The risk of pre-schooling
“Young children learning to read is one of the most important things primary education does. It’s fundamental to children making progress in life,” says Dominic Wyse, a professor of primary education at University College London, in the UK. “While learning literacy is vital to childern, the way we teach it really matters.”
In a 2022 report, he states that English school system’s intense focus on phonics – a method that involves matching the sound of a spoken word or letter, with individual written letters, through a process called “sounding out” – could be failing some children. A reason for this is that the tests used to assess that early learning may have little to do with the skills actually needed to read and enjoy books or other meaningful texts. For example, the tests may ask pupils to “sound out” and spell nonsense words, to prevent them from simply guessing, or recognising familiar words. Since nonsense words are not meaningful language, children may find the task difficult and puzzling. It doesn’t end up being meaningful, it ends up being memorising rather than understanding context.
Children who attend intensive preschools do not have higher academic abilities in later grades than those who did not attend such preschools, several studies now show. Early education can however have a positive impact on social development – which in turn feeds into the likelihood of graduation from school and university as well as being associated with lower crime rates. In short, attending preschool can have positive effects on later achievement in life, but not necessary on academic skills.
Too much academic pressure may even cause problems in the long run. A study published in January 2022 suggested that those who attended a preschool with a strong academic emphasis, showed lower academic achievements a few years later, compared to those who had not gained a place.

Teamwork Doubles the Strength
Teamwork is really important for any class or team to achieve its goals and objectives. Let me give you three reasons why teamwork is advantageous.
As individuals, we possess diverse talents, strengths, weaknesses and experiences. A team is like a blanket that weaves what each of us possesses, resulting in an end product that is diverse yet similar. As team members exchange thoughts and experiences, there can be more efficiency and effectiveness at problem-solving. This pooling of talents can also lead to greater innovation and success.
Take Leicester City, for example. It won the Premier League in 2016, to the disbelief of many soccer fans. Leicester City, previously regarded as the underdog in the League, displayed surprisingly impressive teamwork that led to its unbelievable victory in soccer history.
Next, teamwork helps to increase efficiency and productivity as members share the workload. It reduces the stress on each of us and ensures the completion of tasks within the regulated time frame. When work is distributed and each of us in a team specializes in specific tasks, we can expect greater job satisfaction.
And finally, working in a team multiplies learning opportunities. Team members learn from more experienced members who may offer deeper insights and perspectives. Newer members may also contribute new and brave ideas. Besides encouraging the sharing of knowledge and experiences, teamwork also develops soft skills like communication and interpersonal skills. We learn to respect differences in working styles and opinions, and develop trust when working with others.
Some may think that working in isolation is more efficient since more time is taken when cooperating with others. For more talented individuals, working alone means being the star of a project — there’s no need to share the success or glory with others. But, the loss of cooperativity that only team effort can generate may also prevent the team from reaching its fullest potential.

How the smartphone affected teens
Some parents might worry about their teens spending so much time on their phones because it represents a complete departure from how they spent their own adolescence. But spending this much time on screens is not just different—in many ways, it’s actually worse.
Spending less time with friends means less time to develop social skills. A 2014 study found that sixth graders who spent just five days at a camp without using screens ended the time better at reading emotions on others’ faces, suggesting that teens’ screen-filled lives might cause their social skills to decline.
In addition, teens using smartphones read books, magazines and newspapers much less than previous generations did as teens: In the annual Monitoring the Future survey, the percentage of high school seniors who read a non-required book or magazine nearly every day dropped from 60 percent in 1980 to only 16 percent in 2015. College teachers tell me that students have more trouble reading longer text passages, and rarely read the required textbooks.
This isn’t to say that teens who use smartphones don’t have a lot going for them. They are physically safer and more tolerant than previous generations were. They also seem to have more realistic expectations than their parents did at the same age. But the smartphone threatens to disturb them before they even get started.
To be clear, moderate smartphone use—up to an hour a day—is not linked to mental health issues. However, most teens are on their phones much more than that.
Somewhat to my surprise, the teens I interviewed said they would rather see their friends in person than communicate with them using their phones. Parents used to worry about their teens spending too much time with their friends—they were a distraction, a bad influence, a waste of time. But it might be just what teens need.

Moustache(胡子) for Cash
“Movember”, as the annual event is known, sees men in countries including the UK, US and Australia grow out their facial hair while collecting sponsorship money from friends, family and colleagues, with the money going to cancer charities.
The month of no shaving began unofficially in 2003, when a pair of men from Australia persuaded their family to join them in growing a moustache in order to encourage men to get themselves checked for cancer, which is seen as distasteful by some males. A year later, the group decided to set up the Movember Foundation, asking friends and colleagues to offer donations of money to support their efforts, and raised a massive A$54,000 which was shared between a number of health projects. With thanks most likely to social media, Movember soon went global and the foundation now operates worldwide, having raised over £440 million since 2004. The effects of the fundraising are wide-reaching, which had made a significant discovery in the treatment of cancer.
The issue of some men being too self-willed to visit their doctor for a checkup, or perhaps being raised in a culture of “tough it out”, has led some males to neglect their health, which may mean it could be too late if something potentially deadly did develop. However, Movember is helping to break down the shame of male health by making it more accessible, meaning that men are more likely to visit their doctors. They found a way to appeal to men in a way that other campaigns just don’t – with a sort of blokey① jokiness.
① blokey: behaving in a way that is supposed to be typical of men , especially men enjoying themselves in a group.

Singapore's Information Technology Strategy
Singapore's information technology strategy rests on two major legs. The first leg is world-class basic facilities. Being a city-state, it is relatively easy to connect every home, office and hotel room. Our objective is to provide broad-band everywhere, either wired or wireless. We will make it a readily available utility like water, electricity, gas and telephone. We are well on our way there. We now require, by regulation, every new home to be equipped with broad-band in the same way as it is required to have water and electricity.
The second leg is the education of our entire population in IT (information technology). Like reading, writing and arithmetic, computers are best learnt when we are young. Today's children can click the mouse faster than we can blink. In many countries, children of middle-class families have no difficulty with this new technology. But, without special effort, there is a danger that children of poorer families will miss out on the opportunity to learn IT. Like the piano and violin, one can still learn the computer as an adult. But rarely does one acquire the same facility. The strategy in Singapore is therefore to teach information technology to every child regardless of his family background. The Education Ministry now has a multi-billion dollar programme to provide one computer for every 2 schoolchildren in Singapore from first grade onwards. Every teacher will have a notebook.
Most Singaporeans now understand the importance of IT, if not for themselves, at least for their children and grandchildren. Over 40% of households in Singapore now own PCs. Over one-third of households in Singapore already enjoy access to Internet. What we want is for every Singaporean to be computer literate so that he can function effectively in any bank, factory or restaurant, just as one would expect an employee to be able to read, write and count. An employer in Singapore in the future should not have to worry that his employee does not now how to use a computer or the Internet.

Does your memory fail as you age
I’m 62 years old. Like many of my friends, I forget names that I used to be able to recall effortlessly. When packing my suitcase for a trip. I walk to the bedroom and by the time I get there, I don’t remember what I came for. And yet my long-term memories are perfect. I remember the names of my third-grade classmates, the first record album I bought, my wedding day.
This is widely understood to be a classic problem of aging. But the problem is not necessarily age-related I’ve been teaching undergraduates for my entire career and I can prove that even 20-year-olds make short-term memory errors — loads of them. They walk into the wrong classroom; they show up to exams without the required No. 2 pencil; they forget something I just said two minutes before. These are similar to the kinds of things 70-year-olds do.
The relevant difference is not age but rather how we describe these events, the stories we tell ourselves about them. Twenty-year-olds don’t think, “Oh dear, this must be early-onset Alzheimer (早老性痴呆症).” They think, “I really need to get more than four hours of sleep.” The 70-year-olds observe these same events and worry about their brain health. This is to say that every error of short-term memory doesn’t necessarily indicate a biological disorder.
So how do we account for our subjective experience that older adults seem to search for words and names with difficulty First, there is a generalized cognitive (认知的) slowing with age-but given a little more time, older adults perform just fine. Second, older adults have to search through more memories than younger adults to find the fact or piece of information they’re looking for. Your brain becomes crowded with memories and information. It’s not that you can’t remember — you can — it’s just that there is so much more information to sort through.

Online “friends” – a threat to development
The impact of technology on the nature of our friendships has been a much - debated topic since the dramatic rise of social networks. Advances in mobile technology and social networking websites mean we spend more time online than ever before. It is therefore not surprising that so many psychologists, sociologists, and others are eager to give their thoughts on how this is impacting negatively on our society.
There is one element of social networking that is deeply worrying. We find ourselves in a hyper - connected world where people access social media day and night, excited to make announcements about the tiniest details of their lives. Research is starting to show that this culture is negatively affecting not our friendships but our character. Professor Larry D.Rosen says that young people who overuse social networking sites can become ineffective, and display anti -social behavior in their offline lives. But perhaps an even more disturbing effect is that one of our most basic emotions seems to be disappearing --empathy. This is the emotion that allows us to see the world from our friends’ points of view. Without it, we are far less able to connect and form meaningful adult relationships.
Professor Sherry Turkle suggests that people are no longer comfortable being alone. This is something confirmed by a study where 200 university students were asked to go without social media for 24 hours. Many admitted an addiction to their online social network; most complained that they felt cut off from family and friends. And yet being alone is a time when we self-reflect and get in touch with who we really are. It is only when we do this that we can make meaningful friendships with others.
These potential changes in our characters are rather alarming, so it is clear that we can’t neglect those negative impacts of social networks.

1.Dear Students’Union
My name is Li Ming, a student of our Qiming Middle School. I’m more than happy to give you some advice on the Campus cultural and creative products charity sale.
First, I think the time of the charity sale should be between 5:00 and 6:00 on Monday, on July 11, 2022, when we will be free. Besides, the place of the charity sale should be in each clas, where we will not be exposed to the sun. What’s the most important is that we can sell anything as long as they are cultural and creative.
Hope my suggestions can be of great help to you.
Yours
Li Ming

I’m Wang Jia, learning that our school wants to make some improvement in the school library. I am desperate to share some opinions.
When it comes to choosing facilities. I will recommend a coffee pared with adding the typing machine and the scanner, a coffee machine has evident advantages over them. On the one hand, there is a lack of coffee machine. On the other hand, a typing machine and a scanner can be easily accessible to us in our teachers’ office.
In terms of the inner decorations, without any doubt, green plants and paintings from our students and teachers can beautify our reading rooms. For one thing, green plants can provide fresh air. For another, paintings from our students and teachers showing our positive spiritual features, will enhance our artistic appreciation.
I hope you can consider my advice seriously. Thank you for sparing your time for reading my letter.
Yours,
Wang Jia

3.Dear editor,
Having read the news from the English Paper that a small village, lying in a remote mountain area, which is rich in black tea, is encountering an unpleasant event, I feel sorry for them. Due to the inconvenience of transportation and information, it leads to poor sales in black tea and thus affects the income of the villagers. Now there is a call on our readers to give some suggestions. I understand the feeling and feel sympathetic to the villagers, and I will try to make some conducive suggestions here.
As far as I’m concerned, to start with, it’s a better choice to build up well-designed transportation, which will surely provide the villagers with enough convenience to deliver their products outside of the village so long as they are asked in the market. Besides, in terms of out-of-date information ways, the government should take effective measures to speed up creating information channels so that the villagers can get timely news about the products. In addition, as for the villagers, they should also make their own efforts to improve their knowledge on planting, which is beneficial to them to offer the market excellent and advanced goods.
I hope you will find these proposals useful, and I sincerely hope the villagers can move out of poverty soon.
Yours,
Zhang Hua

4.Dear headmaster,
I am Liming, a student from class one, grade three. I am very glad to hear that our school is planning to set the fourth lesson on Wednesday afternoon as art appreciation or subject expansion. I hope that subject expansion courses such as sinology and British and American culture can be provided. As is known to all, for high school seniors, the college entrance examination is the top priority, and these courses will help us prepare for it. For example, Appreciation of ancient poetry in sinology is helpful to our Chinese ancient poetry reading and writing, and having a good command of British and American culture can improve our English reading.
In view of the reasons mentioned above, I hope subject expansion courses such as sinology and British and American culture can be offered. I would appreciate it if you could take my suggestion into consideration.

5.Dear sir,
Hearing that the school is asking students for their feelings and suggestions on cloud classes. Here are some of my feelings and suggestions.
Because of the epidemic, we can’t go to school. Therefore, the school provides students with cloud classes, so that we can not miss our studies even at home. When the course began, I could clearly see the teacher on the computer screen, as well as his carefully prepared courseware for us. I can hear the voice of the teacher very clearly through the headset, which is a feeling I can’t feel in the classroom.
Cloud Classroom provides a good solution for students who cannot be taught face to face by teachers for some reasons. However, cloud classes can’t let students and teachers interact well, and the teacher can’t know whether students learn well. These need to be improved.
I hope these suggestions can help the school improve the cloud classroom.
Yours,
Li Hua
