Unit 4 History and Traditions
It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on I think better that way.” But is that really true Does music help concentrate
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”

Robert Frost was an established American poet. Frost spent most of his life in the northeastern United States, which heavily inspired his poetic images. He used to take up different occupations before being able to make his living as a poet. Frost worked at a factory and as a teacher, and a farmer while he wrote poems and submitted to various magazines and publications. Frost studied at Dartmouth College and Harvard, but he quitted both without receiving degrees.
In 1912, Frost moved to England, and it was there that he published his first two collections of poetry. When he returned to the U. S. a few years later, he was a recognized poet. Frost and his family moved to a farm in New Hampshire. He soon published his third collection of poetry, which contained many of his best-known poems, such as The Road Not Taken and Birches. These poems showed a deep appreciation for the beauty and wisdom of the natural world and a drive for spiritual understanding. Frost’s down-to-earth approach made it easy for readers to relate to his personal experience.
By the end of his lifetime, Frost had become a famous and beloved American poet. His poems describe the everyday details of rural life and reveal his complexity, independent spirit, and often humorous view of the world. Frost’s biographer (传记作者) wrote of him:“He was a loner who liked company; a poet of isolation(孤独)who sought a mass of audience; an outsider who sought to fit in; while preferring to stay at home, he traveled more than any poet of his generation to give lectures and readings, even though he remained frightened of public speaking to the end. ”

A.poets of Frost’s time didn’t like giving a lecture
B.Frost’s poetry is very complex but entertaining
C.there is apparent contradiction in Frost’s character

In London a painting show was on in Frida’s honor. Her workings were described as “a ribbon around a bomb”, which suggests Frida had a big influence on the art of her time. Unfortunately, she is actually a much bigger name today than she was during her time.
Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City, Frida was attacked by polio (小儿麻痹症) at the age of seven. Her spine (脊柱) became bent as she grew older. Then, a severe school-bus crash broke her back in several places. Throughout her life, despite many operations on her, nothing can be able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering, Frida learned to paint by herself.
In 1929, she got married to Diego, another famous Mexican artist. The husband’s strong influence on his wife’s style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s, known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.
Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s, even in Mexico. Her first one-woman show in her motherland was not held until 1953. For more than a decade after her passing away in 1954, Frida’s works still remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.
9.What does the underlined part mean
A.A much stronger person. B.A far finer artist.

A.polio B.her bent spine
C.the back injuries D.the operations on her

He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tchaikovsky’s training set him on a path to combine what he had learned with the native musical practices to which he had been exposed from childhood. He first helped write a song in 1844, at an age when most children are still in kindergarten. At home, his mother sang folk songs, which helped develop his interest in music. Mozart was Tchaikovsky’s favourite composer and he influenced Tchaikovsky’s life and work. For 11 years, beginning in 1866, Tchaikovsky taught at the Moscow School of Music. During his time there, he wrote music for the piano, along with ballets, operas and symphonies. He was famous for writing the music for the ballet Swan Lake in 1876.
故选A项。
根据第三段的句子“Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration.(音量比音乐类型更重要。研究发现,音乐音量越大,注意力越不集中)”可知,音乐的音量会影响注意力。故选D项。
3.推理判断题。根据第五段中Taj所说的话“I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.(如果我一边听音乐一边看书,我就无法集中注意力。然而,当我写作时,我觉得音乐可以帮助我集中注意力。我没有文思枯竭。对我来说,把我的话写在纸上很容易)”和第六段中Danela所说的话“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps(也许对阅读没有帮助,但在数学方面,听音乐肯定有帮助)”可知,Taj和Danela的共同之处是他们不能一边听音乐一边专心阅读。故选C项。

根据文章第一段“before being able to make his living as a poet He used to take up different occupations before being able to make his living as a poet. Frost worked at a factory and as a teacher, and a farmer while he wrote poems and submitted to various magazines and publications. (在他能以诗人的身份谋生之前,他曾从事过各种各样的职业。弗罗斯特在工厂工作,当过老师,当过农民,同时他还写诗,向各种杂志和出版物投稿。) ”可知弗罗斯特之所以做那么多工作,是因为一开始写诗不能养家糊口。故选D项。
6.推理判断题。根据文章第二段“Frost and his family moved to a farm in New Hampshire. He soon published his third collection of poetry, which contained many of his best-known poems, such as The Road Not Taken and Birches. These poems showed a deep appreciation for the beauty and wisdom of the natural world and a drive for spiritual understanding.(弗罗斯特和他的家人搬到了新罕布什尔州的一个农场。他很快出版了他的第三本诗集,其中包括许多他最著名的诗歌,如《未走的路》和《桦树》。这些诗表现了对自然世界的美丽和智慧的深刻欣赏,以及对精神理解的动力。)”可知,搬到农场后弗罗斯特诗歌的主题多是关于自然的内容。故选B项。
7.词句猜测题。根据文章第二段“These poems showed a deep appreciation for the beauty and wisdom of the natural world and a drive for spiritual understanding. Frost’s down-to-earth approach made it easy for readers to relate to his personal experience. (这些诗歌表现了对自然世界的美丽和智慧的深刻欣赏和精神理解的驱动力。弗罗斯特脚踏实地的方法让读者很容易联想到他的个人经历。)”可知弗罗斯特的诗主要与自然有关,是非常脚踏实地的,所以划线词与选项B中的Sensible and practical(明智和实用的)意思相近。故选B项。
8.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段“Frost’s biographer (传记作者) wrote of him: “He was a loner who liked company; a poet of isolation(孤独)who sought a mass of audience; an outsider who sought to fit in; while preferring to stay at home, he traveled more than any poet of his generation to give lectures and readings, even though he remained frightened of public speaking to the end.” (弗罗斯特的传记作者这样评价他:“他是一个喜欢有人陪伴的孤独者;一个寻求广大读者的与世隔绝的诗人;一个试图融入其中的局外人;虽然他更喜欢呆在家里,但他比同时代的任何一位诗人都更喜欢到处旅行,做演讲和朗读,尽管他到最后仍然害怕公开演讲。”)”可知通过他的传记作家对他的描述中的loner与company, a poet of isolation与a mass of audience以及outsider与stay at home等这些互相矛盾的词汇可推知弗罗斯特的性格是矛盾的。故选C项。
