white baby seal robot which responds to petting by moving its tail and opening and closing its eyes. It shows emotions such as surprise, happiness and anger, and has sold well in nursing homes where it is reported to stimulate (刺激) responses among those with dementia (痴呆).
Japan’s Institute of Physical and Chemical Research has developed Riba, a nursing care robot that can lift the elderly out of bed.
9.What does the underlined phrase “demographic woes” refer to
A.Retirement age. B.Public finance.
C.Population problems. D.Employment difficulties.
10.What’s the main function of the toilets for retirees
A.Giving them first aid. B.Monitoring their health.
C.Helping them send emails. D.Sending them off the toilet.
11.What do we know about the seal robot
A.It is hard to look after. B.It sells well in nurseries.
C.It only makes a positive response. D.It is well received in nursing homes.
12.How does Japan improve the healthcare for the elderly
A.By advocating companies work together.
B.By switching to life-long training classes.
C.By developing hi-tech products and services.
D.By correcting medical personnel’s service attitudes.

Besides, too much time spent using social media may decrease their real life communication. What’s worse, constant exposure to the fantasy world tends to harm teens’ self-dignity and hence leads to a lack of self-confidence, let alone the unhealthy information.
In view of the above mentioned consequences, for teens, proper use of social media is a must. First, parents should well guide their kids and set a limit. Moreover, teens should bear in mind that study is a top priority and thus spend less time on social media.
