五、概要写作
10.(2022·上海徐汇·统考一模)Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Why Don’t We Use the Math We Learn in School
How much of the math you’ve learned in school is used in everyday life For the majority of people, the answer is surprisingly little. Clearly, some people learn math very well and apply it in everyday problem-solving settings. The question is why most people don’t, in spite of spending many years practicing it.
The first explanation blames the failure of education. One of the major barriers to using a skill in real life is automaticity. We tend to find the least-effort solution to our problem. If struggling through a math problem is hard for you, you’ll find a different way to solve it that doesn’t rely on math. The familiar model for teaching mathematics revolves around teachers telling students certain rules, applying those rules to examples and students then practicing problems similar to the examples seen in class. By teaching in this way, a lot of the work and deep thought that went into the creation of these mathematical rules is lost. In that sense, people were never taught math thoroughly enough to use it automatically in real life.
The second explanation is a little different. It argues that people may develop competence in math classes, but they struggle to translate real-life problems into a format where they can use their mathematics knowledge. This seems most apparent in the case of applying algebra (代数). Students struggle with algebra, but they particularly struggle with word problems. Yet, the equivalent real-life problems are typically much harder than word problems. From this perspective, what people struggle with is not doing math, but recognizing where and how to apply math to real problems.
Educational researchers now emphasize the importance of transfer and deep understanding. They believe we need to give students more training in noticing and converting everyday situations into the math problems they know how to solve. By using real-life math applications, students can make connections between math and everyday life.

Once it was possible to define male and female roles easily by the division of labor. Men worked outside the home and earned the income to support their families, while women cooked the meals and took care of the home and the children. These roles were firmly fixed for most people, and there was not much opportunity for women to exchange their roles. But by the middle of this century, men’s and women’s roles were becoming less firmly fixed.
In the 1950s, economic and social success was the goal of the typical American. But in the 1960s a new force developed called the counterculture. The people involved in this movement did not value the middle-class American goals. The counterculture presented men and women with new role choices. Taking more interest in childcare, men began to share child-raising tasks with their wives. In fact, some young men and women moved to communal homes or farms where the economic and childcare responsibilities were shared equally by both sexes. In addition, many Americans did not value the traditional male role of soldier. Some young men refused to be drafted as soldiers to fight in the war in Vietnam.
In terms of numbers, the counterculture was not a very large group of people. But its influence spread to many parts of American society. Working men of all classes began to change their economic and social patterns. Industrial workers and business executives alike cut down on “overtime” work so that they could spend more leisure time with their families. Some doctors, lawyers, and teachers turned away from high paying situations to practice their professions in poorer neighborhoods.
In the 1970s, the feminist movement, or women’s liberation, produced additional economic and social changes. Women of all ages and at all levels of society were entering the work force in greater numbers. Most of them still took traditional women’s jobs as public school teaching, nursing, and secretarial work. But some women began to enter traditionally male occupations: police work, banking, dentistry, and construction work. Women were asking for equal work, and equal opportunities for promotion.
Today the experts generally agree that important changes are taking place in the roles of men and women. Naturally, there are difficulties in adjusting to these transformations.

There’s a longstanding debate on how to reduce emissions in the trucking industry. Germany is testing out a new system — eHighways, which feed electricity to trucks while they drive.
Figuring out how to reduce emissions in the commercial trucking industry is key to the fight against climate change. Because long-haul diesel(柴油机) trucks spend so much time on the road, they disproportionately produce pollutants, greenhouse gases, and contribute to dirty air.
Germany is at the forefront of this fight against truck emissions.
Using wires strung above the highway and a pantograph (current collector) mounted to the top of a truck, Germany’s e Highways use technology similar to that of an electric city bus. The system delivers power directly from the electrical line straight to the truck’s motor.
Adapting the same equipment that is used for driving trains and urban street cars, Siemens, the German electricity company, provided the equipment for the test route — stringing miles of high-voltage electrical cable above the Autobahn.
The eHighway system saves truckers weight and money compared to outfitting trucks with electric batteries — which could be both heavy and expensive. Using overhead wires on the freeway, a truck would only need a big enough battery to drive the short distance from the offramp to its destination. Not to mention, the money trucking companies would save on fuel, their largest cost.
While this system saves money in the long term, stringing thousands of miles of electrical cable above freeways would be costly to German taxpayers. Is it feasible For now, Germany is just testing it out. The eHighway system has also been tested in Sweden and a 1-mile stretch near Long Beach, California.
It would take 2,500 miles of electrical wiring to accommodate about 60% of German truck traffic. So far, only a couple 3-mile-stretches of highway outside Frankfurt, Schleswig-Holstein, and Baden-Württemberg are equipped with overhead electrical cables. By the end of the year, more than 20 trucks carrying real loads will be using the system. The companies funding the project want to see how the eHighway stretch performs in everyday use.
Building the overhead cables would cost the German government about $5 million dollars per mile. Germany’s Ministry of Environment will compare the results of this project with studies of trucks using electric batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. Based on the data, the ministry plans to decide in three to four years which eco-friendly technology to invest in and support.
“Numerous studies have come to the conclusion that overhead cable trucks, despite the high infrastructure costs, are the most cost-effective option,” the Ministry of Environment said to The New York Times.
No matter which option the ministry chooses, the goal is to create a more environment-friendly future for the commercial trucking industry.

Breaking up is hard to do but men’s hearts hurt most
When it comes to break-ups, men suffer more emotional pain than women, a study has found. The first-of-its-kind analysis used online relationships to map the most common problems experienced by couples who told their stories outside the therapist’s office.
A team of researchers at Lancaster University helped to produce the report. Charlotte Entwistle, the lead author, said: “Most of what we know comes from studies of people in couples therapy: a specific set of people. We wanted to understand not only what relationship problems are most commonly experienced by the public, but who experiences by the public, but who experiences which problems more.”
To bridge the gap the team analysed the characteristics of more than 184,000 people who had posted their problems to an anonymous online forum, and they created a “map” of the most common issues.
Communication was the most frequent, cited by nearly one in five people, while one in eight reported that trust was a struggle. The outcomes came as no surprise but the team was taken aback at the obvious gender differences. The theme that kept cropping up was the “heartache” felt, and the team recorded specific words such as “regret”, “break up”, “cry”, and “heart-broken”.
Contrary to expectation, men talked about heartbreak significantly more than women. The findings suggest that the stereotype of men being less emotionally invested in relationships may be inaccurate.
The researchers also found that men were more likely to seek online professional help. Dr Ryan Boyd, the lead researcher, said: “When you remove the traditional social stigmas against men for seeking help and sharing their emotions, they seem just as invested in working through rough patches in their relationships as women.”
The researchers hope that an accurate picture of relationship problems could help couples avoid common setbacks. Boyd said: “This gives us serious hope that we can use help-seeking behavior to better understand all types of social and psychological issues.”
The study was published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.

A new study suggests many Americans have not visited the most popular places of interest around the country or even in their hometown.
The study found that 25 percent of Americans have yet to visit "iconic landmarks" in their own cities. Twenty-three percent said they had not visited any of the nation’s natural wonders, famous buildings or historic battlefields.
The study was a project of the research service OnePoll and Zipcar, a car-sharing company.
Researchers questioned 2,000 Americans. Only 33 percent of them said they had been to Niagara Falls and just 28 percent had been to Arizona’s Grand Canyon. The study showed that only 30 percent had been to New York’s Empire State Building. Only 22 percent had ever visited the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Many Americans say they would like to travel more. More than half of those questioned said they would like to get out more. Forty-nine percent reported being "creatures of habit." By that, they mean they generally do the same things in the same way. That would leave little time to visit local or national landmarks.
The researchers found that the main reasons keeping Americans from exploring their cities or the country were money, lack of time and a lack of good transportation.
On social media, one Twitter user reacting to the study named a few reasons for not visiting famous places. The writer noted that “most of us don’t get paid days off, get punished for taking a day off, or simply can’t afford to visit anything or go anywhere anymore."
The Twitter user added, "Childcare costs more than College, College Loans costs more than a mortgage payment, and jobs don’t even pay for one of those things.”
The study found that three of the places Americans wanted to visit were Grand Canyon National Park, Yellowstone National Park and the Statue of Liberty.
The researchers also found that, on average, Americans go to a new coffee shop every five months, and a new restaurant every four months. They also spent time at a lake or near the ocean once every six months, and go to a park every five months.

Meet The Member Who Quit Sugar
When I was 15, I weighed 100 kg.
I was a size 20+ and hated the way I looked. I was a serial big eater and quite depressed. I would sit in front of the fridge, eat something, move to the cupboard, eat a packet of chips, and move back to the fridge.
It was a heartbreaking cycle of hate and food. I didn’t feel confident, pretty, or worthwhile.
Shopping made me cry, I avoided mirrors, and my social life came to an end. I actually lost friends because they told me I was antisocial. It became so bad that I wanted to abuse myself; my skin and my mind became my enemy.
But then, I turned my life around. I quit sugar.
It started with my mum. She staged an intervention (干预) that made me cry. I wanted to change — I needed to change — and she could see how unhappy I was.
She put me onto a diet that mostly aimed to schedule meals, and — to my shock horror — cut out all processed sugar. It was so hard at first. I remember the shame of sneaking chocolate and candies when the three o'clock hunger hits.
But the weeks kept coming and it just got easier. I stopped eating sugar, and I stopped loving it; simple as that.
I substituted chips and biscuits for fruit and nuts, and had cup-of-soups after school when I was hit by the desire. I also had more energy, having a 20-minute walk with my dog into my everyday routine; I began to love that personal time.
Cutting out sugar gave me so much more control over my body, and my outlook on life improved. So many people are intimidated by the words “quit sugar”. It’s not true. Fruit, honey, et cetera are natural sugars, and believe me, they fuel you better than chocolate bars ever could.
Now I’m 17, turning 18, and I weigh 70 kg. I still struggle with my weight, but this is where I sit naturally, and I am very proud of myself. I never thought I would be confident enough to wear dresses or skirts, and take leadership roles to put myself out there and develop my social skills.
I could never have done it without the support of my friends and family, and I urge everyone who wants to do right by themselves and change their diet — quitting sugar or otherwise — to share their decision with people. Develop a support network, online or offline, which can offer you advice or pick you up when you’re down. And I can assure you, from my own personal experience, your body will thank you, and you will thank yourself too.

Things to Do After You Study
Many students study with little thought about what comes after their study session. But what you do after studying could have an effect on how well you learn and remember new information. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.
When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. But research suggests that resting after you study may help you remember what you studied. The basic idea is this: by reducing your activity after the study session, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you have too much stimulation from electronic devices, games, lights and so on.
While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning - what is called “wakeful rest.” A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember, or recollect, information from prose passages after doing wakeful rest. The findings appeared in Neuroscience Letters. This study involved 45 younger people and 40 elderly adults.” Wakeful resting led to higher overall recollection in both age groups,” the researchers noted. If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. Just limit the amount of stimulation you get. It is really that easy!
In addition to wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school's website explains that “a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention optimally and therefore cannot learn efficiently.” It also says, “sleep itself has a role in the consolidation of memory, which is essential for learning new information.” Robert Stickgold, a doctor and sleep expert at Harvard Medical School, noted that new memories can be hard to keep. “When we first form memories, they're in a very raw and fragile form,” he said. Sleep is important for forming memories.
Now you have two suggestions for how to learn new information. Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study session. Then try to get a good night's sleep. That's a simple way to help you remember what you learn.

Teaching Children about Forgiveness
If you’ve seen your children struggle to forgive someone for hurting them, you know that forgiveness is complicated. After all, forgiveness is complicated for adults, too. At times, we wonder why we’re trying to forgive someone anyway; later, we might think we’ve forgiven them, only to experience a sudden burst of anger. Indeed, it takes many years for us to grasp the meaning of forgiveness as we grow up.
It’s understandable that children may feel hurt or angry when a friend does something less-than-kind to them. Maybe the friend said something unkind or broke something precious, embarrassed them, excluded them, or told their secrets. Children may be tempted to get even with a friend who’s done them wrong, by doing something worse or telling everyone how terrible the friend is, but trying to get revenge only escalates (升级) the conflict.
Parents can play an important role in teaching children about forgiveness. Children watch how important adults in their lives respond when someone does something unkind. Do they complain to others or speak directly to the person involved How long does it take them to get over being mad or hurt How do they get over it Parents can teach their children about the value of forgiveness by regularly practicing it in their own lives.
Sometimes parents can talk with their children about forgiveness, based on where kids are in their cognitive (认知的) and emotional development. For example, children need to understand that no one is perfect, so generously forgiving a well-meaning friend is a caring thing to do. If parents can help children see things a little more from other people’s perspective, this will make forgiveness easier. These conversations can change the way children think about forgiveness and help them emotionally recover when they inevitably experience harm and unfair treatment from others in life.

The Decline of Biodiversity
Biodiversity is the range of living things in an area. During the last 100 years, scientists have seen a great decline in biodiversity. Some studies show that one in eight plant species is threatened with extinction. It is estimated that 140,000 species of plants are lost each year.
Most of the extinctions in the last thousand years are due to humans. The main cause is the chopping down of tropical rain forests. Most of this destruction is done to create pasture (牧场) for beef cattle. Many rainforests in Central and South America have been burnt down to make way for cattle farming, which supplies beef to the rest of the world. It is estimated that for each pound of beef produced, 200 square feet of rainforest are destroyed. The forests are also cut down to make wheat for bread as well as fruit for human consumption.
The introduction of exotic (外来的) species is another threat. The latest research from the University of Southampton has revealed the impact of exotic species upon native wildlife, which could potentially lead to the extinctions of local species. When exotic species are introduced to a place, they try to establish a self-sustaining population. While the local species, which haven’t had a chance to evolve, often lack defenses and thus cannot compete against the exotic species.
The disappearance of certain food animals can be disastrous not only to larger animals but also to the entire ecosystem. It is these small creatures which convert much of the energy in an ecosystem from unusable (i.e. microscopic plants, decaying matter, etc.) into usable forms, namely their bodies. Their absence makes most energy and nutrients trapped in forms unusable to other species. This makes the environment less suitable for healthy living, and less capable of producing resources that humans need.

1.Dear Li Lei,
Knowing that you are facing problems about dealing with study pressure, I am very willing to help you.
First of all, you need to know you are not alone, which means many students have the same trouble as yours. As the National College Entrance Examination is coming, everyone expects to keep improving and get a satisfying result. Feeling stressed is normal at present, and that’s the very source your energy comes from. However, if sometimes the pressure is too much to bear, you are supposed to adjust mindset. Here are some recommended ways: Make arrangements for reasonable daily routine and necessary physical training; keep in touch with your teachers and classmates through network and other ways.
Hope my advice can help and wish you go through difficulties.

2.Dear Headmaster,
I’m a student in our school, having been exposed to the news that there has been a deserted open space beside our school playground, where it used to be the vegetable field cultivated by our teachers long time ago, and I’m only too anxious to show my humble opinions on the land use. From my perspective, the deserted land will definitely be a perfect place to be transformed as a room for student club activities.
In the first place, this land has aroused heated discussion among our students and I wish to bring to your attention. On one hand, though this land had been served as the vegetable field and multiple functions before, it stays vacant for a long time since it was not suitable for plant vegetables and lack of management. On the other, not only this open space but also every corner in our campus should be used effectively and play its role in school life. Owing to these consideration, we should make a change about this land use.
To improve the situation, it’s advisable for you to renovate the land into a clubhouse. First and foremost, since the clubhouse doesn’t require to be very specious, this land is the very place for student club activities.Besides, it’s also an urgent need for us to have a permanent place to hold various after-class activities. According to our survey based on our students, more than four fifth of us have a desire to own a clubhouse to practise performance and take part in all kinds of activities. Last but not least, as the president of student union, I’m confident that with the joint efforts of every class leader, we can map out a detailed plan to design and arrange this clubhouse in the following weeks.
I hope that the authorities concerned will consider my suggestions seriously and take full advantage of this vacant land to serve the school and our students. Thank you for sparing your time to read my letter and wish our school develop better.
Yours sincerely,
Wang Gang

On behalf of all students in our school, I’m writing to you about the school ban on ordering take-away food imposed by our school recently.
We all agree that the ban on take-away food is reasonable. The quality of take-away food is not reliable and might do harm to our health, so this ban is aimed at protecting our health and helping us form a good eating habit.
Meanwhile, there are still some problems even if we don’t order take-away food. We sincerely hope our school will improve the service of the school canteen. Basically, there is a variety of food in our school canteen and the taste is acceptable. But it is super-crowded during lunch break, and many of us have to line up too long. Is it possible more windows will offer food What’s worse, the food we can get after long-time waiting is cold in winter, which is far from satisfactory. Besides, we strongly advise our school to offer the night-time snacks. Most students have supper before five o'clock, so many of us, especially boys, feel hungry at night. Without night-time snacks, no wonder many students turn to instant noodles to satisfy our appetite at night, which is bad for health.
To sum up, our school has made a right decision, while there is still room for improvement, which all students are looking forward to.
Faithfully Yours
Li Ming

5.Dear Terry,
How delighted I am to have heard from you and I can identify with how hard you feel when facing the choices of part-time jobs to raise travel expenses for your summer vacation.
Comparing the three part-time jobs, I think the best choice is the second job as a language teacher to tutor local primary school students in learning English. First of all, the length of working time is not too long and you can make full use of your evening time. Though it can take up your two hours on Saturday, you can still have a full Sunday. What’s more, the hourly salary is relatively good and you can earn 900 yuan per week. Most importantly, through the teaching process and the interaction with the local pupils, this is a good chance for you to get the knowledge of local culture and customs, which is of great benefit to your study and your overall quality throughout the whole college life.
In summary, to be a language teacher is the best of all. I hope my opinion is useful to you.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

6.Dear Li Ming,
I am Wang Lei. I have been a fan of science fiction for a long time. I even wrote some short science fiction stories myself. Recently I decided not to read science fiction any more. I am writing to tell you about my experience.
You know I was addicted to science fiction before. After entering senior three, I found my study was tight and my exam results were not ideal, so I make up my mind to devote myself to studying. I try my best to cultivate my hobbies. For instance, I play badminton to relieve my stress, and join clubs to gradually quit novels. Reading novels is especially consuming because people are engrossed in the novel. After reading, we will be particularly tired. Moreover, my life was extremely irregular, which seriously affected my health and life. This experience made me understand the truth of balancing study and entertainment.

7.With the rapid development of science and technology in our society, people’s lifestyle has also changed tremendously. The Internet has divided people’s whole time into a great number of fragmented sections. Some people hold a view that they can use fragmented time to learn many things. However, others disagree with them. As far as I am concerned, I support the former.
We waste much time in commuting every day. Using the fragmented time on a subway to read a book, we will save more time to accumulate more knowledge than before. What’s more, it is convenient to read a book on the phone instead of a book. Fragmented learning can not only save time but also increase efficiency.
In conclusion, fragmented time is short but much. So we had better make good use of it to do many meaningful things.

The life of high school is like a short but precious journey full of happiness and sorrow. Here I would like to share some of my suggestions with you.

9.Dear John,
I am pleased to receive your letter seeking after my proposals on how to overcome the awful habit of staying up late. Therefore, I am writing to give you a helping hand. From my point of view, there are two accounts for this. For one thing, a habit is easy to form but hard to get rid of. According to the statistics, it may take a person 21 days to cultivate a habit but 90 days to get over it. For another, since mobile phones have become an indispensable part in our daily life, it is absolutely difficult to resist the tempt of it, especially for us adolescents.
Here are some humble suggestions for your consideration. First and foremost, you are supposed to switch off your phone and keep your phone away from you before going to bed so that it will not attract you attention. Additionally, if I were you, I would work out properly before going to bed to relax yourself both physically and mentally. Last but not least, it is high time you enhanced your awareness of early sleep. As a classic prover goes that early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
Whichever suggestion you will take, please persevere in it. Hopefully, your problem would be solved soon.
Best wishes!
Yours,
Wang Lin
